Free Pet Fitness Evaluations August 18th, International Homeless Animals' Day® 2012-As Part of 200-Cat Adoption Event August 17 thru August 19th At Bloomfield Pet Supplies Plus

Veterinarian Jonathan Ross of Ross Hospital for Animals in Bloomfield Hills says that obesity has become one of the top killers of dogs and cats, and he wants to do something about it.  Dr. Ross will provide free pet fitness evaluations at the Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus Pet Fitness Fair on August 18 being held in conjunction with the store’s 200-cat adoption event August 17-19.
According to Dr. Ross, overweight cats and dogs suffer from the same serious health conditions as overweight humans, including heart, kidney and thyroid disease; diabetes; hip dysplasia and arthritis.  While all of these conditions can be managed in the short-term, they significantly reduce a pet’s life span.  For example, a medium -size dog that is 20 pounds overweight can have its life span cut by one-third.

“People think that they’re making their pet happy when they over feed them or give them too many treats,” Dr. Ross says.  “They are actually harming them.  We are seeing young dogs having difficulty walking and cats under age 5 with diabetes.  Pet obesity is a huge pet health problem.”

Dr. Ross will conduct fitness evaluations of dogs and cats that include a body mass and weight assessment, and provide tips on early disease prevention and
nutrition information.   Vaccines and feline leukemia and heartworm tests will be
provided by VIP Pet Care.
The Pet Fitness Fair will also reach out to humans who want to get in shape with free computerized health screenings and healthy cooking demonstrations courtesy of Better Health Market of Bloomfield Hills.
Saturday is also:
So please consider coming out and ADOPTING
A KITTY THAT NEEDS A HOME!

August 17-19, a 200-cat adoption event will feature all different cat breeds, colors and personalities from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills and Roscommon Animal Shelter in Roscommon, Michigan, all looking for good homes.  Adoption fee of $59 includes spay/neuter, vaccines and tests.  Adopted cats and kittens get a free wellness exam courtesy of Ross Hospital for Animals.  The 100th cat adopter gets a $100 Pet Supplies Plus shopping spree and the 200th adopter gets a $500 Pet Supplies Plus shopping spree.
“At each adoption event, we are reminded how unique and special cats are,” said Addy Shattuck, owner of the Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus store, who has adopted out more than 5,000 cats from her stores.  “Unfortunately the shelters are overcrowded, so we are trying to do our part to find more of them homes.  We are excited that we will be working with both Oakland Pet Adoption Center and Roscommon Animal Shelter in this event.”
Roscommon Animal Shelter, in Roscommon County, Michigan, recently completed an extensive shelter renovation and has implemented an aggressive low-cost spay and neuter program.  Shelter director Terry MacKillop says the shelter will transport pets anywhere in Michigan if there is the potential for them to get adopted.   “If it means that an animal will find a new home, we will go to any means to get them placed,” he said.
The 200-cat adoption event hours are from 4 p.m. To 8 p.m., Friday, August 17; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, August 18 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, August 19.  The Pet Fitness Fair will run from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, August 18.
The event is being co-sponsored by Pet Supplies Plus and Better Health Market.
The Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus is at 2057 S. Telegraph, north of Square Lake Rd.  For information, call 248-333-7545 or go to www.petsuppliesplus.com.

Tips for keeping Fluffy & Fido fit
To help keep you your cat or dog in shape, Dr. Ross offers these tips:
  •  Resist overfeeding.  Do not leave bowls of food out all day. Instead designate regular mealtimes with portion control.  Keep treats to a minimum.
  • Feed cats and dogs high quality pet foods that are low in carbohydrates.
  • Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise and playtime.
  • For weight loss, follow a gradual plan, ideally under a veterinarian's care.  Rapid weight loss can cause fatty liver disease in cats.

Pet Supplies Plus opens Kitty City II free-roaming cat adoption center in White Lake Twp., Michigan

Grand opening includes
 100-cat adoption event June 1-3

When Addy Shattuck, owner of three Pet Supplies Plus stores in Oakland County, opened the first Kitty City adoption center in 2011, she never dreamed that so many felines  would find good homes as a result of her custom-designed cat habitat.  Her success with the first Kitty City has led to the opening of Kitty City II at Shattuck’s Pet Supplies Plus store in White Lake Twp.

Kitty City II is identical to the original Kitty City at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills.  Both are free- roaming, cage free adoption centers, designed by Shattuck, that enable kitties waiting for new homes to watch the birds outside through floor-to-ceiling windows, lounge in miniature arm chairs, and enjoy the soft breeze of an overhead ceiling fan.  Shattuck designed each Kitty City with plenty of perches for cats to climb, soft beds for sleeping and concealed litter boxes for privacy.  At any given time, each Kitty City is a temporary home to 20 or more cats.

The open environment enables the public to interact with the cats, get to know their unique personalities and, if Shattuck gets her way, fall in love and take home a new family member.  Cat adoptions at the Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus more than doubled with the opening of Kitty City.  Shattuck anticipates the same result in White Lake Twp.

“Kitty City allows the cats to be themselves.” says Shattuck.  “Prospective adopters can play with the kitties, get to know them and see how wonderful these cats are.   We have people coming into the store just to play with the cats.  And, of course, many of them end up adopting one.”

A Kitty City II grand opening at Pet Supplies Plus in White Lake Twp. includes a three-day, 100-cat adoption event starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 1 through  5 p.m. on Sunday,  June 3.  Adoption fee of $59 includes spay or neuter, vaccines and health check.   All cats are from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills or Elizabeth Lake Animal Rescue in Waterford.

On Sunday, June 3 customers can bring their cats and dogs to a pet health care fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. that includes free wellness exams and reduced cost vaccines, feline leukemia tests and microchipping provided by Union Lake Veterinary Hospital.  They will also be treated to a free barbecue lunch from noon to 3 p.m.

Guess who else will be there
 Sun, June 3rd? ME!
(If I can figure out how to get there!)
I am so excited to visit Kitty City II. I was at the first Kitty City and was overwhelmed. I am going to be volunteering Sunday June 3rd and can't wait to meet all of the furbabies!

Will there be a Kitty City III?  Shattuck is considering the possibility at her third Pet Supplies Plus store.  But for now, she’s hoping that the White Lake Twp. location will have a big impact on finding homes for homeless cats and kittens.

“Unfortunately, Oakland County has a huge overpopulation of cats” Shattuck said.  “We are hoping that Kitty City will help more people see just how wonderful cats are.”

Me! I visited the first Kitty City last year!
for those who missed the video I shot when I visited Kitty City I, here it is again! I am sorry for the amateur quality, hey I never said I possessed the video chops of Glogirly!
When I shot this I also had cats on my lap! Hard to maneuver the camera. The creator of Kitty City, (Addy) is in the shot with my husband!

My Day At Kitty City At Pet Supplies Plus In Bloomfield Hills, MI!! Grand Opening This Weekend Includes 200-Cat Adoption Event Dec. 9th thru Dec. 11th

Pet Supplies Plus launches first Kitty City
free-roaming cat adoption center

Center aims to find homes for more homeless cats & kittens in Oakland County

The "winds of change" as they pertain to cat adoption have arrived at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in the form of Kitty City,  an enclosed open-air environment where cats are free to be...well....CATS.

Kitty City at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills is giving homeless cats something to purr about this holiday.

I had the honor and delight of visiting this kitty haven a few days ago and felt myself on the verge of tears the entire time I was there.

Tears of sadness? No, tears of happiness. I witnessed the joy of watching adoptable cats feeling happy, content and safe. I watched them play, groom each other, investigate, sunbathe and simply enjoy each others' company while my heart smiled.

The moment I walked in I "oooohed and ahhhhed" at the surroundings. I  plopped myself down on the floor where I was promptly rewarded by a loving ball of fur who claimed me as their new "easy chair" and stayed on my lap the entire time that I was there. Oh these cats are clever, in this environment it is much easier for them to use their feline wiles to win you over with displays of affection such as I witnessed.

Would a scene such as the above be re-enacted if the cat had been in a cage? Never. Being able to interact with a cuddly kitty will greatly increase the likelihood of its being adopted and ultimately that is the objective.

We are all used to seeing adoptable cats looking listlessly back at us from their jail-like  confines. No toys, no sunbeams, no play partners, just the four walls of their cages. Think a cat is happy waiting for their forever home in an environment like that? You try living in a cage and see how you would feel.

Kitty City, was created by Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus store owner Addy Shattuck, who told me she has been involved with finding homes for adoptable cats for the past twenty years. When you visit Kitty City you can tell the warm and homey environment was lovingly created by a cat lover (Addy has seven cats of her own).

I was so smitten with Kitty City and its residents that I could have stayed there for hours, happily petting, cooing to and giggling at the clowder that surrounded me. Addy joked that I looked so comfortable and thrilled with being there that she was going to put a cot in the room just for me so that I could stay there permanently. Sounds like a plan to me!

There are miniature wing-back chairs, kitty condos, varying levels of "cat shelves" or ledges if you will, staggered on the warm brick walls. There is a wicker sleeping area, numerous cat scratchers ( I added two more to their collection when I visited),  plenty of cat toys to go around (Cody also kindly donated a number of his lightly-to-never-used toys), ample litter boxes and plenty of bowls of kibble for when the munchies kick in.

Kitty City is housed at the front of the store and is enclosed by glass which stretches from ceiling to floor (that is one heck of a size for "Kitty TV!!"), which enables the kitties to take sunbaths, watch people passing to and fro and of course the occasional tease of "Bird TV".  When I was there it was a bright sunshiny day and a number of the cats were lounging in their favorite "sun puddles" as they would be if they were in their adoptive home.  Had they been in a cage that luxury would be non-existent.

Addy keeps the safety of the kitties at the forefront by making sure that no one other than her staff may enter Kitty City at random -- you need a key to get in. This helps assure that a curious kitty won't come darting out with the opening and closing of doors.

People who are seeking to adopt a cat can watch their antics through the glass window, or  if they are so inclined, Addy will let them in and they can observe, play with and really get a feel for the personality behind their soon-to-be new feline friend.

When I was there a woman stopped by who had recently had a kitty cross over
The Rainbow Bridge. I watched as she observed a number of the cats and how she proceeded to comment on how "this one is playful, this one is more shy, this one is a lover." I marveled at the fact that if the cats were in cages this is something a potential adopter would not be able to discern.

“The open environment lets the cats play and do what cats do while waiting for their real home," says Shattuck.  They are so much more relaxed and content instead of being locked up.  Customers love just to come in and watch the cats."

Kitty City will officially open with a holiday grand opening celebration, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, December 9, that includes free refreshments, cat food samples and in-store specials, along with 200 cats that will be up for adoption from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, December 9; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sat., December 10 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11.

Adopters get a free wellness exam for their cat or kitten provided by The Cat Practice of Birmingham, Michigan’s first feline-only veterinary hospital.  Adoption fee of $59 includes spay or neuter, vaccines and health check.   All cats are from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills.

While the Bloomfield Hills Pets Supplies Plus has been adopting out homeless cats for years, Kitty City has already made a difference.  Since opening just a few months ago, the store has already seen cat adoptions increase as shoppers are drawn to watching the antics of the felines through the window.

“Unfortunately, Oakland County has a huge overpopulation of cats” Shattuck said.  “We are hoping that Kitty City will help more people see just how wonderful cats are as pets.”

Holiday grand opening includes 200-cat adoption event Dec. 9-11

Center aims to find homes for more homeless cats & kittens in Oakland County

From the floor-to-ceiling window, to the miniature wing-back chairs, to the cat-size perches, the new Kitty City at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills is giving homeless cats something to purr about this holiday.

Kitty City, created by Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus store owner Addy Shattuck, is a free-roaming cat habitat that gives felines a place to lounge, watch birds at an outdoor feeder and mingle with other cats while hoping that someone will spot them, fall in love and take them home.  The glass and screen enclosed open-air environment also enables humans to interact with the cats.

I am excited because I am going to be visiting Kitty City next week! I am not sure if I am actually going to be at the grand opening or if I will visit a day or two before the grand opening but no matter what I am going to be there!!! Will DEFINITELY take photos! I love the concept of the kitties not being in cages. It is a "homey" environment that I think has to be better for the kitties!

Pet Supplies Plus In Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Starts Construction On Kitty City, A New Cageless Adoption Center For Cats And Kittens

Pet Supplies Plus of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan,  has started construction on Kitty City, a new cageless adoption center that will provide a free-roaming environment for adoptable cats and kittens waiting for good homes.

Kitty City is the brainchild of store owner Addy Shattuck who has been adopting cats and kittens out of her three Pet Supplies Plus locations for 20 years.

Kitty City will enable cats and kittens to socialize with each other and look out of a floor-to-ceiling window in nearly 1,400 cubic feet of space equipped with perches, cat walks and other forms of kitty entertainment.  It will be constructed of plastic and glass to provide for a bacteria-free environment with multiple screens for ventilation.   A full-size door will enable prospective adopters to interact with the cats, which will come from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan and other shelters.  All cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and health checked and can be adopted for $59.

“Cats do not do well in a cage so we are creating an environment where they can be cats,” says Shattuck.  “It’s difficult to see the true personalities of these intelligent animals when they are confined in a small space.  We want the public to see just how unique each cat and kitten really is.  And we are hoping that a lot of them will find good homes as a result.”

Kitty City is scheduled for completion by August 2011. Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills is at 2057 Telegraph, north of Square Lake Rd.  For information, call 249-333-7545.
