Cat Book: Purrseverance (Inspiring Stories of Cat Resilience and Hope) Compiled by Sierra M. Koester

Since my beloved Cody passed on June 30th, 2020 as many of you know, my time blogging has been greatly limited. When Cody left, any desire to blog that I had left (to be frank, it was waning before he passed and his passing, as well as precious Dakota's nine days later, pretty much sealed the deal).

Eventually I returned, albeit sporadically. I also vowed to no longer do ANY book reviews. Why? Because many of them were just too painful for me to read. (Being candid, they STILL are.)

Back in April or May I was contacted by Sierra Koester, the writer who compiled the above book "Purrseverance" (Inspiring Stories of Cat Resilience and Hope). For those of you who may not be familiar with Sierra, she is "an award-winning freelance writer and professional blogger. Sierra is a Professional Member of the Cat Writer's Association and the Content Manager at The Cat Blogosphere, a place for all pets and pet bloggers. She also writes Fur Everywhere, an educational and entertaining blog about cats."

I'm not going to lie. I sat on this book for the LONGEST time because while it is now 4 years since Cody is gone, the pain is still raw. After enough guilt passed for not opening the book, I decided to finally read it.

I am glad that I did.

It was Sierra's own cat Jewel that was the inspiration behind this compilation. Jewel came to live with Sierra at the ripe old age of 14 after having lived a challenging life. Sierra penned, "it wasn't until I met Jewel that I understood just how remarkably resilient our feline friends can be. Jewel's persistence and resiliency served as the inspiration for this anthology that features other cats who have overcome life's struggles".

A few of my favorite stories in this book are:

My Name is Not Scooter-written by Lorianne Miller about her tripod kitty Evan. Lorianne writes the blog fourleggedfurballs.blogspot.com

Lazarus Cat-written by Sierra M. Koester about  her precious cat Lita

Wren: "A Caged Kitty Can't Purr" written by Julia Williams. This one resonated with me because when I first adopted Cody, he didn't have the fur color that I preferred. I also remember following Julia on social media when she first adopted Wren and was trying to come up with a name for her.

Brian is Home-written by Terry Frum (who in the Cat Blogosphere is so well known he technically needs no introduction.) Terry doesn't just "talk the talk" he "walks the walk", rescuing a multitude of cats and tending to ferals for YEARS. Terry's beloved Brian, an endearing, wise, gentle and loving tabby boy won my heart many years ago when I first began blogging. Terry and his wife are two of the most dedicated pet parents I've ever known. Not just for their own pets, but Terry has been there for myself and countless others when we just needed an ear to offer support or anything else they may need.  Brian, had many of the same qualities as Terry. He believed "if you're kind, then everyone gets along and we can overcome adversity together." You can find Terry's blog Brian's Home at brianshomeblog.com and you can also find Terry on the Cat Blogopshere: blog.catblogosphere.com.

Carmine Fulfills His Purpose-written by Sierra M. Koester about her beloved kitty Carmine.

AND MANY, MANY MORE!

It is Sierra's hope that the stories in this book inspire you the way they inspired her (AND ME!!!). Sierra reminds us that "sometimes even seemingly hopeless situations can turn around. Our feline friends have so much to wisdom to offer. The next time you are facing a difficult challenge, she hopes you'll choose to follow these cats' example to "NEVER GIVE UP!"

In Full Disclosure: I received no compensation for this book feature. I received a copy of Purrseverance in exchange for my featuring it on my blog.

Gone Too Soon

When I awoke this morning and visited Facebook, the first thing I saw was that a special person and friend, that was a long time part of the Cat Blogosphere,  one of the first bloggers we met back in 2009, Pattie Kleinke (aka TW or "The Woman", as her kitty CK also known as Cathy Keisha), called her, had passed after a long battle with cancer.

My heart sunk to my stomach. I honestly thought she would win the battle. I prayed she would.

Pattie's blog (or CK's blog, Stunning Keisha, I linked to it in the post below) was one of my favorites. Edgy, funny, often times poignant (especially when Pattie would post "Pop's" 911 post yearly), was loved by many. TW always "told it like it was" through the voice of Stunning Keisha. As my dear friend Layla Morgan Wilde of Cat Wisdom 101  said today "it's the end of the cat blogging era."

In honor of  TW's memory......I wanted to share  a post that I did on December 26th 2019. I wanted to share a happy memory of TW......it's heart breaking enough that she is gone.....but I think she would want to be honored with a smile and a few laughs. The post mostly mentions CK, but since CK shared the same snarky (as well as sensitive) personality as TW, it's purrfectly appropriate.  Enjoy!

Hi my furiends!! It's Cody pawing out the blog today! Well the long wait is OVER!!!! Today is the day that I am going to reveal the most pawesome gifts that I received from the incredibly STUNNING (and brilliant and kind), Cathy Keisha and TW (who we call "Mom").

Mom, Dakota and I opened our gifts on Christmas (oh yes we did!) because I thought it was appropriate to blog about it on Thursday, which happens to be Boxing Day and National Thank You Note Day! (Technically a hand-written note should be written, but we think a blog post is equally as good in this case!) It's the purrfect day to express our immense gratitude!

Ok my furiends, sit back and relax while I show you all of the goodies!

As you know, when the box arrived we all were so excited!

CK and TW had some lovely cards that I was excited to read:

But I just couldn't control my excitement and I wanted to see what was in that box!

When I peeked inside I found a beautiful kitty bag

Inside that adorable bag were wonderfully wrapped presents!!

Ok so I opened a few before Mom took the photo! Give me a break, I was excited!

CK has known me for my entire ten years of blogging, (she has been blogging ten years too and if you aren't familiar with her blog it is named after HER! It is Stunning Keisha and you MUST visit!) CK is a kitty with a lot of street smarts and general life smarts. She is insightful and she writes quite well. Her intelligence  just shines through her blog posts and she would never admit it, but she is also a sensitive kitty. Caring too. I knew since CK has known me so long, she would pick out gifts that would make me purr! She most definitely made me purr!

There were some little toys that I could swat around, a few of them were from the fabulous Catlady Box, and one of them had "World's Cutest Kitty" printed on it. Yep, that would be ME!!!

There was also a cool Tipsy Nip Pickle (I had one many years ago but could no longer find it, so I was thrilled to get another one!) but I think my FAVORITE gift of all came from Meowijuana!!! It was their Catnip Spliff with catnip and valerian root and I went NUTS when Mom let me open it!!!

When it comes to Meowijuana I don't mess around, that's for sure!!! Mom said she was so happy because I don't play as much as I used to, and when she opened that toy I played like a kitten! In fact, all of that playing gave me the munchies. Thankfully CK had me covered!!! She had gotten me Party Mix too! (That CK thought of EVERYTHING!! But then again, that's how she rolls!!)

I had so many fun toys and I am so grateful!!

After all of that playing and eating it dawned on me that I hadn't opened EVERYTHING yet! I went back to scope out the box

Sure enough, I had missed two presents! There was one for Mom and one for Dakota too! Wait til you see what Mom got! OMC!!

That is NOT a rug but it is quite large! You know what that is? It's a GORGEOUS  scarf from Cat Lady Box!!!! Mom nearly died! She LOVES IT!! The photos don't do it justice, it's even prettier in pawson!

The colors are just beautiful, it is like artwork on a scarf!!!! Mom is just so excited and practically cried when she opened it. Mom thought it was sooo thoughtful of CK and TW to give her such a beautiful scarf. She is crazy about it!

Speaking of thoughtful, there was even an adorably wrapped present for Dakota!!!

Dakota kept staring at it because he couldn't believe that he was lucky enough to receive a gift!!  Boy oh boy, CK and TW said they had never bought a dog a gift before, but wow did they ever pick a good one!

It's the cutest stuffed Beaver from a place we never knew existed. It is from AKC Select (we know AKC obviously, but we never knew there was a line of toys! Leave it to a smart kitty like CK to figure that one out!) It is so cute and it squeaks!

It is just the cutest!!! Mom tried to get some good pictures but Dakota has a tendency of taking off the second he senses Mom wants to take photos of him.  A super cool thing that happened was a few hours after Mom took photos, Dakota went over to the beaver on his own and started running around the room with it. That made Mom and Dad soooo happy! CK and TW Dakota LOVES IT! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

So there you go my furiends! Mom, Dakota and I cannot thank CK and TW enough for their incredibly thoughtful and generous gifts!!! They are just the best! Taking part in Secret Paws is ALWAYS fun, but it is extra fun when your Secret Paws is a kitty and human that you have been furiends with for 10 years and have admired just as long. CK is one of my first blogging furiends and it just made this extra, extra special. They touched my furry heart and Mom is just over the moon! Dakota too!

Love you CK and TW!!!!!!!! Thanks for making us so happy!!!

OCTOBER 7, 2023

WE MOST CERTAINLY DO LOVE YOU TW AND CK.

TW, YOU WILL BE DEEPLY, DEEPLY MISSED

AND YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

If Only Humans Had Nine Lives

I was in shock when I read on Facebook Friday night that one of our sweetest blogging friends left us much, much too soon. Known to the cat blogging world as "Roby Sweet" or "old SoLT", as SHE liked to call herself which stood for  "She of Little Talent", which couldn't be FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. SHE WAS BEYOND TALENTED!  She was the author of Miss C's cozy mysteries and wrote her blog,  The CuddlywumpsChronicles.  When I saw that Sarah Andrews had passed, at first I had no idea who that was. I only knew her as "Roby Sweet". "Sweet" is purrfect to describe her, to Cody and I and to the entire cat blogging community, she was sweet, funny, kind, oh so intelligent, thoughtful.....and so much more.

and sign her guestbook

I am just heartbroken. I barely have the words to convey how sad this is.

Last year, after having taken a year or so break from participating in Secret Paws, Cody and I had missed participating so much that we decided to return. Ironically, our Secret Paws was Roby and her kitties. I remember being totally over-the-moon with her generosity to Cody as well as her thoughtfulness, (we are Jewish and Roby made sure to include Chanukah wishes in our card, which was so thoughtful.) I think what I would like to do, and please indulge me, is copy/paste some excerpts from that blog post because her gifts were so carefully and thoughtfully selected for Cody, that we will never forget it. I am just posting certain excerpts from it.  Please enjoy.

Everything was so nicely wrapped! I didn't know what to go to first but Mom said it was impawtant to read my card first. She said that is the polite thing to do, that one should ALWAYS read the card first. Mom said how in the world would I know who everything was from if I didn't read the card first? (Mom is actually not that bright cause I could have opened everything and THEN read the card, I still would have known who sent everything...but I digress).
.

Mom got all teary-eyed because the card I received was personal and they also included Chanukah on the card which Mom thought was extremely thoughtful.
If you look closely you can see who my presents were from, can you see? Wait! I will make sure that you can see!!!
Now you can see it for sure!!!! It was from Real Cats Paisley & Webster from The Cuddlywumps Cat Chronicles!!!  I was sooo excited and so happy! I love Paisley & Webster !!

See the red blanket that everything is on? That is a really cozy blanket/mat with a pouch to put catnip in! Mom immediately put it on the armrest of the couch where I like to sit when I watch TV with Mom (UPDATE NOVEMBER 10TH 2018: Cody uses that red mat EVERY SINGLE DAY. It is either on the arm rest or on another chair that he loves)

I want to give a HUGE thank you to Real Cats Paisley and Webster and to their Mom for helping them select these most pawesome prezzies!! Mom and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! You made us both so happy! We love you and we hope the prezzies you get from your Secret Paws are as pawtastic as the ones you got me!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Love, Cody

Roby, (Sarah), we will miss you.........thank you for the many, many kind comments you left on our blog and for your friendship, kindess and the many, many laughs you brought to us. It seems so unfair that you were taken so young. I guess Heaven needed a new Angel..........we sure hope you can see us from Heaven.

If only humans had nine lives........

with much love today and always,
and with broken hearts,
but with hearts that are grateful to have known you,

Caren and Cody

A "Partial" Eclipse of the Heart---Caturday Art

Sooo, while everyone was in the midst of a solar eclipse frenzy on August 22, I never got the special glasses that had to be worn because I  heard we would only experience approximately 80% totality here in Michigan. (Ironically, once you know you CANNOT look up at the sun, all you want to do IS to look up!)

So, here is what it looked like outside our home here in Michigan, (I wasn't smart like some others who photographed their homes INSIDE. Should have done that!)

The top photo on the left is just before it started, the one on the top right was as it was progressing and the bottom one was our final result. Wish I had bought the darn glasses!

But.....Cody thinks that he eclipses any phenomena that happens once in a lifetime!!!

I have to agree!!!

Today we are FINALLY participating in Caturday Art after not participating in AGES!! Head on over to the Caturday Art Blog Hop hosted by GORGEOUS Athena Cat Goddess and her sweet Mum, Marie:

and see some GREAT participants!

International Box Day

From Cat Chat With Caren and Cody: Portions of this post are from June 19, 2015. We figured since we always have some readers who might not have seen something, we would share some of it again. (Cody is now 10, he was 8 yrs old when this post first appeared).

Hi every furry it's Cody!

Today marks only the SECOND time in my almost six years of blogging,  that I am pawticipating in the festivities surrounding a holiday that was created by the pet blogging community, International Box Day. This day was created because to most kitties (and even some woofies), cats and boxes just kind of go together, kinda like catnip and toys, or me and food, capisce?  Take note, I said "MOST" kitties...not EVERY kitty loves boxes....I am one of those kitties.

You see, I am a rather unique kitty in many ways, what most kitties DON'T like, I LOVE, and what most kitties LOVE, I don't like.

Just a few of the things that make me different are :

I am not afraid of the vacuum
I love my vet
I don't mind the car
I willingly take my medicine
I greet strangers in our home, BEFORE my woofie brother, Dakota does
I love to be cuddled
I love to lie on my back
I do NOT lay on laundry AFTER it has been dried.
I do NOT lay on the bed
I could care less about water running from the sink

Normally, I prefer to "think OUTSIDE of the box!" Yes, that's true! I am a kitty that doesn't relish being confined by ANYTHING!

I am eight years young, and this past year was probably the FIRST year that I showed more interest in boxes than any year thus far!

Mom was super excited because that meant that I could now pawticipate in International Box Day,

You know what they say,
"If ya can't beat 'em, join 'em!!!
Happy International Box Day
to all of you NORMAL
kitties and woofies out there!!!

Fun Friday Give-Away! FroliCat® FOX DEN

Hi and happy Friday all!!!

As many of you know if you have followed our blog for a while, I am a pretty big fan of the FroliCat line of cat toys. So much so, that two years ago for Cody's birthday I had a colossal give-away.

Cody's favorites in the FroliCat line are the FroliCat™ BOLT™, the FroliCat™ FLIK™ and the FroliCat™ POUNCE™ by PetSafe® .

When presented with the opportunity to test/review a new toy in the FroliCat line-up, the  FroliCat® FOX DEN, I was looking forward to Cody giving it a "go."

ABOUT  FroliCat® FOX DEN

The FroliCat® Fox Den is an automated, motion-activated cat toy that will encourage your cat to play. Simply insert 3 AA batteries, (not included). Choose which mode to use (you can vary the speed), and place Fox Den on the floor (or if you are daring and want to break your own "house" rules, on a table like we did!!),where the surface is flat.

FEATURES

There is a Fox Tail inside that "hides" and then pops out at random times to entice cats. You can choose from One Time Play mode where the toy will play for 10 minutes then turn off.
Or select Play All Day mode where the toy will play every two hours, three times, for 10 minutes each. (I have never tried this mode, if any of you have, please feel free to leave your thoughts!). In between automatic play sessions, when the toy is idle, the motion sensor on the front of the toy will detect nearby motion (up to within several feet!) and will turn on automatically. If no motion is detected, the toy will rest until the next automatic play session or motion is detected again.

PROS

  • Set up is super easy.
  • Clear instructions are provided.
  • Many cats WILL like this toy.

CONS

IT IS LOUD

I think that is partly why Cody didn't quite know what to make of it. As you can see in the video below, he was intrigued, but somewhat hesitant, I think it is due to the sound.

My suggestion would be that if there is sound involved. Maybe make it a sound that would ATTRACT a cat. Like a chattering type of a sound. If that isn't possible then a button where you could control the volume would be great. The sound irritated me, so I am wondering if Cody found it to be equally irritating.

ARE CATS ATTRACTED TO FOX TAILS?

I know dogs are. But cats? What are your thoughts? When I watched Cody with this toy I was thinking that a fox tail isn't something that I think that cats are inherently attracted to. Yes, they like the swishing movement, etc........but the tail is THICK. Cats tend to like things that are jerky, thinner and are something they feel they could "hunt" and carry away.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think the toy is cute, but Cody was far more attracted to the other FroliCat toys that had a mouse tail and one that had a tiny mouse. That being said, eventually, Cody did begin to warm up to it.

Then, just for fun, I decided to bring it into the living room and see what Dakota's reaction would be. My hope was that he would be attracted to it and that Cody would like it better if Dakota was trying to "catch" it. But...I forgot, he is a DOG, what does he know? Another thought, look at Dakota's tail as he walks away, I think his tail resembles that Fox tail! Maybe that is why Cody wasn't that enthused?

The FroliCat® FOX DEN IS a cute toy. I just think that compared to others in the line it isn't quite as good. Also, my opinion is just that, MY OPINION. All cats are different. Some are attracted to things that others are not. Just because Cody wasn't as enthused as I thought he would be does not mean that your cat(s) will react the same. I am also thinking that a multiple cat household would have a blast with it because they could all hover around it at once.

The concept is super cute but I think the execution could have been improved. The FroliCat® FOX DEN retails for $19.95.

GIVE-AWAY

If you would like the chance to win a FroliCat® FOX DEN of your own, enter on the rafflecopter below. The give-away is open to those 18 and over who reside in either the U.S. or Canada. Good luck!

In full disclosure: All opinions are mine. I was sent a FroliCat® FOX DEN in exchange for my always honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation.

Christmas Eve and Chanukah

For the first time in 42 years the first night of Chanukah and Christmas Eve are falling on the same day!!! That is pretty darned special! For those who celebrate Chanukah, we send wishes for a great "Eight Crazy Nights", for those waiting for Santa, be sure to get to bed early and put those toys away, you don't want him to fall!

Now, we know many of you have seen this fabulous video that was made by the Mom of Peaches & Paprika, but, even if you have, it is worth seeing again, if you haven't seen it, ENJOY!!

We hope to post the email and snail mail cards that we LOVE and THANK YOU for sending, on our blog on Christmas Day or December 26th. I have been having HUGE spam email trouble since Friday (hundreds coming in at a time), so if I can clear that up, hopefully I can post the cards.

We love you and appreciate you all, and however you are celebrating tonight, be safe, have fun and enjoy!!!

Love from Caren and Cody

Book:Brain Games for Cats: by Claire Arrowsmith (Give-Away!)

FROM THE PUBLISHER:There are about 86 million cats in American homes and it is likely that many of their owners do not picture their pet doing leg weaves. But they are mistaken. Cats can do and enjoy tricks, interactive games and playing with their people. Brain Games for Cats shows how.

It's true. Cats love being with humans, and one of the best ways to strengthen that bond is to play together. Not only is playtime fun for the cat, it's a great way to provide mental and physical exercise.
In Brain Games for Cats, each game or trick has been specially photographed in a step-by-step format that provides clear guidance on how it should be approached.

A reward-based teaching method is used to shape behavior -- the mutual trust that this engenders benefits all aspects of the cat's relationship with its owner. The games are appropriate for cats and kittens, helping to keep them fit and stimulated at all ages.

I was excited to receive this book because more often than not I am remiss in doing a ton of interactive play with Cody. I often feel guilty about that. Yes, we do the wand toy thing, but that is about it!

Cody is naturally athletic (even with his jelly belly he has always been an athletic cat). He is also out-going, fearless and curious. There are some brain games where they have you teach the cat to stand on his hind legs to get a treat, etc., Cody does that naturally. I imagine if I had this book when he was much younger I could have turned him into a circus kitty!

"I can't wait to watch her
try and "train" or "teach" me
This is gonna be GOOD!!"
Brain Games for Cats is jam-packed with all sorts of activities. If you live in a cold weather climate as I do, this would be the perfect time of year to try these "games"! My biggest problem is having the time, as well as the patience, but I am sure many of you are much more patient than I am.

Included in Brain Games For Cats:

Introduction -- Understanding your cat: Breed and temperament; Health factors to consider; Which games to play?

Building A Bond -- Games that mentally and physically tone your cat: Sit Up, Stretch for Toy, Stand High, High Five, Paw Hockey etc.

More Complex Games -- Retrieve, Fishing, Hoop Jump, Limbo, Hurdles, Leg Weaves, Obstacle Course, Bubble Chase.

Introductory paragraphs describe the games' benefits; for example, the leg weave may help to prevent a few human-cat feet-and-paw entanglements. Notes indicate whether it is an interactive game, the best location to play, the level of difficulty, and the props required, such as treats, toys or boxes. The steps are explained in clear terms for easy understanding.

My favorite chapters were:

CHAPTER 4-GAMES FOR LESS ACTIVE CATS

CHAPTER 5-GAMES FOR MORE ACTIVE CATS

CHAPTER 8-GAMES FOR EXTROVERTED CATS

CHAPTER 6-GAMES FOR CREATIVE OWNERS

This chapter featured some box games. Feeling motivated I grabbed a couple of boxes that were in the house, cut some holes and did my own variation.

Cody watches the preparation take place
Being the lazy person that I am. After cutting the holes, instead of using a wand toy and making it into a "castle" as the below graphic depicts. I did my own thing.

After cutting holes, I brought treats out, threw them in and let Cody do his thing!

Even Dakota was intrigued!

I think I will end up cutting more holes in the boxes and try the "Cat in the Castle" game, I was just too lazy to do it this time around.

Brain Games for Cats is definitely a book that I will keep and refer to for fun ideas that will challenge Cody and keep his mind and body active. I definitely suggest that you make it a part of your "Cat Library" in YOUR "Castle" as well!!

Don't miss our give-away below!!!

Come Fly With Me To My House Sammy!!!

Hi my furiends, it's Cody! There is a special event going on tomorrow, (hosted by Madi and Easy),  in honor of our dear friend Sammy from One Spoiled Cat.  (This post was written before we heard the shocking news yesterday of Easy going to the bridge. We are devastated, simply devastated. For those of you who follow Dakota, we posted there). Sammy posted today that Easy would have wanted the event to go on as scheduled, so here is the special event that Madi and Easy created. The event is called:

Here is what everyone is supposed to do:

"WE ARE ASKING EVERYBUDDY TO FIND A PLACE IN THEIR CITY, STATE, COUNTRY OR HOME THAT YOU THINK SAMMY WOULD LOVE TO VISIT.
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE SAMMY LOVES TO TRAVEL.
PREPARE A SHORT POST TELLING SAMMY ALL ABOUT THE LOCATION.
THEN LICKETY SPLIT YOU ARE READY AND YOU HAVE A POST READY FOR
FRIDAY DECEMBER 2."

Because we have a sponsored obligation for tomorrow, we are doing our post a day early because we love Sammy and his Mom so much and we do NOT want to miss out!

We have no place exciting to share,  just our backyard, because sometimes "all you are looking for is right in your own back yard!!"

In our case, we think Sammy would enjoy seeing these silly geese that came by the other day! You know what Mom calls them? "BILL COLLECTORS!!" MOL MOL! Because geese have "bills!!" Get it??? MOL!!

I think Sammy would enjoy sitting in my cat tree with me watching these guys out the window.

So what do you think Sammy? I sure wish you could come over and join me!!! Love you pal, always will, Mom does too and we love your sweet Mom as well!!

Thanks to Dory for posting the linky early so we could participate early!!
