Cat Book: Celebrating the FIRST-EVER National Tabby Day with a Give-Away of The Extraordinary Life of Buffy the Cat by Sandy Robins and Paul Smulson

It is an honor to be among a number of bloggers who were contacted to help spread the word about the "FIRST-EVER" National Tabby Day (which will take place on April 30th), and to help share the news about an adorable and hilarious new book The Extraordinary Life of Buffy the Cat with brilliant photos  by Dr.Paul Smulson and witty captions by Author Sandy Robins  that will have you rolling on the floor like a cat with catnip!!! It is just too witty and adorable!

I have had the pleasure of knowing Sandy Robins for a number of years now, after having met at  a host of blogging conferences/events. She is a complete and total delight in person! Sandy Robins is an award-winning multimedia pet lifestyle expert, author and radio, TV and pet industry personality. She is also Paul Smulson’s BFF (which also stands for Buffy Fan Forever)

Dr. Paul Smulson
has practiced oral surgery for 35 years. He worked as a photojournalist for the Chicago Daily Defender during the Michael Jordan era and has had photographs appear in Sport Magazine, the Chicago Sun-Times and Fox Sports’ Beyond the Glory. He photographed zoo animals for years before focusing on Buffy.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:Born into the body of an orange tabby, Buffy has experienced life in a way most humans never do. Making the Most of All Nine Lives documents Buffy as he trades hairballs for golf balls, scratching posts for the Evening Post and meowing a yawn for mowing the lawn. With this great new collection of thoughts and photos Buffy has transcended from litter box to literature. No cat owner’s library is complete without this delightful yarn.

DID YOU KNOW?
that the term "tabbies" refers to a coat pattern and is NOT a cat breed? Talk about embarrassing! I have been a "Tabby Mom" since late 1989 and I did NOT know this until recently! "A tabby is any domestic cat that has a coat featuring distinctive stripes, dots, lines or swirling patterns, usually together with a mark resembling an 'M' on its forehead." No wonder when I would try to research the "breed" Tabby" NOTHING would come up! That is beyond EMBARRASSING!

My Angel Bobo

Cody has the distinctive "M" on his forehead and some classic Tabby stripes and dots on his neck, legs and belly, but isn't nearly as distinctively  a "Tabby" as my Angel Bobo was, as seen in the photo above.

Bobo was with me for 18 years and was the first Tabby cat to steal my heart! He was the original inspiration for this blog and it is ultimately dedicated to Bobo and Cody.

The Extraordinary Life of Buffy the Cat stars one of the most handsome orange tabby cats you will ever meet! (Ok, we bloggers know a number of handsome orange tabbies, but Buffy is right up there with them!) The book is 128 pages packed with the most darling photos you will ever see, it is small, (5x6), which makes it the perfect size to carry with you!

Neither Bobo nor Cody would ever allow me to take the creative and UNPHOTO-SHOPPED (is that a word?) photos that you will see in this darling book! That is just part of what makes Buffy so extraordinary, he is truly a "one-in-a-million cat!"

"It may be Thanksgiving, but this looks too good to share"Photo Courtesy of Triumph Books

Sandy Robins creatively and often hilariously puts Buffy's "thoughts behind his actions into words so that cat lovers everywhere can live vicariously, enjoying this amazing feline's people skills and escapades."

"Let's solo the piano now.
But I'm going to give the
pedals a skip."

Paul Smulson had "spent most of my life feeling ambivalent toward cats", until his neighbor's cat had kittens and he and his wife adopted two of them. He soon discovered that "there was a besotted cat person hidden inside of me."

One day, he put headphones on Buffy and reached for his camera. To his amazement, Buffy sat for five minutes holding different poses while he snapped away. He couldn't decide who was having more fun during these photo sessions, Buffy or himself.
"YES! Feline groovy..."Photo Courtesy of Triumph Books

FROM PAUL SMULSON: From my own personal transformation into a cat lover, I learned that I was not unique. Many people don't realize they are cat lovers until they get an opportunity to interact with a cat. My hope is that by enjoying this book, more people will give cats a chance so that ultimately more deserving felines find love and forever homes.

In Our Hearts and Our Prayers

There has been so much sadness in the blogosphere the past few months.  Too many doggies and kitties have been ill and many have gone to "The Bridge." (We can't list them all because we are certain we would accidentally forget some and we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.).There has been sadness with human health conditions as well.  We want to take a moment and tell all of our friends that we wish we could make the pain go away. We wish we could bring the furbabies back who have left us, and we wish we could heal those who are hurting, but we can't.

What we CAN do is tell you that we love you, that we  are thinking of you and keeping you all in our prayers.

Spring has SPRUNG and it's "PURRFECT" with Purrfectplay Spring Gift Baskets! Give-Away!

Hi my furiends! It's Cody and today is the most "PURRFECT" day ever! Why? Well, one reason is that SPRING has FINALLY "sprung" here in Michigan!!! We have been having lovely temperatures and sun-shiny days, and YOUR day is about to become even MORE "sun-shiny!!" Wanna know why? OF COURSE YOU DO!!!  Because today I get to tell you about the purrfectly PAWESOME and NEW Spring Gift Baskets for Cats that are BRAND SPANKING NEW from Purrfectplay!!!!

Now, I know many of you are familiar with how completely incredible the items at Purrfectplay are, (heck, I  learned about them from many of YOU!). If you do know about them, today I am showing you MORE toys that you MUST get for your sun-puddle-toy-playin'-fun!!  For those of you who who aren't familiar with Purrfectplay, oh are you in for a TREAT!!

The day my Spring Gift Basket arrived, the anticipation of what would be inside of the box was killing me!
I closed my eyes and tried to imagine what catabulous delights awaited me inside of that HUGE box!!

The toy I am sniffing in this shot is the Silly Sea Cucumber. All of the items in the baskets (they are available in small and large), are made with certified organic materials and are dye free!! Any color that is seen occurs naturally in the fiber.

Cotton Chase Balls Close-Up

Not only was I THRILLED with my Spring Gift Basket, but Mom was just shrieking and giggling like a hyena!!!

First, Mom was smitten with the care and attention that was given to how the Spring Gift Basket was WRAPPED! (Mom is rather strange like that). Mom feels that how a company presents items that they send says a lot about them. To say that Mom is in love with Purrfectplay is an understatement. She is insanely crazy about their products, their philosophy, the quality of their products, EVERYTHING!

About Purrfectplay:

We are a simple business. We design our pet toys to be durable and fun, using only organic natural fibers to produce them. If Mother Nature didn't make it, we don't use it.

Our products are crafted in our workshop or in our local community member's homes. Each pet toy and gift is individually produced-we are not trying to sell "pallets" of goods. We are working to understand what our customers want on a one to one basis. Each of our customers and their pets is important and valuable to us.

Purrfectplay is simply dedicated to producing the best cat and dog toys possible while keeping you informed about the role synthetics and chemicals play in undermining your pets' health and the welfare of our planet. We are not flashy and you will probably never see our pet products on the shelves of your local mega store.

The Purrfectplay toys are:

  • Award winning durable, safe, fun pet toys
  • Made from 100% Natural and Organic Materials
  • Synthetic and plastic free
  • Manufactured in the USA/Proud to Produce in Indiana
  • 5% of each sale is dedicated to rescues/shelters

Hemp Catnip Carrot
There was one pawticular  item in my basket that my Mom found to be incredibly charming and clever they are the:

Wooly Dust Bunnies

My Mom was just roaring with laughter at those! She said that because most of the toys that kitties play with end up under refrigerators, beds and couches and start to resemble "Dust Bunnies", heck, why not have some toys that are ALREADY Dust Bunnies!?

Kitties These Baskets Aren't Just For You:

All of the toys are carefully packaged in a darling pot (Mom thinks that she might try and plant some catnip in mine!!!) and it has an adorable planter stick (what in the world are those called?) That says: "there's nobunny like you" (You can see that in the first photo on this blog post).

Kitties!!! Mother's Day is right around the corner!!!! Show the female humans in your life some appreciation on Mother's Day, birthdays, or ANY DAY!! Why? Because Purrfectplay has the PURRFECT gifts for HUMANS TOO!!!  Pet lovers will LOVE their:

There is something for EVERYONE!!!

Mom had wanted to get a video of me playing with my toys, but couldn't because I kept being photo-bombed by one JEALOUS Sheltie!!

I was trying to play with my Silly Sea Cucumber and he wouldn't leave me alone!!

I think Mom is going to have to get Dakota some Purrfectplay toys of his own so he can let me play in peace!!  I know many of you kitties live with a woofie as I do, tell your human to check out all of the Organic Dog Toys and other items that Purrfectplay has as well!!!

Then, maybe we will FINALLY be able to play in peace!!

Last, but far from least, there is something (or someBODY) that makes Purrfectplay extra special and that is Pam Wheelock,
"Head Honcho, Cat Soother, and Dog Walker."

Mom just fell in love with her while communicating  before and after receiving my toys. Mom says that she is such a joy that SHE is like a "breath of Spring" herself!!!

Mom says that she and I are now BOTH spoiled. We have reviewed more cat toys through the years than we could shake 500 paws at (if we HAD 500 paws), and the toys from Purrfectplay are HEADS and TAILS above ANY that we have reviewed thus far. Yep, I said that....I'm a tell-it-like-it-is kinda kitty!  Who could NOT love a company that from their beginning "has been a "green" company."  With Earth Day approaching this week, what better way to celebrate  Mother Earth  than by pawchasing some superbly made toys from a COMPANY WHO CARES ABOUT THE EARTH?

If all of the above doesn't make YOU want these toys and want them NOW, then kitties, you have been sniffing TOO MUCH NIP!!

You can find Purrfectplay on:

Cat News:Jackson Galaxy Foundation Initiative for Shelter Cats, “Cat Pawsitive” launches April 19

“Cat Pawsitive” teaches positive reinforcement to improve adoptability

The Jackson Galaxy Foundation will partner with shelters across the U.S. to implement Cat Pawsitive, an initiative that introduces positive-reinforcement training to shelters, beginning April 19.

Developed by Jackson Galaxy and a team of animal behavior experts, Cat Pawsitive is a positive reinforcement training program aimed at:

·         enriching day-to-day life for cats in shelters
·         building social skills
·         promoting the human-cat bond
·         improving “adoptability”

Three feline behavior experts hand-picked by the Foundation will lead the pilot program in nine shelters across the country, ranging from small, limited-admission private shelters to large, open-admission municipal facilities. The shelters will each participate in three webinars with the trainers and will have direct access to the team for consultations throughout the three-month program.

“Our goal with Cat Pawsitive isn’t just to keep cats in the shelter behaviorally and physically active—we’re also working to empower staff and volunteers to continue using positive reinforcement methods when the program concludes,” says Jackson Galaxy, star of My Cat from Hell on Animal Planet and Founder of his namesake organization. “This program will raise the public profile of cats, demonstrate their trainability and will serve as a model for organizations helping animals everywhere.”

Cats who are exposed to reward-based training methods gain confidence and experience reduced stress through clicker training sessions; soon they are building connections with staff, volunteers and potential adopters. Cat Pawsitive can help a shy cat learn to feel comfortable coming up to the front of her cage to meet an adopter, a feisty cat learn to play nice, and an outgoing kitty learn to give an endearing "high five" to his visitors to seal an adoption deal.

“We are thrilled to be working with organizations all over the country to show the world what can be done to step up the game, and improve outcomes for cats in shelters,” says Galaxy.  Cat Pawsitive will run from April 19 through mid-July and will conclude with an analysis of the program’s impact.

PARTICIPATING SHELTERS:

  • Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League (Washington, D.C.)
  • Animal Care Centers of NYC ( New York City)
  • Maryland SPCA ( Baltimore)
  • Furkids ( Atlanta, Georgia)
  • Cat Adoption Team ( Sherwood, Oregon)
  • Anti-Cruelty Society (Chicago)
  • Providence Animal Rescue League ( Rhode Island)
  • Tabby Town ( Blasdell NY)
  • SPCA of Texas ( Dallas)

ABOUT THE JACKSON GALAXY FOUNDATION

JGF is led by the vision of Jackson Galaxy, who through his years in animal welfare, as an animal advocate, his work as a behaviorist and host of his globally popular TV show, ”My Cat from Hell,” has developed an unwavering commitment to help animals at risk and the people who work tirelessly to get them homes.

The Jackson Galaxy Foundation focuses on programs that drive innovation; promotes improved shelter design and construction; and provides “Elevation through Education”—increased knowledge that inspires and empowers staff, volunteers, rescuers and adopters to continually raise the bar for animals at risk.

#NutrishPets "Making A Difference In The Lives of Shelter Pets" #sponsored

Rachael Ray Nutrish has sponsored this post, but all opinions are my own.

Hi every kitty, humans, woofies and whoever you are that stopped by today! It's Cody, and today, because of some important things I have to say in honor of the month of April being National Volunteer Month, I shoved, asked Mom to leave the keyboard so that I may take over. Please move closer kitties so I can meow without yowling!

As many of you know, National Pet Day was the other day. In my house and in yours, that event takes place 365 days a year, but not all animals are as lucky as you and I.

I was sad when I was thinking about all of the "forgotten pets." You know the ones I am talking about, "the ones who might not have someone who loves them as much as you love your pet."  These pets are often left to fend for themselves on the street, or they spend much of their time in Shelters waiting for a special human to come and take them to their furever home.

When I go to bed at night I often pray that they will find a good home like I did!

I was one of the lucky ones. I was rescued at a young age, (if memory serves me correctly, I think I barely had my eyes open!) My Foster Mom rescued me and my litter mates and moved us in with her. She called me "Prince", (Yep! I am the cat "formerly known as Prince!!")

For a few weeks my Foster Mom schlepped me to various adoption drives hoping to find me a home.  I bet you didn't know that the first time my Mom saw me she didn't adopt me? Nope. My Grandpa Bobo had just gone to the Bridge and she wasn't ready. Then, two weeks later, I was back at the same store that had the adoption drive the first time she saw me. Do you believe that Mom actually was interested in my litter mates and NOT ME!? Thankfully neither of them wanted anything to do with her, so she said "let me see that gray one who is jumping around in the back." The rest is history!!!

An "oldie" but "goodie" for #tbt

When Mom adopted me, my Foster Mom told Mom that I had been her favorite. Mom often says all of these years later, that my Foster Mom was more than likely the key component as to why I am the cuddly and loving kitty that I am today, and that I have always been. My Mom and I thank my Foster Mom EVERY year by sending her birthday cards on Facebook!

My Foster Mom was a volunteer, just as many of you humans who are reading this today are, and without YOU, to take care of the kitties and woofies,  and show them love and how to love, kitties like myself  might never have been adopted! You can't see me but my tail is raised in salute!!!

Being a Foster Mom (or Dad), is just one of many, many ways that humans volunteer to help Shelters.  If you are a long time reader of my blog, you will remember that once Mom went to an adoption drive and fell in love with a kitty (perish the thought!), that she couldn't bring home, so she paid the adoption fee for another family so that they could adopt him! He is with them to this day! That made her feel real good!!  It also made the family AND the kitty feel good! It made me proud that my Mom did that.

I am also proud to represent Rachael Ray Nutrish, not just because I love her food, but  because rescue is something that Rachael Ray holds close to her heart. She doesn't just "talk the talk", she "walks the walk!!"

What is Rachael's Rescue®?

Rachael's Rescue was created for all of the forgotten pets — the ones that might not have someone who loves them as much as you love your pet.

Rachael’s personal proceeds go to Rachael’s Rescue®, which was created to help animals in need. To date, she has donated over $10MM. This money has gone toward food, medical supplies and treatments for these unfortunate animals. All of the Rachael Ray Nutrish products are available where you shop for your family’s groceries, making specialty recipes accessible and convenient for every pet parent.

I would say THAT is pretty darned special!!

How Can You Help The Shelters
During National Volunteer Month and EVERY DAY?

  • you could volunteer to play with cats and dogs
  • you could walk dogs
  • clean cages
  • make a monetary donation
  • offer to help answer their busy phones
  • share adoptable pets on social media
  • donate items such as newspapers, towels, cleaning supplies
  • Buy Rachael Ray Nutrish !!
  • do something to thank the Volunteers!! (Everyone LOVES FOOD!!)

Speaking of food, A CERTAIN SOMEONE
NEEDS TO FILL MY BOWL WITH NUTRISH, AND FAST!!!!

So, tell me, what have you done,
or what do you currently do to help the lives of Shelter pets?

Are you a Volunteer?

I'm a nosy kitty!

Leave a comment below and tell me!

 I would LOVE to know!!!

If you can adopt a shelter pet please do,
your lives will BOTH be changed, for the better!!!
