Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) Reduces Pet Adoption Fees April 5-13

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) is reducing and waiving adoption fees on many of its dogs and cats April 5-13, 2019.

“Our generous FAMD Board has donated funds to make sure some wonderful dogs, cats, puppies and kittens find forever homes,” said Elaine Greene, FAMD executive director. “To adopt, simply fill out an online questionnaire to meet with an adoption counselor and start the process.”

“Falling in love costs a lot less this month,” added Greene.

“The FAMD board of directors is committed to furthering our mission of saving all adoptable animals and inspiring healthy relationships between people and their companion animals and, therefore, has offered to financially cover adoption fees,” said MaryAnn Wright, FAMD board chair.

Descriptions and prices for the adoptable animals can be found on the FAMD website at www.metrodetroitanimals.org.  Most of the adoptable animals can be met in the new MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption and Education Center at 16121 Reckinger Road in Dearborn, although some are in foster homes or one of FAMD’s Cat Adoption Centers.

All FAMD pets have been microchipped, neutered or spayed and received a medical exam and age-appropriate vaccinations before they go to their new homes.

Pet Adoption:2018 Is Record Year for Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit with 1,984 Animal Adoptions, Opening of New Shelter

During a busy 25^th anniversary year when Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) opened the MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption & Education Center, the organization also saw a record number of dog and cat adoptions: 1,984. This is 69 more than last year’s record high of 1,915.

  

The last adoption of 2018 was a cat named Bubly on New Year’s Eve.  He was extremely shy so the family that adopted him spent all day making him comfortable with the idea of going home with them.  Once settled, he made the move to his new home in Dearborn with owner Kyle Polidori.

To start 2019, the first adoption of the New Year was Mr. Fuzzy Britches, a cat.  He went home with Mary Ann Lawler and her daughter, Laura Manrique, a FAMD youth volunteer.

“2018 was an amazing year,” said Elaine Greene, executive director, FAMD.  “The new MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption & Education Center is the culmination of more than 10 years of fundraising and is so beautiful.  I give a lot of credit to all the staff and volunteers for their hard work and devotion to animals every day.”

The MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption & Education Center is located at the former Amtrak station in Dearborn at 16121 Reckinger Road, just off Michigan Avenue near the Henry Ford Centennial Library.  The land was donated to FAMD by the City of Dearborn.

FAMD is using the current shelter at 2661 Greenfield Road as an intake center for dogs and cats. Animals are housed there while they are prepared for adoption; often that means spay/neutering, microchipping and other medical services.

Plans are underway for Phase Two of the new shelter which will house animal services and bring everyone together at one location on the Reckinger campus. Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit Celebrate Opening and Dedication of Animal Adoption and Education Center

Dozens of homeless dogs and cats are moving into new digs while awaiting their “forever homes” as Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) celebrates the opening and dedication of phase one of its new, state-of-the-art shelter and Animal Adoption & Education Center (AAEC).

The AAEC replaces the adoption function of Dearborn Animal Shelter, a 30-year-old shelter located at 2661 Greenfield Road. The new facility will have upgraded, larger housing and improved air systems that will keep FAMD's adoptable animals happy and heathy. The land for the new center was donated to FAMD by the City of Dearborn, and $5.1 million was raised by members of the community through a capital campaign to fund the project. The new 10,000-square foot center will be named after a prominent animal welfare advocate.

FAMD will continue to utilize the Dearborn Animal Shelter for animal services and administrative offices, until phase two of AAEC is complete.

Adopt A Cat! Michigan Humane Society makes pets free for veterans, active soldiers

How great THIS is with June being Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! Veterans and members of the armed forces can now adopt pets for free from the Michigan Humane Society. This “standing order” includes more than 150 animals at eight locations in three counties.

The state’s largest pet rescue launched the MHS for Military program, presented by Sellers Subaru, on Flag Day, or June 14. That is when veterans filled its Hofley Pet Education Center in Detroit. It also comes six months after WalletHub ranked Detroit as the worst city for veterans to live.
“Soldiers deserve to return home to a grateful country and loving companions. We are happy to give back in this small way,” said Matthew Pepper, president and CEO of MHS. “It’s the least we can do given the freedom they provide us and the support we enjoy from our community.”

MHS believes its new program may be the first of its kind in the nation. This is because it has no exclusions according to Andrew Seltz, vice president of community engagement and field services.
“Those who qualify are not limited to cats, pets of a certain age, or those with disabilities,” explained Seltz, an Army veteran. “Thanks to the generous support of presenting sponsor Sellers Subaru, MHS for Military gives adopters the freedom to take any animal they want — for free.”
MHS also partners with Pets for Patriots. This charity helps veterans adopt discounted pets nationwide.

 Begins 25th Anniversary Year Celebration!

During a busy year when Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) broke ground for its new shelter, the organization also saw a record number of dog and cat adoptions: 1,915.  This is 194 more than last year’s record high of 1,721.

The last adoption of 2017 was a dog named Mimi (pictured above).  She was brought into the shelter on Christmas Eve as a stray dog. After a bath and some trimming to remove the burrs from her fur, her personality began to show through. Mimi found her forever home with Mary from Ann Arbor the day she became available.

To start the New Year, the first adoption of 2018 was Kass, a sweet lost cat.  She went home with Caeley Nau from Taylor.

“2017 saw the need in our community increase to record levels,” said Elaine Greene, executive director, FAMD.  “I give a lot of credit to staff and volunteers for the hard work and creativity they approach our work with every day.  We’ve got another big year ahead with the construction and opening of our new shelter later in 2018.”


The Animal Adoption & Education Center (AAEC) will be located at the former Amtrak station in Dearborn at 16121 Reckinger Road, just off Michigan Avenue near the Henry Ford Centennial Library.  The land was donated to FAMD by the City of Dearborn.


The AAEC will be a new, state-of-the-art animal shelter that provides homeless animals a refuge in an environmentally-friendly facility. It will replace the current shelter at 2661 Greenfield Road, which is almost 40 years old, overcrowded and no longer suitable for the animals or the people who care for them.

“With nearly 1,000 adoptable animals from around the state in one place, there is no better place to find a four-legged best friend than at Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo,” said CJ Bentley, MHS Senior Director of Operations. “Whether you’re looking for a cuddle bug, an exercise buddy or a mix of both, you’re sure to find a wonderful companion.”

Dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from 35 animal welfare organizations including the Michigan Humane Society will be available for adoption. All dogs and cats will have received a medical check-up and age-appropriate vaccinations.

The Detroit Zoo is located at 8450 W. 10 Mile Road in Royal Oak. There is no charge for admission or parking for the event, which takes place under large tents in the front parking lot. The event does not include admission to the zoo.

 The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) is celebrating “Pet Independence Days” now through Sunday, July 10 with low-cost adoption fees for cats and dogs (excluding lap dogs) who are 1-year-old and older. During the promotion, an adult cat or dog can be adopted for $17.76 at any MHS adoption location. The regular MHS adoption process will apply, and all adoptions will include the valuable MHS adoption package.

“Summer is all about families spending time together, and many homeless pets are waiting for their second chance to be a part of a family,” said CJ Bentley, MHS Senior Director of Operations. “We’re celebrating the Independence Day holiday by reducing adoption fees so the dogs and cats in our care can more quickly pursue their forever homes and a lifetime of happiness.”

The first of two tented Adopt-a-Thons this summer takes place on Saturday, June 14^th  from 10am-5pm in the parking lot in front of Home Depot in Allen Park in the Fairlane Green II shopping mall, locally known as “On the Hill”, near Oakwood Boulevard and Southfield Freeway.  The Dearborn Animal Shelter plans to have 80 animals available for adoption that day in all shapes and sizes, kittens, puppies, adult cats and dogs.

Counselors will be on hand to help potential adopters find their new best friend, including a meet and greet area to get to know dogs a little better in a separate section.  Attendees will enjoy adoption specials, can shop Shelter merchandise and Fido Bakery treats for their canine best friends.

A fun new addition this year, pet psychics are stopping by the Adopt-A-Thon from 12 noon to 2pm.  They will help share insight with new adopters about ways in which the new pet family member can settle in to their home more easily. 

Summer is a busy time for animal shelters, especially as kitten season moves into full swing, so there are many pets for families to consider.   Elaine Greene, Executive Director, Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter, commented “This Adopt-A-Thon is a great way for us to feature many adoptable pets in a high-profile location.  We are essentially making the Shelter mobile for a day, bringing pets to the public to find their new best friend”.   

The second Summer Adopt-A-Thon will take place in the parking lot of Westborn Mall on Saturday, August 16^th, at the intersection of Outer Drive and Michigan Avenue.

“iFoster” to Help Find Homes for Animals via the Social Networks of the Fosters

Dearborn Animal Shelter Introduces “iFoster” to Help Find Homes for Animals

Innovative virtual campaign encourages individuals to assist on their own timeline

The Dearborn Animal Shelter in Michigan, continues to see a constant flow of homeless animals through its doors this year.  Traditional methods of finding homes for the adoptable animals are not keeping pace with the rate in which the Shelter needs to find adoptive homes for the pets in waiting.

To help increase the adoption success, a new program was recently launched to encourage supporters to help 24/7.  Elaine Greene, Executive Director, Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter commented “Many of the people looking for pets or supporting the Shelter are already frequent users of social media and the internet, so we thought this could be an easy step for them to help. Our team developed what we call iFoster, a virtual way for someone to help us promote an adoptable animal, using their own social media or email messages”.

The program is quite simple.  A supporter contacts the Shelter via email and indicates they are interested in becoming an iFoster.  A team member reaches out to them and sends a short email with a link to the photo and description of an adoptable pet.  Then, the supporter shares about that pet in their own social media, Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest, email, anywhere they share virtual messages.

Greene continued, “This is a great way for someone to get involved that doesn’t have time during the day to volunteer at the Shelter or the ability to adopt or foster an animal in their home.  All we are asking is for them to use their keyboard to share about the adoptable pet”.  Once the pet is adopted, a team member contacts the supporter to share the good news and inquire if they want to take another animal to iFoster.  Supporters can do so as often or as little as they choose.

In 1993, the Michigan Humane Society (MHS) and the Detroit Zoological Society partnered to create a unique adoption event called “Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo.” Now, 20 years later, nearly 20,000 animals have been adopted during Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo, which is today the largest off-site adoption event in the country. MHS and the Detroit Zoo will continue that tradition on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Michigan. Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo is presented by Purina ONE.

“The hard work of so many wonderful animal welfare groups and key partners like the Detroit Zoo, Purina and PetSmart Charities, as well as the continued support of the community, is what makes this lifesaving effort possible and has made Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo the largest offsite adoption event in the country,” said Michael Robbins, vice president of Marketing and Communications at the Michigan Humane Society. “This year’s event is going to be even bigger and better, with more groups participating than ever before. Hundreds of adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be available for immediate adoption from MHS and more than 20 additional organizations at the largest off-site pet adoption event in the country.

Last year, the spring Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo event found homes for 498 animals. Since its inception in 1993, the event has helped more than 16,000 animals find new, loving families.
