When Lenny and I adopted Roary we originally learned about him on Petfinder. Wag Animal Rescue had rescued him. When Lenny went to see him first to see if he was a good fit he was at the Livonia Petsmart.

As a result, I  donated to Petfinder, Petsmart Charities and Wag Animal Rescue (which I set up as a monthly recurring donation). Can't think of a better way to honor the amazing Betty White!

"This Little Light of Mine"...is Shining for Orphan Pets #RememberMeThursday

Hi every furry and human! It's Cody, and I am here to tell you that today is a most impawtant day. It is the day when we honor the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home, and shine a light on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption. Cody and I are proud to have participated in this impawtant day for the past four years.


Remember Me Thursday® is a global awareness campaign that was created by the Helen Woodward Animal Center,  that unites individuals and pet adoption organizations around the world.  The combined influence creates  an unstoppable, integrated voice for orphan pets to live in forever homes and to  not die waiting for them.

I am a rescue kitty

My litter mates and I were blessed to have had an amazing foster mother and I was adopted by my current Mom when I was only 10 weeks old. My Mom adopted me two weeks after her beloved kitty, Bobo, passed, whom she lived with for 18 beautiful years.  Bobo was rescued from the streets when he was about six months old. When Mom adopted me she had a broken heart.

Adopting ME helped Mom in many ways. Mom always tells me adopting me was one of the most special days in her life.

I am a Lucky Kitty

 Things could have been different.

I never roamed the streets looking for warmth, water, food or shelter.

I wake up every day to a family who loves me. I have a full belly, sunny perches to sit on, toys to play with, warm beds to snuggle and sleep on. I have regular Veterinary care.

I am loved and I give love

My Mom and Dad love me with all of their heart. I try to repay that every day by showing them my ample belly so that they may rub it. I sit with my Mom every night when she watches TV. I "talk" to my Dad at every meal. My Mom and Dad gave me a home where I am loved, I bring them laughs, love, cuddles and kitty kisses in return.

Today I want to acknowledge animals who weren't as lucky as me and pray for those who are still waiting to be adopted.

The most recent hurricane, (Florence) has  separated pets from their owners, some because their owners can no longer afford to keep them, some because the owners cannot be found, some because the animals were already homeless.  All of these animals DESERVE LOVE, they DESERVE A FOREVER HOME.

It is my deepest hope that  they all find loving homes.

Animal lovers across the planet will honor these loving babies

 by lighting candles on the exact same day.

Prepare NOW for Remember Me Thursday®

Causes to help promote the importance of adopting animals who are in shelters and for those with NOWHERE to go are in the limelight today, (we feel they should be EVERY DAY, but that's another matter altogether). Today is International Homeless Animals Day and Clear the Shelters Day.  While Cody WAS adopted, he was luckier than many other cats. He had an incredible foster Mother who loved and nurtured him, and helped influence the loving cuddle bug that he is today. Millions of other animals aren't as lucky as Cody was. Many are waiting in shelters for days, months, years and even their entire lives, to find their forever homes, and MANY NEVER DO.  While focusing on homeless animals today, it is also a good time to remind everyone that Remember Me Thursday® is right around  the corner! It's time to start preparing!!

SMART: Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team (Guest Post) #BtC4A

When people ask me about my favorite rescue in my feature-length documentary SMART: Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team, they assume the answer’s going to be something big. The deer in Pee-Wee Herman’s backyard? Airlifting the horse from the dam? Surely, the mountain lion in the basement?

The answer, surprisingly enough, is a kitten in a basement.

My team and I spent 3 years in the field with SMART. We lived, breathed and bled with them. But they truly figured out who I was early on, in a house with true Hollywood pedigree. Yes, this rescue could only have occurred in the City of  Los Angeles.

SMART team lead Armando Navarrete was in the attic, his flashlight beam sweeping across insulation and wood. The owners thought the kitten was up there, but although we could hear the little thing, it was nowhere to be found.

I shimmied downstairs and ran outside, making sure I was on the same side of the house Armando was. And then I heard it. The kitten was crying beneath the house, and the sound was racing up the wall to the attic.

I told Armando to come on down, and then I almost went in to grab the kitten. I think that’s when they figured out that I was truly invested in their work. That I got it. Me, leading my small crew, determined to tell their story… and I almost ruined my own shoot to go get that little critter.

Of course the properly trained and incredibly talented Armando Navarrete did his thing and saved the day, and that kitten rescue is an important part of the documentary. But the end of the story hasn’t ever been told before. Until now.

Because in true Hollywood fashion, the owner of the home was in the classic Planet of the Apes. He sprayed down Chuck Heston with a water cannon, in fact. And Planet of the Apes is Armando’s favorite movie from his childhood.

Mind. Blown.

So it wasn’t the dog over the cliff or the 50-foot fall or even the pelican water rescue that stands out to me the most. My favorite rescue is a kitten, alone in the dark, crying out for help so loudly that it sounds like it’s coming from the attic. And the need to go in and get it out, no matter what, running through me.

Movies. Documentaries. LA. It all came together in SMART, and now the film is live on Amazon and more for all to see. I hope you have time to watch and review it, and I hope it galvanizes everyone who sees it to help. To volunteer, to adopt a shelter animal, to have their pets spayed, neutered and microchipped. You know the score.

Because you don’t have to jump out of a helicopter to be an animal rescuer.

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit Earns $25,000 from Petco

Three Detroit-area animal organizations shared $80K from Petco

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) earned $25,000 from Petco Foundation’s Holiday Wishes Campaign, thanks to a beautiful story written by a Dearborn Heights Mom about her one-year old son with down’s syndrome and his love of their adopted cat, Guinness.

Stephanie O’Dell submitted the entry that detailed the love that her four-year-old cat, Guinness, had for her son, Kellen, even when she was first pregnant.  Once he was born, the baby and cat became inseparable.  The cat sleeps with her son every night and is his constant companion.

“My life was full before my son was born,” O’Dell wrote in her story.  “Since he has arrived, I can't tell you how much I love watching their relationship grow and flower. They truly are best friends, and I can't imagine what my son's life would be without Guinness. I look forward to many, many years of my boys spending time together and learning.”

O’Dell was a volunteer at FAMD with her sister, Michelle, for 12 years before her son was born.

“Stephanie is a great example of how families come together around their animals,” said Elaine Greene, executive director, FAMD said. “We see this so often with the 1,700 animals we help get adopted each year.”

The Petco Foundation’s Holiday Wishes campaign, in partnership with Petco, awarded a total of $80,000 to three local Detroit-area animal welfare organizations, including Detroit Bully Corps ($5K), Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit ($25K), and Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan($50K) at the Detroit Petco store.

The three organizations were selected as a winner from more than 5,000 stories that were submitted by animal adopters across the country, which celebrated how their adopted pets have changed and enriched their lives. The Petco Foundation selected more than 50 organizations from the pool of 5,000 submissions as winners.
