Book:"Dangled Carat" by Hilary Grossman

I married a commitment-phobic man, so when I heard the premise of Author Hilary Grossman's book, Dangled Carat, I knew that this was a book that I HAD to read.

Many of you know Hilary as the author of the popular blog Feeling Beachie, where her keen sense of observation, as it relates to people and their idiosyncrasies,  is conveyed (often with sarcasm and humor), on a daily basis. For the cat lovers that read both of our blogs, you probably came to know Hilary when she would write about her beloved cat, Alex, (who I was pleased to see was mentioned  a number of times in the book),  and now her current kitty,  precious Lucy. Today I am pleased to introduce you to  Hilary Grossman, AUTHOR (and a brilliant one at that!),  of Dangled Carat, the first of what I am certain will be a succession of successful novels!

From Dangled Carat:Hilary had gotten used to dating the commitment-phobic Marc, thirteen years her senior. They had a great relationship—why rush into things? She saw no need to pressure him for marriage, believing that when the time was right, he would propose. But after they had been together for four years, their friends decided to take matters into their own hands, pushing Marc to propose and making Hilary realize how much she really did want to marry the man that she loved. Unfortunately, Marc still wasn’t ready—and their friends’ meddling in the form of a faux engagement party led to a disastrous New Year’s Eve that brought their relationship to an inevitable turning point. In this relatable, lighthearted, and playful memoir, Hilary reminisces about her life before Marc—from the insecure and awkward teenage years she spent in a back brace and dealing with the loss of her father, to her early relationships and, finally, to the day she met Marc and realized that she really wanted to see him again...  Hilary shares the details of their relationship and how Marc’s inability to commit led her to find an inner strength and confidence she didn’t know she possessed.

How I wish I had this book when I met my now husband! Hilary was spot on in her often hilarious, and sometimes heartbreaking, depiction of how a woman feels when dating (and WAITING!) for a commitment-phobic man to "see the light." For women who have dated and lost a commitment-phobic man, to those like myself who married one, you will commiserate with the pain, joy, frustration and wisdom that Hilary displayed throughout her relationship with Marc.

One of many things that I found to be fabulous about Dangled Carat, was even knowing Hilary, as I do through blogging,  and KNOWING the final outcome, I found myself gasping at parts, saying "Ohhhh noooo" and cheering her on,  (and yelling at Marc!), through every page. I found myself  FORGETTING that I know her!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the title again. It didn't click with me until I read the book, the title Dangled Carat is brilliant!

How many of you are familiar with the Carrot and Stick Approach?  The Carrot and Stick Approach : "is an idiom that refers to a policy of offering a combination of rewards and punishment to induce behavior. It is named in reference to a cart driver dangling a carrot in front of a mule and holding a stick behind it. The mule would move towards the carrot because it wants the reward of food, while also moving away from the stick behind it, since it does not want the punishment of pain, thus drawing the cart."

I am by no means comparing Hilary to a MULE, but the clear message is that through Marc's obvious signals, gestures and  behavior, he DID love Hilary, but enough to marry her?

Marc showed Hilary enough love and affection to make her remain in a relationship with him, but the obvious reward, marriage, remained out of reach, just like the elusive carrot of the mule. Hilary was in the "driver's seat" in the relationship, but often didn't realize that. Controlling a successful career was easy for her. Hilary endured  heartbreaking traumas in her life that would have broken one with less internal strength, but she emerged victorious. Those battles in hindsight were EASY compared to what she was experiencing with Marc. While  she wanted to remain in the relationship, and in her heart KNEW she would be married to Marc, she also considered moving away from it, wanting to escape the pain that she often felt would happen if she stayed, much like the mule pulling the cart.

In the Jewish religion there is a word and the word is Beshert which means  "inevitable" or "preordained." It can apply to any happening which appears to bear the fingerprints of divine providence"

From Hilary and Marc's first meeting it was evident that this relationship was Beshert, it just took patience, intellect, emotional fortitude, listening to one's gut and the intervention of a VILLAGE! (Marc's friends/family) to have this 40-something commitment-phobe see the light!

  Dangled Carat   is a GEM!!!

In Full Disclosure: I received no compensation for this review, over a year ago I was speaking with Hilary on the phone and learned of her plans to write "A" book, (not knowing it would be this one!) I told her that when she did, I wanted to be SURE to be included as one of the reviewers. That is why I broke away from A HUGE RULE when reviewing Dangled Carat:: I only review books featuring cats, (well Alex IS in the book a teeny-tiny bit!)

Book Review:Stanley & Katrina, The Perpetual Papers of the Pack of Pets

In keeping with our "Cats Rule, Dogs Drool" theme from our blog post yesterdayCody and I are proud to present to you the brilliantly witty book: Stanley & Katrina, The Perpetual Papers of the Pack of Pets which was cleverly pawed penned by the "stars" of this quick and entertaining read Stanley & Katrina themselves!

Who are Stanley & Katrina?

"Katrina is an eight -year-old grey tabby cat who loves her toy mouse. Stanley is a three-year-old black Labrador/Rottweiler mix who does his best to ignore Katrina. Morty, a bunny, assists in narration of their story."

Though they reside in the same house, Stanley and Katrina's preferred method of communicating is through letters which are initiated by Katrina, who prefers to be addressed by her OFFICIAL name: Katrina Von Cat the Master of Wisdom and Knowledge,   Get the picture? Poor Stanley doesn't stand a chance! Katrina is also "a proper member of the Wise Cat Council." Just wait until you read the book to see who the other members of the council are!

This book features letters that deal with topics that are not only the  most pressing topics  in both the lives of Stanley & Katrina, but in the lives of cats and dogs in general!

There are letters pertaining to:

  • The Vacuum
  • The Vet-Oh no!
  • The Cat Council-where you will meet the council "members"
  • New Food
  • The Christmas Tree Goes Up
  • Training-where Katrina discusses with Stanley that she doesn't understand why HE gets trained and she doesn't! Katrina wants to be trained because it means FREE TREATS!!  Katrina was delighted to learn that she was in fact going to be trained, and was thrilled when her name was called to begin, and she got a treat simply for walking into the kitchen! That's a CAT for ya! That's how they roll! Reap the rewards with minimal effort! Just be "cool" and the world is your oyster!

If you are looking for a fast read that showcases the relationship between cats and dogs in a witty and sarcastic manner, then this is the book for you! It would make a great gift for the cat lover(s) oh and dog lovers too,  that are in your life!

Want more? Check out the trailer!

The Aries Cat with a Libra Mom

FROM CAT CHAT WITH CAREN AND CODY: I have always enjoyed Astrology from the standpoint of reading about the characteristics of signs and seeing if they pertain to me or people in my life. I have TONS of books that I have enjoyed reading that also shed light on this issue.

I was tickled when I was contacted by my new friend Sunny, asking if I would like a compatibility guest post done where she would discuss my Sun Sign and Cody's. (I am born on the cusp of Libra and Scorpio so for me I would do both signs, but Sunny focused on the Libra aspect which is fine with me!)

Enjoy the guest post!

Sometimes, you just know in your heart when you’ve met your purr-fect pal. There’s that certain little pull at the heart that a pet parent feels when they meet their kitty companion that they will love forever -- through clawed draperies or blissful afternoons curled up on the couch together “making muffins.”
Whether you call it intuition, fate, or kitty kismet, the stars often align for an animal and their human to find one another. While a fluffy tail or calico pattern may scream “take me home!” to some, the intangible qualities of compatibility can also be found in the astrological signs of pet parents and their beloved fur kids.

Cody and I on his adoption Day!
July 28, 2007

Let’s take a look at the zodialogical compatibility between Caren and her cat Cody. We’ll offer an overview of Caren and Cody’s sun signs and the role their astrological signs play in their relationship with one another.

Libra: Fair, Balanced, and Charming to a Fault!
Caren’s birthday falls on October 20th, making her a Libra. Those born under the sign of  “the scales” have an innate sense of justice and fair-minded nature -- always willing to play the role of peacemaker and diplomat in any situation. Their natural charm and gift of gab allows them to finesse their way through a variety of situations and crack even the toughest nut and coax them towards seeing the bigger picture. At their core, Libras are people-pleasers and dislike stepping on anyone’s toes -- which, as endearing as this trait may be, can also be their greatest weakness. Libra can come across as wishy-washy sometimes, but others should never mistake this sign’s kindness for weakness.

Aries: A Pioneering Spirit
Born on April 1 (April Fools!), Cody is an Aries. Represented by the astrological sign of the ram, Aries folks are full of energy and eager to pioneer new and exciting things. Whether it’s being the first to climb to the top of the bookshelf or to tear into the community food dish, Aries is always at the front, leading the charge. Aries is ruled by the planet Mars, which accounts for much of this natural-born drive.  Like Libra, Aries has a talent for attracting people to them. They’re also strong-willed and intelligent. (Ironically, many of these Aries traits apply to cats, in general!)

One of Aries’ problem areas is that he is stubborn -- which can be a bit of an understatement when it comes to this sign. Aries has strong convictions and often holds their ground, even if they know they’re wrong. With gentle coaxing, however, Aries does eventually come around and their dynamic nature lends some more

LIbra and Aries Compatibility
On the cosmic astrological wheel, Libra and Aries sit on opposite sides and appear to be polar opposites. However, the term “opposites attract” is highly applicable to this zodiac partnership. Aries and Libra are both incredibly charismatic individuals, however, they take a different approach to how they deal with people. When these two signs get together, Aries has a positive influence on Libra in that they push them to their limits -- in a good way -- and shake them out of a state of laid-back complacency. Libra’s gentle, diplomatic ways persuade Aries to see things from a new angle and push aside some of their selfishness. Aries truly balances Libra out!

If you’re interested in having your own pet zodiac compatibility match up done, feel free to reach out to Psychic Source for more information. Thanks, Caren, for letting us do this reading!

Kittyo Will Revolutionize How Busy Cat Parents Interact with Cats While Away from Home

The lives of cat parents who miss interacting with their cat(s) while away from home will forever be changed in 2014!!

Kittyo announced its plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund its high-tech, chic cat product by the same name in early 2014.  Kittyo will allow the more than 36.1 million U.S. cat parents, and even those around the world, to connect and interact with their furry companions while they’re away from home, no matter the distance.

Lee Miller, Kittyo inventor, said he came up with the concept while pet sitting a friend’s cat while she was away.

“It just hit me; there’s got to be a way to allow cat parents to interact with their cats while they’re at work or on the road traveling,” he said.  “Cats are members of the family, so it’s hard for cat parents to simply say goodbye for long periods of time, especially for the 55% of Americans who have more than one cat.”

Kittyo, although technologically advanced, can be easily operated by apps on any iOS - or Android-enabled smartphone.  Once the app connects with Kittyo, cat parents can:

·         Attract the cat to Kittyo through sound or direct communication
·         View their cat via the embedded webcam
·         Record videos and take photos of the cat while at play
·         Enable the interactive laser pointer to add fun and exercise to the cat’s day
·         Dispense treats

Kittyo will feature a design that complements any home’s interior due to Miller’s partnership with style and design innovators Ion Product Development.

And with great design and innovation comes great interest. Miller said he anticipates a large demand for this first-of-its-kind product, which is currently in pre-release development.  Currently, cat parents can sign up at Kittyo.com to be updated about how to purchase Kittyo at an introductory discounted price.

About Kittyo
Kittyo was invented by Lee Miller in 2013 after he came to the realization that there needs to be a way to connect cats and their parents while they’re away from home.  Pairing high-tech features and stylish design, Kittyo will provide cat parents a fully interactive way to be a part of their cats’ lives, no matter the distance, through iOS and Android smartphone apps.  A Kickstarter campaign will commence in early 2014 to bring Kittyo to market, and cat parents can sign up at Kittyo.com to be updated about how to purchase Kittyo at an introductory discounted price.

Kittyo is currently on Facebook and Twitter.

In full disclosure: I was not compensated for sharing this information. I was contacted, asking if I would share this information with my readers and because I loved the concept and in lieu of it being a Kickstarter campaign  I agreed to do so.

Book:Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big? A Diet Book for Cats by Dena Harris

I knew I was in for a treat when I was contacted by a representative from Ten Speed Press asking if I would be interested in reviewing Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big? A Diet Book for Cats by CWA Member and Author, Dena Harris.

I was honored to have been given the opportunity of reviewing another book of Dena's back in 2010: Who Moved My Mouse? A Self-Help Book for Cats (Who Don't Need Any Help)    Call me biased, but being a fan of Dena's sarcastic wit and spot-on ability of telling us what cats would REALLY say,if given the ability to speak human "language",  I KNEW  that Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big?, an illustrated  diet book for cats,(the illustrations were done by Ann Boyajian of the blog Cattywampus,  she also did the illustrations for Careers for Your Cat), was going to be another winner. I wasn't wrong.

"In less time than it takes to cough up a hairball, you too can be fit, feline and fabulous!
Cat-tharsis has never been this fun!"

What did Cody think when HE read it?

Well, you will have to hear it from his own mouth!

Hi all it's Cody! I tried, I really did! Mom was supposed to review this book a month or so ago but I hid it, so well that she couldn't find it! Mom was supposed to review it yesterday, but once again, I foiled her! Until TODAY. when Mom found, Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big? under the kitchen table, and I knew I was finished, done, kaput!

Yes that is ME on the scale!
I just used the quote from the book
with my photo

You see, for some time now Mom has been working hard at trying to keep me at a "normal" weight and basically, much to my dismay, she has succeeded. With the New Year approaching, Mom and legions of others will be making resolutions, or as we prefer to call them, intentions for the New Year, I know Mom's weight-loss challenge is high on the list, and NOW thanks to a certain Ms.Dena Harris, MINE WILL BE TOO!

Mom made me take the quiz in Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big? to find out just what type of an eating purrsonality  I have. Once I took the quiz, (and kitties it will be the same for YOU so watch out!), Dena Harris suggested different weight loss programs, that are listed in the book, based on my own purrsonality.

My results?
I had 6 A's and 7 C's which makes me a COMATOSE CAT ("Diet, schmiet!")who leans more towards being an ADD CAT (with my higher score being in the 7s)

The basic trait as stated in Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big? of the ADD CAT is my weight goes up and down, up and down, (which happens to be true!)  "I'm motivated to lose the weight until hunger kicks in." My supposed and true goal in life is to be the "last cat standing at the food dish."  The suggested Diet Plans for an ADD CAT are:

  • Paleo Diet
  • The Zone
  • Raw Food Diet and The Living Food Movement

To learn about these diet plans, other plans, and to find out what type of program would work best for YOU,  you will have to READ THE BOOK!

Mom thinks it is funny, but we all no she has NO sense of humor, that Dena Harris takes REAL Diets, Diet Groups such as Mom's personal nemesis, Weight Watchers, Mom has gained back ALL of the 44 lbs she lost on the program, but I digress....who Ms.Harris calls "Weight Stalkers", and Jenny Craig, aka Catty Craig) and describes their basic philosophies in a way that will have you rolling on your back exposing your ample bellies in fits of meows, which we all know is laughter!

Mom doesn't realize it, but many of the diet "tips" that Ms.Harris lists in the book, actually all of them if you remove the hilarious "catspeak", can be applied to HUMANS!

"with laugh-out-loud insights into daily feline life, cat lovers will feel better about their own dieting and fitness struggles when compared to those of obese cats unable to avoid inhaling that can of tuna."

I suggest my Mom stop laughing and utilize these suggestions/tips/insights for herself!!

Kitties, there are exercise tips, a Bonus Section which includes:

  • 21 Easy Steps to put your cat on a diet! (you didn't hear this from me! Mom made me tell you!)
  • Superfuds
  • Top Ten Tips for Continued Weight Loss Success
  • Ask Flabby Tabby

"Have a question about diet, nutrition, or how to get your favorite jingle ball out from underneath the fridge? Renowned feline health expert and life couch coach Flabby Tabby is here to answer your questions."

So my fellow felines , what do ya think? Have I piqued your interest? Do you think it is time you read this book before your HUMAN does? Why OF COURSE you think so! This book would make the PURRFECT HOLIDAY GIFT for the fatty feline in your life!!

You are in luck!

The publisher has agreed to have a GIVE-AWAY (18 and over only please), where ONE PURRSON who resides in the U.S. (once again my apologies to my international readers), will win a copy of Does This Collar Make My Butt Look Big? A Diet Book for Cats by Dena Harris, (a $12.99 value).

MANDATORY:leave me a comment telling me the name of the cat(s) who will most benefit from reading it!

THE GIVE-AWAY IS OPEN NOW AND WILL END ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12TH AT 5PM EST, the WINNER as chosen by www.random.org will be announced on LUCKY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13th! GOOD LUCK!
