FROM CAT AND DOG CHAT WITH CAREN: I was recently contacted by one of the kindest, sweetest authors I have ever had the pleasure of interacting with. Her name is Kat McCarthy, and while I am not doing book reviews at this time, I was so moved by her email and touched by her kind personality that I ALMOST gave in!!!
What I am happy to do is to post her press release. I am happy to still post about books that sound interesting to me (even if I have not read the book). I encourage you to read this press release, this book sounds like a good one! (Oh and I have received no compensation for featuring this book).

The Wild Side of the Wall, immerses readers in the sensory world of Cricket, a young
free-ranging cat who goes searching for the closeness she once shared with her
littermates. Venturing past the last wall in her territory, she discovers
Gentle — a large, friendly dog who smells full of puppies and joy. What begins
as cautious curiosity grows into an exuberant friendship — and finally, a
boisterous family to call her own.
When her chosen family is threatened,
Cricket and Gentle leave every wall behind in a desperate race to protect their
pack.
Early readers are calling The Wild
Side of the Wall a must-read for cat lovers — a deeply immersive novel that
makes them feel as though they are experiencing the world as a cat.
“I kept searching for the novel that
would let me truly experience life as a cat. I never found it. So I wrote it,”
McCarthy says.
McCarthy drew on years of observing cats
and studying feline behavior to keep Cricket authentically feline. Cricket
understands her world not through human explanations, but through her own
senses, instincts, and experience as she navigates a world that gives few
second chances.

THE CALICO CAT AT THE CHIBINEKO KITCHEN
The heartwarming Japanese cat novel about fate and the healing power of food
By Yuta Takahashi, and “invitingly translated” (Booklist) by award-winning (and aptly named) translator Cat Anderson, this heartwarming and soul-enrichening series follows diners at a magical seaside café outside of Tokyo where they have the opportunity to speak to recently deceased loved ones—but just as long as their food is steaming hot. As our protagonists grapple with grief, love, and loss, they find closure and a new perspective on life with the help of a warm meal, a friendly cat, and a kindhearted chef. In a *starred review*, Library Journal praises the novel as “moving…this magical-realist novel, complete with recipes…features cats as wise guides.”
Since my beloved Cody passed on June 30th, 2020 as many of you know, my time blogging has been greatly limited. When Cody left, any desire to blog that I had left (to be frank, it was waning before he passed and his passing, as well as precious Dakota's nine days later, pretty much sealed the deal).
Eventually I returned, albeit sporadically. I also vowed to no longer do ANY book reviews. Why? Because many of them were just too painful for me to read. (Being candid, they STILL are.)
Back in April or May I was contacted by Sierra Koester, the writer who compiled the above book "Purrseverance" (Inspiring Stories of Cat Resilience and Hope). For those of you who may not be familiar with Sierra, she is "an award-winning freelance writer and professional blogger. Sierra is a Professional Member of the Cat Writer's Association and the Content Manager at The Cat Blogosphere, a place for all pets and pet bloggers. She also writes Fur Everywhere, an educational and entertaining blog about cats."
I'm not going to lie. I sat on this book for the LONGEST time because while it is now 4 years since Cody is gone, the pain is still raw. After enough guilt passed for not opening the book, I decided to finally read it.
I am glad that I did.
It was Sierra's own cat Jewel that was the inspiration behind this compilation. Jewel came to live with Sierra at the ripe old age of 14 after having lived a challenging life. Sierra penned, "it wasn't until I met Jewel that I understood just how remarkably resilient our feline friends can be. Jewel's persistence and resiliency served as the inspiration for this anthology that features other cats who have overcome life's struggles".
A few of my favorite stories in this book are:
My Name is Not Scooter-written by Lorianne Miller about her tripod kitty Evan. Lorianne writes the blog fourleggedfurballs.blogspot.com
Lazarus Cat-written by Sierra M. Koester about her precious cat Lita
Wren: "A Caged Kitty Can't Purr" written by Julia Williams. This one resonated with me because when I first adopted Cody, he didn't have the fur color that I preferred. I also remember following Julia on social media when she first adopted Wren and was trying to come up with a name for her.
Brian is Home-written by Terry Frum (who in the Cat Blogosphere is so well known he technically needs no introduction.) Terry doesn't just "talk the talk" he "walks the walk", rescuing a multitude of cats and tending to ferals for YEARS. Terry's beloved Brian, an endearing, wise, gentle and loving tabby boy won my heart many years ago when I first began blogging. Terry and his wife are two of the most dedicated pet parents I've ever known. Not just for their own pets, but Terry has been there for myself and countless others when we just needed an ear to offer support or anything else they may need. Brian, had many of the same qualities as Terry. He believed "if you're kind, then everyone gets along and we can overcome adversity together." You can find Terry's blog Brian's Home at brianshomeblog.com and you can also find Terry on the Cat Blogopshere:blog.catblogosphere.com.
Carmine Fulfills His Purpose-written by Sierra M. Koester about her beloved kitty Carmine.
AND MANY, MANY MORE!
It is Sierra's hope that the stories in this book inspire you the way they inspired her (AND ME!!!). Sierra reminds us that "sometimes even seemingly hopeless situations can turn around. Our feline friends have so much to wisdom to offer. The next time you are facing a difficult challenge, she hopes you'll choose to follow these cats' example to "NEVER GIVE UP!"
Inspirational New Book asks “Will I see my cat in heaven?”
"After she lost three aging cats in the space of a year and a
half, bestselling author Allia Zobel Nolan needed a resource that could soothe the gut-wrenching loss and at the same time elicit hope. She couldn’t find what she was looking for. So,
she wrote a book that would help her and other cat lovers grieve with an expectation that their
cat’s story was not at an end.
Heavenly Headbutts: Reflections of Hope about Cats and Eternity is 90 pages of affirming
scripture, engaging photographs, and short anecdotes and opinions by the author and everyone
from Isaiah to C. S Lewis, to George MacDonald and James Harriot. The book questions whether
the same animals who were our soulmates on earth will share our lives in some form or
another in the hereafter."
“My wish,” says Zobel Nolan, “is that Heavenly Headbutts will pull a soft coverlet of hope over
the hearts of those who’ve lost a beloved pet so they can put one foot in front of the other and
step out in faith.” But the book is not just for those grieving. “It encourages thoughtful
reflection and holds out joyous expectation to all cat lovers that their cat’s story is not finite. It
will last forever.”
Can Zobel Nolan confirm unequivocally that readers will hear sweet sounding purrs and feel the
gentle headbutts of their cats in the hereafter? “I provide the reassurance,” says the author,
“but it’s up to you to judge.”
FROM CAT AND DOG CHAT WITH CAREN:
I was excited to receive this book after having reviewed a couple other books by Allia Zobel Nolan. While the quotes/photographs didn't disappoint, being Jewish, I didn't expect the religious emphasis that this book would have. (Since most of you are not Jewish who are reading this, there are parts you will be able to relate to much better than I could.)
That being said, here are parts of the book that resonated with me:
"Our cats may be gone from this world physically. But I believe their spirits, the life glow God breathed into them at Creation, is still alive--in some shape or form. I believe their stories are not over yet. There are more hijinks, headbutts, and yes, even hairballs, awaiting us when we meet Cat again in the New Heaven and New Earth God has promised."
While Heavenly Headbutts wasn't quite what I had expected it to be, (what I expected I am not 100% sure, but I thought it would dwell more on our feelings when we lose a beloved pet, etc.), it is still a worthwhile read. Once again, those of you who appreciate a strong biblical reference based on Christianity, you will appreciate the book immensely. While I consider myself to be spiritual, I am not as familiar with the Bible as many of you probably are.
The book is currently available on Amazon in print and eBook editions:
https://tinyurl.com/ycwbk4r6. It retails for $13.99.

"Single with Cat is a feel-good romantic comedy perfect for readers who love cats, books and happy endings!!"
While I am NOT "single with cat" for many, many, MANY years I was, with my first cat, Bobo, hence the topic intrigued me. A man not liking my cat was a deal-breaker, a man who DID like my cat definitely required a second, or third look!
I am super familiar with Rosa's writing. I follow her blog and I have read/reviewed her other short, humorous cat books, as well as having thoroughly enjoyed a novella she had featured on her blog.
Rosa has a colorful, descriptive writing style. Her female lead characters are interesting and every detail about them from their personalities, their outfits, makeup, nails and shoes are described in depth. Many are women I would want to be friends with! (Some, not-so-much!)
"Single With Cat" is a super quick read at 200 pages. I finished it in about three hours, enjoying every moment, (I had a number of LOL moments!!) I found myself reading faster and faster, eagerly turning the pages, full of excitement, anxiously waiting to see what was going to happen next!!
I'm confident you, my cat loving readers, will enjoy it too! Now, enough of my babbling and read further to learn more about this FUN and INTERESTING book!
Olivia is back in her hometown to reopen the bookstore her grandmother left her. She has a whole plan mapped out for the Happy Endings Bookstore. Just one problem – she finds out the bank is ready to foreclose on the bookstore’s mortgage.
Gabriel, the bank manager, is as drop dead gorgeous as he is grouchy. Olivia hates the guy, but her cat Chili seems to love him. Now Olivia has three months to save the bookstore and rub it in Gabriel’s face.
Olivia tries everything to save the bookstore, but with a quest to find out the identity of an anonymous romance writer, her mother wanting to find her a husband, and her grandmother’s grouchy neighbor making her life hell, Olivia has a lot on her plate.
The tension between Olivia and Gabriel escalates as the deadline to save the bookstore approaches, but as the two slowly begin to let their guard down, they might learn that sometimes stepping outside one’s comfort zone can lead to the greatest reward.
"I write contemporary romance (with a bit of humor) and pretty much whatever I feel like writing. I like to write about people who are starting over either by choice or because life has forced them to do so. I believe in the power of new beginnings!"
I received an "ARC" copy of "Single With Cat" from Rosa with no expectation of my posting about it! I genuinely loved this book and wanted to share it with everyone!
If you are looking fora thought-provoking, touching, deeply sensitive and philosophical read that will draw you in and not release you until the very last page, I urge you to add this deeply touching book to your ever-growing cat library. It is simply beautiful. I had a few tears at the end (happy tears), I also had a few chills. I smiled, I cried, but most of all I was happy that I jumped on the opportunity to read this most beautiful story. It is my wish that you will do the same!
What I wrote above are my exact sentiments about A Sense Of Purpose, by Author Russell H. Plante. It is intended to be the sequel to Journey Home A Cat's Tale.
A Sense of Purpose
"A sense of purpose means having something in your life that, without you, might never be achieved or accomplished. We all have a sense of purpose, but we may not always understand its significance to our own lives or how it can affect others."
Allow me to repeat what is posted above on the back cover: "Inspired by actual events, this is a philosophical story for all ages about life's journey from the perspective of a cat---a journey that teaches us the things we do in life, no matter how small, can affect others in so many ways and that every living being has a sense of purpose..."
While the trailer is a tad ominous and dark, the book as a whole, is NOT. It is inspiring. It is comforting.
This time the focus is on Chester, an important character in Journey Home: A Cat's Tale. "he was that down to earth, honest and helpful character that we all wish existed in our lives, always there to help, to be a friend, to be a positive influence. who was orphaned on the streets of Manhattan." Chester, in the first book was known for teaching cats"how to observe the things around them, how to fight if I needed to, how to understand themselves better by putting themselves in the place of others and treating them as they would want to be treated, and how to be a good and decent cat."
Chester was definitely a "good and decent cat."
When I am reading books that I will be reviewing, I often dog-ear pages (yes, I know that is an awful thing to do, but I do it!) that contain excerpts that I might wish to refer back to when I am writing my review. When I finished "A Sense of Purpose" and looked to see what I had folded, the number of pages that I had folded were nearly THE ENTIRE BOOK. That is just an example of how compelling, thought-provoking and moving this book is.
I would like to share some of those excerpts with you, beginning with the dedication:
"For my wife---her kindness and compassion toward the plight of a homeless cat named Chester will always overwhelm me."
That quote, in and of itself gives you some insight into the kind of man/person that Russell Plante is. I got to know him more in the months following the passing of Cody and Dakota. When he reached out to me about his latest book, while he hoped that I would review it at some point, the main reason he wanted to send it to me was to try and bring me some comfort. At that time I was nowhere near ready to read or review ANY book, but Russell's gentle assurance that this book would touch me on so many levels, was spot on. I am thankful and grateful that Russell ignored my protests about not wanting to review any books. Russell, like Chester, DEFINITELY IS "a good and decent cat!!"
ANOTHER EXCERPT:
"Time passed quickly, and with it, I learned that sometimes you don't appreciate the special moments in life. It's just that you don't always recognize they ARE special moments until they're gone."
A Sense Of Purpose, along with many otherlife/characterlessons, inspires us to think about how all that has happened in our lives, the people and animals that we have met along the way, all of them have shaped us into who we are today. It is a heartfelt, moving and inspiring read. I found myself trying to read faster and faster as the events that unfolded piqued my interest and curiosity, and made me want to hurry and read what was going to happen next. While a few tears were shed, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and deeply sensitive and loving read, one that I had trouble putting down. As Russell had hoped would happen when he had emailed me to tell me about "A Sense Of Purpose", rather than bring me more pain, it brought me more comfort than I could have ever have imagined.
A final thought from A Sense of Purpose:
"You never say a final goodbye to those who touch your life and make a positive difference in some way. Sometimes they remain as fond memories from the past. Other times you might be fortunate if they're able to return and once again share your life in the present....Never forget, in one single moment, without warning, events can happen to any one of us and change our lives........"
I urge you to purchase BOTH of the books, Journey Home: A Cat's TaleAND the sequel, A Sense of Purpose by Russell H. Plante. They are available on Amazon,Barnes & Noble and please stop by Russell's websitewhere you can purchase the booksas well. You may also connect with him on Facebook.

Looking for a stocking stuffer for the holidays or a cute book for the cat lover in your life for a "just because" gift? Look no further:
Whether you have been the proud cat parent of one cat or ten, you will be able to relate to being woken by or greeted by a cat butt in your face! Sometimes it's hilarious, sometimes just plain gross.
FROM THE AUTHOR:
"Have you ever woken up and suddenly realized your cat's butt is right in your face? I know I have. In fact, my cat seems to make an effort to show me his butthole every chance he gets. Instead of getting upset, I decided to laugh it off, and write this hilarious book."
Not only does Author Rosa Silva have a funny take on cat butts in our faces but she also addresses how cats will quite often do the exact opposite of what we want them to do. From treating toys we think they will love with disdain, to biting us when we think they want to be petted. Cat lovers everywhere will be able to relate to the examples of cat quirkiness in this clever book that will put a smile on your face!!
"You are indeed a curious cat,
if I feed you kibble, you want a rat,
If I buy you a brand-new bed,
you sleep on the couch instead."
The illustrations by Diana Necsulescu are just purrfect! Vibrant and funny!
"Get Your Butt Off Of My Face"is a funny bedtime (or anytime) book for all the desperate cat owners ou there. This laugh-out-loud book reveals cats at their wackiest and performing their most exasperating behavior. "
When I was approached by author Russell H. Plante asking if I would review his book Journey Home: A Cat's Tale, after hearing the premise I was intrigued. There were things that reminded me of my Angel Bobo whom I had rescued huddling beneath a car in a driving blizzard, shivering and cold. I had seen him earlier that day, watching as he scaled a 6 ft chain link fence in the bitter cold. My ex and I were leaving to go away and couldn't take him then. When we returned 6 hours later I went to check to see if he was sitting under the car we saw him run to after scaling the fence and sure enough he was there. The rest is history. After a search for his previous owners that provided nothing, Bobo remained with me for 18 years. I always wondered what his story was, and what his life was like in the 6 months he was alive before he found me. I knew I had to read this book. Parts of this thought-provoking and heart-warming story are true. An Excerpt:"It's freezing cold and the bitter wind precipitates a chill factor well below zero. My whiskers are like frozen icicles, plastered against my face....a deep voice from within my past whispers quietly to me-reminding me....Survive." "This is a story based upon the actual life of a cat found abandoned in a dumpster, left to die, with his leg caught in a trap. Born in a small town on the coast of Maine, an unpretentious cat named 'Patches' encounters life changing experiences during his first two years. His siblings are given away, his father abandons him and his mother without explanation, and he's discarded by an uncaring owner and left homeless without food or shelter. As he wanders the streets to piece his life back together, he discovers new friends like Chester, a relocated cat from New York City, who helps him to find food and shelter: Chester taught me just about everything he could think of in order to help me survive and deal with my new environment. He taught me how to observe the things around me, how to fight if I needed to, how to understand myself better by putting myself in the place of others and treating them as I would want to be treated, and how to be a good and decent cat." The dialogue between Patches and his friends is often funny. I appreciated reading dialogue from a cat that was spoken in the way I imagine that cats would speak, INTELLIGENTLY, not in a baby talk sort of a way that is often attributed to cats. In my opinion if a cat could speak in the way humans speak, a cat would speak intelligently and sure wouldn't be speaking babytalk....but I digress. The dialogue is often deeply philosophic and inspiring. Inspiring us to think about how all that has happened in OUR lives has shaped us into who we are today.
"This is a story about Patches’ journey
from homelessness to finding a new life. It’s a story about losing his sisters
and finding them once again and his experiences as he acquires friends,
starting from the sad reality of his abandonment on a late September afternoon
and continuing into the bleak months of fall and winter in New England.
His journey defines who he becomes as he learns to survive. The realities
of life he experiences translate into many lessons from which we all can learn." One lesson is that when we lose a friend we shouldn't think of it as a loss per se, Patches learned that " even though friends leave, you don't really lose them, they are always there, within you. Even though you may not see them as often, you always have the memories of your experiences with them. That's something you can always cherish."
Journey Home "is a novel
that encourages hope and connects us with each other in order to help us see
the complexities faced by others. It is a story of hope, a sense of
helplessness and despair, the loss of innocence, and conviction – never giving
up, no matter the circumstance. It imparts an insight to appreciate the
meaning of friendship, to always move forward, and to evaluate situations
before passing judgement." "Each of us encounters obstacles during our lives, some more than others. There is uncertainty in everyone's life. Mine is no exception. I am who I am today because of both the good and bad things that have happened in my life. I guess we all have a better understanding of our lives as we age. I don't profess to know all of the answers, not even as I become more aware of life as I get older. But you must persist and give life a chance to work itself out." If you are looking fora thought-provoking, touching, deeply sensitive and philosophical read that will draw you in and not release you until the very last page, I urge you to add this deeply touching book to your ever-growing cat library. It is with great delight that I was able to get my paws on an advance copy of Cat Life:Celebrating the History, Culture & Love of the Cat by renowned pet expert/author, Amy Shojai. I have always been smitten with Amy's writing, as well as her musical talent and her knowledge of cats and dogs. I have had the pleasure of meeting her in person on several occasions, and she is as delightful, brilliant, colorful, exciting and knowledgeable in person as she is through her writing. It is easy to become smug when you have been reading cat books for over 10 years as I have (and many of you have as well), thinking "What more could ANYONE possibly have to say to enlighten me further about cats?" Well dear readers, Amy Shojai has done it again. Her expository book about cats has taught me more than I could have imagined!

The 150+ stunning color photographs, are captivating and simply exquisite. You will want to look at them again and again. This book reveals
virtually everything needed to appreciate this mysterious, lovable companion. It is a book that you will want to re-visit on numerous occasions.
From shojai.com"Though a cat may choose to share her affection with a human or two, she will always remain that quixotic mix of unpredictability and individuality that challenges the understanding of the most patient among us. It is as if they know that when they first stepped into the human ring of firelight, they forever altered our history, influencing our religions, our literature, our art—our very lives.” –From the Introduction
Chapter One, “Evolutionary Cat,” traces the domestic feline back to the Paleocene Era, then introduces its big cat relatives. Many of us know that several cats together is called a "clowder", but I never knew they can also be called a "cluster" or "clutter" of cats as well! Even Cody was captivated by the information!
I also never knew that the African wildcat is considered the most like our own domestic breeds "and is probably the founding father of the cat that is even now warming on your hearth."
Chapter Two, “Cultured Cat,” "is a survey of artistic homage paid to the cat. From Aesop’s fables to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, cats have been featured as analogy, metaphor, and hero."
"There used to be a kind of cheese made in Cheshire marked with a grinning cat face on one end. Is this where Lewis Carroll's wonderful Cheshire Cat came from?"
There are references to cats in Television, in ads, lore and legend about cats, and a plethora of other information about cats in culture.
Chapter Three, “Physical Cat,” is a guide to understanding and caring for your cat. There is information about the cat's eye, their hunting instinct, feeding, play, health issues I learned so much about a variety of health issues that cats may have that I had never known before.
Cat Life closes with a “Gallery of Breeds,” a parade of fascinating cat types with descriptions of their unique personalities and special characteristics. There is also a listing of various cat associations and you can find a fabulous reading list so you may purchase other books that Amy has written as well.
