Happy 2nd Adoption Day to Our Roary!!

 It is so hard to believe our adorable "marshmallow boy" Roary has been with us TWO YEARS!!! It's time to celebrate!!!  I had introduced you to Roary quite some time ago and for this post there will be a mix of his intro post and some new photos! Hope you enjoy!

Two years ago, I believe in August I thought I might be up for adding a kitty to our family again, I wasn't sure, but I subscribed to a number of sites and figured if it was meant to be it would be. One day after meeting two other cats that were instantly obvious, they were NOT the right ones, I saw this:

Yes, Roary began his life as a "Felix!" I saw this face and instantly fell in love. I decided to send Lenny to PetSmart to check him out in his cage first, just to see if he was friendly. Lenny came home with a great report, "Felix" held his paw out to Lenny and proceeded to work his way into his heart. I promptly filled out an application, they checked my references, and an appointment was made to meet "Felix" on September 21, 2020.

The rest is history! "Felix" instantly was named Roary, (after the Detroit Lions mascot), and we promptly adopted him. Roary was born June 10, 2020. He was a little over 3 months old when he joined our family. What strikes me as strange is Dakota was diagnosed with cancer on June 8th, we found out Cody had to have biopsy surgery on June 9th and Roary was born June 10th. It certainly seems that a higher power had a plan that I knew nothing about.

Our Roary, a friendly, playful, adorable bundle of fur came into our house like a terror. He was into EVERYTHING (and I DO mean EVERYTHING!) From getting behind the washer/dryer, to getting stuck under our china cabinet (or so we thought, until we called the Fire Department and Roary came out 2 minutes before they arrived after being under it for nearly an hour) .......we knew we had a real character on our hands. He went from being UNDER the china cabinet to scaling it.

Roary LOVES to give kisses, he LOVES being held, cuddled and petted. NOTE: BY HIS DADDY!!! Roary is the ONLY one of the three cats I have had that really isn't into ME!!! Don't get me wrong, he loves me, (mostly for food lol) and talks to me. But for Roary, the world revolves around his DADDY and yes, even Levi. BEFORE ME!!

Unlike Cody who was completely disinterested in boxes, Roary has yet to meet a box that he DOESN'T like!

Roary and Levi get along much better than they did a year ago. We still can't allow Levi to be out of his crate ALONE with Roary if no one is home, because Levi still plays too rough. Levi feels that Roary's HEAD should be in HIS MOUTH! (I know Roary looks delicious and ready-to-eat, but we don't want Levi taking that literally!!)

Roary was a most darling kitten, and he is an adorable cat. He has grown into his body, but his head seems surprisingly small. It's as if his body grew but his head decided to stay the same! 

 

Look at the above photo and check out the photo on the left with the blue socks in it. Roary's latest obsession is OPENING MY SOCK DRAWER and he TAKES OUT THE SOCKS!!! Every day I find socks that Roary brings to me in the kitchen. He doesn't just play with them, he DELIVERS them to ME.  I'm assuming that this is the way that he shows me he loves TOLERATES me.

Every day we are grateful for our fun, adventurous, mischievous Roary. He is truly a special boy. He's kind, patient and extremely intelligent. We love our "Marshmallow" boy and wouldn't trade him for the world!

When Lenny and I adopted Roary we originally learned about him on Petfinder. Wag Animal Rescue had rescued him. When Lenny went to see him first to see if he was a good fit he was at the Livonia Petsmart.

As a result, I  donated to Petfinder, Petsmart Charities and Wag Animal Rescue (which I set up as a monthly recurring donation). Can't think of a better way to honor the amazing Betty White!

Michigan Pet Adoption:Paws for Life Rescue’s Annual Halloween Fur Bowl To Take Place In Madison Heights

Every fall, Paws for Life hosts one of its largest fundraisers of the year, the annual Halloween Fur Bowl. Costume-clad kids and adults pay $25 each to bowl three games, which includes shoe rental and pizza and pop for lunch. For 2019, the annual Fur Bowl moves to Astro Lanes in Madison Heights on Sunday, October 27, starting at noon. Astro Lanes is located at 32388 John R Rd. in Madison Heights.

“We have always received strong support from the Madison Heights community,” said Courtney Protz-Sanders, executive director of the non-profit animal rescue Paws for Life. “Several years ago, we donated canine oxygen masks to the Madison Heights fire department and our partnership with the city has only grown from there.”

Paws for Life’s Fur Bowl goes beyond bowling, which means there’s something for everyone, even non-bowlers. Everyone is welcome to come out and play the raffles, bid on the silent auction items, enter the Halloween costume contest for kids and adults (prizes will be awarded), check out the Buy It Now board and partake in the plethora of goodies in the bake sale.

All Fur Bowl proceeds benefit the homeless pets of Paws for Life. Since Paws for Life has no paid staff and receives no government support, every penny donated and raised goes directly to the animals in its care.

Our Hearts and Our Candles are Shining for Orphan Pets #RememberMeThursday

Hi every furry and human! It's Cody, and I am here to tell you that today is a most impawtant day. It is the day when we honor the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home, and shine a light on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption. Mom and I are proud to have participated in this impawtant day for the past five years.

Remember Me Thursday® is a global awareness campaign that was created by the Helen Woodward Animal Center,  that unites individuals and pet adoption organizations around the world.  The combined influence creates  an unstoppable, integrated voice for orphan pets to live in forever homes and to not die waiting for them.

I am a rescue kitty

My litter mates and I were blessed to have had an amazing foster mother and I was adopted by my current Mom when I was only 10 weeks old. My Mom adopted me two weeks after her beloved kitty, Bobo, passed, whom she lived with for 18 beautiful years.  Bobo was rescued from the streets when he was about six months old. When Mom adopted me she had a broken heart.

Adopting ME helped Mom in many ways. Mom always tells me adopting me was one of the most special days in her life.

I am a Lucky Kitty

 Things could have been different.

I never roamed the streets looking for warmth, water, food or shelter.

I wake up every day to a family who loves me. I have a full belly, sunny perches to sit on, toys to play with, warm beds to snuggle and sleep on. I have regular Veterinary care.

I am loved and I give love

My Mom and Dad love me with all of their heart. I try to repay that every day by showing them my ample belly so that they may rub it. I sit with my Mom every night when she watches TV. I "talk" to my Dad at every meal. My Mom and Dad gave me a home where I am loved, I bring them laughs, love, cuddles and kitty kisses in return.

Today I want to acknowledge animals who weren't as lucky as me and pray for those who are still waiting to be adopted.

Animal lovers across the planet will honor these loving babies

 by lighting candles on the exact same day.

Adoptable Cat: "Athena" Please Adopt Her in Honor of Cody's 12th Gotcha Day!

Hi dear friends!! Today, is Cody's 12th Gotcha Day and in honor of this special day, it is extremely important for us to feature a certain beautiful adoptable cat named Athena.

I first met Athena at the Petco located at 29335 Orchard Lake Rd in Farmington Hills, MI over a month ago. It could easily have been TWO months ago, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why she hasn't been adopted.

The first time I met her, she was eager to stick her paw out of the cage and play with me. She has the most charming personality. She is precious.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO ME?

Today, when I went to Petco to pick up cat food for Cody and some dog treats for Dakota, as I walked through the doors of Petco I prayed that Athena would NOT be there. But.........there she was. She was in a different cubby but it was her. I mentioned to the salesperson at Petco that I was shocked that she was still there, the salesperson said it wasn't the same cat, (puhlease....I know my cats)... I remember her being there because each and every time I would go in I would stop and play with her.  (this is the 4th or so time I have seen her over at least a 2 month period of time),  IT IS DEFINITELY  HER. I remember her name because of our blogging friend Athena, and because I LOVE her name.

It was ironic that I went there today.  Lately I have been getting Cody's food elsewhere, but today,  (this blog post was written on Saturday, July 27th and Cody was adopted on July 28th, 2007),  it is 12 years almost to the DAY that Cody was adopted. He was also adopted from a Petco in Farmington Hills, but at their former location further down the road.

Cody has brought me nothing but joy for the 12 years he has been with us (well, he CAN be a pain but we adore him) and in honor of Cody's 12th Gotcha Day it would mean the WORLD to me if this sweet girl would be adopted too.

My Story

Hi ya! My name is Athena. I was born in November 2017. I am a beautiful short-haired kitty with white and brown tabby markings. I am young, playful and full of life. I love to play with toys. I love to climb and perch atop the cat tower. I will chase kitty wands and pounce on feathery toys, but when I'm not playing, I am ready to settle down for a comfy catnap. I always use a litterbox like a good girl and I am ready for the home of my dreams. You can come meet me at the Petco store in Farmington Hills any time its open. I'll be there waiting to fall in love with you. Adoption fee: $60. Adopt a pair: $90. Fee includes testing, deworming, vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip and 30 days of free pet insurance.

WHY DIDN'T I ADOPT ATHENA?

Believe me, I came close. History almost repeated itself...almost. I had to stop myself. Years ago our Vet felt it wouldn't be a great idea for us to adopt a third pet for a couple reasons: 1) he was afraid it would disturb the unique dynamic that Cody and Dakota have 2) financial. I just don't think we could afford a third pet, especially now. Both boys are 12 years old. Dakota now has hypertension and Cody is on Pred for a cough he has had for a few months (he hasn't coughed since being on Pred). Our Vet trips have become much more frequent, and at this time, and at the stages of both of their lives, I am afraid it wouldn't be fair to anyone. Not to Cody, Dakota....or even Athena. I am not sure how they would feel about a third pet, plus our condo association rules are no more than 2 pets per unit.

If I can help Athena find a home and right on Cody's 12th Gotcha Day no less it would be the most beautiful thing EVER!!!!

‘Tis the Season for Kittens and the Michigan Humane Society’s annual Kitten Shower

Spring is finally here and that means it’s kitten season! To help prepare for newborn kittens, many of them orphans, MHS is holding its annual Kitten Shower to support their Kitten Project. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, June 15 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. inside the Berman Center for Animal Care at 900 North Newburgh Road, Westland, MI 48185.

A kitten shower is a baby shower for newborn kittens that gives the Michigan Humane Society the opportunity to educate the public about neonatal kittens and the importance of fostering. Just like a regular shower, the Michigan Humane team has created a baby registry to assist in providing much needed supplies for the hundreds of kittens entering the shelters. This event will allow guests of all ages to enjoy kitten snuggling, crafts, games, refreshments and more. During the event, guest can attend a 30-minute workshop about how they can become fosters and help care for the newborn kittens.

“Kittens are a vulnerable population in shelters across the country, not just here in Michigan, due to the special care they require” says Dr. Clarissa Funke, DVM, of Michigan Humane. “Our Kitten Project, with the kick-off shower event, has allowed us to save hundreds more kittens than ever before and create so many new families.”

Guests are also encouraged to brings items from the MHS baby registry. The items on this list will help the caregivers care for the newborns. These items include blankets, food dishes, formula, heating pads, kennels, syringes and more. To RSVP for the shower and get registry information, please visit michiganhumane.org/kittenshower.  Supporters can then bring their gifts or item receipt to the shower and have the chance to adopt a feline for free.

Those unable to attend the shower can also drop their gifts off at Michigan Humane’s adoption centers in Detroit, Rochester Hills, Westland and Petco of Sterling Heights. Supporters can also donate online at MichiganHumane.org/donate.

Pet Adoption:2018 Is Record Year for Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit with 1,984 Animal Adoptions, Opening of New Shelter

During a busy 25^th anniversary year when Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) opened the MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption & Education Center, the organization also saw a record number of dog and cat adoptions: 1,984. This is 69 more than last year’s record high of 1,915.

  

The last adoption of 2018 was a cat named Bubly on New Year’s Eve.  He was extremely shy so the family that adopted him spent all day making him comfortable with the idea of going home with them.  Once settled, he made the move to his new home in Dearborn with owner Kyle Polidori.

To start 2019, the first adoption of the New Year was Mr. Fuzzy Britches, a cat.  He went home with Mary Ann Lawler and her daughter, Laura Manrique, a FAMD youth volunteer.

“2018 was an amazing year,” said Elaine Greene, executive director, FAMD.  “The new MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption & Education Center is the culmination of more than 10 years of fundraising and is so beautiful.  I give a lot of credit to all the staff and volunteers for their hard work and devotion to animals every day.”

The MaryAnn Wright Animal Adoption & Education Center is located at the former Amtrak station in Dearborn at 16121 Reckinger Road, just off Michigan Avenue near the Henry Ford Centennial Library.  The land was donated to FAMD by the City of Dearborn.

FAMD is using the current shelter at 2661 Greenfield Road as an intake center for dogs and cats. Animals are housed there while they are prepared for adoption; often that means spay/neutering, microchipping and other medical services.

Plans are underway for Phase Two of the new shelter which will house animal services and bring everyone together at one location on the Reckinger campus. Cost for the expansion is anticipated to be $3.5 million. To donate to the capital campaign for the animal services building, visit www.metrodetroitanimals.org.
