Pet Supplies Plus In Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Starts Construction On Kitty City, A New Cageless Adoption Center For Cats And Kittens

 Pet Supplies Plus of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan,  has started construction on Kitty City, a new cageless adoption center that will provide a free-roaming environment for adoptable cats and kittens waiting for good homes.

Kitty City is the brainchild of store owner Addy Shattuck who has been adopting cats and kittens out of her three Pet Supplies Plus locations for 20 years.

Kitty City will enable cats and kittens to socialize with each other and look out of a floor-to-ceiling window in nearly 1,400 cubic feet of space equipped with perches, cat walks and other forms of kitty entertainment.  It will be constructed of plastic and glass to provide for a bacteria-free environment with multiple screens for ventilation.   A full-size door will enable prospective adopters to interact with the cats, which will come from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan and other shelters.  All cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and health checked and can be adopted for $59.

“Cats do not do well in a cage so we are creating an environment where they can be cats,” says Shattuck.  “It’s difficult to see the true personalities of these intelligent animals when they are confined in a small space.  We want the public to see just how unique each cat and kitten really is.  And we are hoping that a lot of them will find good homes as a result.”

Kitty City is scheduled for completion by August 2011. Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills is at 2057 Telegraph, north of Square Lake Rd.  For information, call 249-333-7545.

  7. What a great Pet Store! If we lived closer, we would go and see. Kozmo was in a little cage in the pet store too, but he gots to go home nights to the Humane Society. They had 4 rooms and lots of cats and cat toys. He says the cats there were way nicer than me. Me thinks he is a brat.

  8. What a great idea! Mama knew I was the kitty for her when I climbed the bars of my cage and meowed at her when she walked by. I would haf been much happier not being in a cage at all!

  9. Good for them. This is a wonderful idea. Candy & EK came from a foster home so they weren't caged either. They were happy, social, playful cats that were used to people and other animals. When cats are kept caged the shelter doesn't get to see how they do with people or other animals and the cats don't get used to anything either.

  14. @Oskar I agree!! I wish they would too!

    To everyone who said it was a great idea I agree!

    @Athena, I got Cody in a similar way. I actually picked up both of his litter mates (they were all in a huge cage) I liked the first one I picked up because it looked like my Angel Bobo, too bad, the kitty didn't like me, nor did the second kitty. Cody was my third (and now BEST) choice. He allowed me to pick him up, he settled in on my lap and he made NO attempt whatsoever to move. That was it. I was smitten! He is STILL a lover to this day!

    @Brian sooo true!

    @C Hipke, you should come with me, I am hoping to go to their grand opening of Kitty City!!!

    @Benny and Lily, oh yes they have super cool stuff! Bet you could order online! :)

    @The Monkeys, me too!

    @Pumpkin Puddy thank you so much for that info. It would make sense to me that they would do much better being out of a cage as well. I also hope others follow suit!

    @Nellie you are a silly girl!! NO wonder Kozmo is so much fun! He got to play instead of always being locked up in a cage!

    @The Chair Speaks I hope so too!

    @Amin it was the first I ever heard of it too!

  16. Kitty City sounds like a wonderful place. Kitties must be much happier in such environment. I agree, I don't think we can see the true personality if they are confined...I hope there will be more and more shelters like this.
