Hi all! It's Cody and as many of you know, I was adopted. I did not live in a shelter, I had a foster Mom, but I was adopted just the same!

Mom and I love helping to spread the word about June being Adopt A Shelter Cat Month and when our dear friends at the ASPCA contacted us asking if we would help spread the word about their latest contest, we said OF COURSE!!

The ASPCA as teamed up with Fifth Harmony star Ally Brooke, to help spread the word that in the month of June the shelters are usually bursting with kitties and we all want to see them be adopted!

Cats have always been a huge part of my life. My cats love me in the most beautiful and unconditional way, and now I want to return the favor by encouraging everyone I know to take part in Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. Michigan Summer Adopt-A-Thon to Feature 50 or More Adoptable Pets

In honor of Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month and Adopt-A-Cat-Month we are happy to present to you the first of two large offsite tented Adopt-a-Thons this summer takes place on Saturday, June 18^th  from 10a-4pm in the parking lot in front of Home Depot in Allen Park in the Fairlane Green II shopping mall.  Described locally as “On the Hill”, Home Depot is near the Oakwood boulevard entrance to the mall, just off Southfield freeway.  The Dearborn Animal Shelter plans to have 50 animals or more available for adoption that day including playful kittens, adult cats and all shapes and sizes of dogs.

Attendees will enjoy adoption specials and be able to shop Shelter merchandise.  Adoption counselors will be on hand to help visitors find their new best friend, including a meet and greet area to get to know new dog family members in a separate section. 

Elaine Greene, Executive Director, Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, commented “This Adopt-A-Thon kicks off the summer season for us and is similar to bringing a one day “pop-up” Shelter to a highly visible location for one day.  Each year, we find that prospective adopters really appreciate the opportunity to see so many animals showcased under the tent, in an easily accessible place on a Saturday.  It’s a completely different feel they tell us, than seeing the adoptable animals while in the Shelter”.

This is the fourth year that the event is being hosted in the parking lot of Home Depot in Allen Park.  It will also be the location for this year’s second offsite tented Adopt-A-Thon on Saturday, August 13^th.

Book Review: Memoirs of a Cool Cat as told by Lambert the Cat, Translated by Joy Cool

June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, and to help kick off this special initiative, I am pleased to bring to you, the book, Memoirs of a Cool Cat by Joy Cool.  Memoirs of a Cool Cat is the delightful true-story (well, it is ALL true except for the fact that Lambert, who narrates and wrote this book, really can't talk or write, but that doesn't really matter, now does it?) of life as seen through the feline eyes of one "normal, boisterous, obstreperous (go ahead and look it up, I had to!), boy cat", who was one of a generation of five cats who lived in "Cool Cat Utopia." 

Hearing the title Memoirs of a Cool Cat, for me, conjured up a totally different connotation than what the book is about. I had visions of a sun-glass wearing hep cat, snapping his paws in time with the music, in a sense I could be right. The sagacious Lambert, who narrates Memoirs of a Cool Cat, is not only "cool" because his owner has the last name of "Cool", but Lambert is one special cat in his own right. His sensitive and detailed narration of living life in a multi-cat household with a human, who it is evident WAS a cat in another life, helps to dispel some "nasty cat myths", such as cats not being affectionate.

June Is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month

"June is busting out all over"....the shelters are full to the rafters and are busting at the seams with kittens and cats!!  According to the  ASPCA June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. We agree that that should be the theme every month, but since every Spring an enormous number of kittens are born, we think it is great to raise awareness to please, please adopt a shelter cat! You will never regret that decision, your heart and your home will be over flowing with furry love, that is the BEST gift that you could give  to yourself and others.

I want to remind the folks in Michigan that Kitty City II is having their GRAND OPENING  starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 1 through  5 p.m. on Sunday,  June 3.  Adoption fee of $59 includes spay or neuter, vaccines and health check.   All cats are from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills or Elizabeth Lake Animal Rescue in Waterford.

Kitty City II-White Lake

Kitty City II is identical to the original Kitty City at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills.  Both are free- roaming, cage free adoption centers, designed by Addy Shattuck, that enable kitties waiting for new homes to watch the birds outside through floor-to-ceiling windows, lounge in miniature arm chairs, and enjoy the soft breeze of an overhead ceiling fan.  Shattuck designed each Kitty City with plenty of perches for cats to climb, soft beds for sleeping and concealed litter boxes for privacy.  At any given time, each Kitty City is a temporary home to 20 or more cats.

On Sunday, June 3 customers can bring their cats and dogs to a pet health care fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. that includes free wellness exams and reduced cost vaccines, feline leukemia tests and microchipping provided by Union Lake Veterinary Hospital.  They will also be treated to a free barbecue lunch from noon to 3 p.m.

As a special treat I will be volunteering Sunday, June 3rd starting at 11am and there is a super great rumor that Pam from Pet Blogs United will be joining me! How great will that be? I get to FINALLY meet her in pawson!! I was telling Pam that with both of us living in Michigan it is pitiful that we have to cross the country to meet at BlogPaws! Heck, we live 30 minutes apart for Pete's sake! I am hoping she is there Sunday because it will be great to meet her!

Pet Supplies Plus in White Lake, Michigan is looking for homes for 200 cats & kittens; June 3-5 and FREE pet health exams June 5

Store owner honored for placing more than 4,000 cats

 Pet Supplies Plus of White Lake, Michigan is looking for homes for 200 cats and kittens that will come from Oakland Pet Adoption Center (part of Oakland County Animal Control) for a cat adoption event  Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5.  The store will also host a Pet HealthCare Fair on Sunday, June 5 featuring FREE wellness exams for cats and dogs plus reduced-cost veterinary services including vaccines, microchipping and more.     

Recent economic concerns have resulted in a larger number than usual of pets being surrendered at Oakland County shelters.  Due to the large number of cats and kittens without homes, Pet Supplies Plus is hoping that many of the 200 will get adopted.  

The 200 cats and kittens -- in every color and breed imaginable including purebreds -- are all spayed or neutered, examined by a licensed veterinarian and vaccinated.  Adoption fees of $59 per cat or kitten go to Oakland Pet Adoption Center.    All adopters will get a goody bag for their new pet that includes pet food and toys.    

“We are hoping that all or most of the cats and dogs will find loving homes,” says store owner Addy Shattuck.  “Many of these beautiful animals were someone’s pet that they were unable to keep.   Our adoption event is a great way to meet your new family member and give a loving pet a good home.”   

Shattuck, who owns three Pet Supplies Plus stores in White Lake and Bloomfield Hills, has been putting cats up for adoption in her stores since 1991.  During this time she has found homes for more than 4,000 cats and kittens working with various shelters and rescue groups including Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Twp. Animal Control and others.  Shattuck was recently recognized with an award from Oakland County for her efforts.

The adoption event will be held in a 4,500-square-foot retail space adjacent to Pet Supplies Plus.  Use of the space has been donated by shopping center owner Richard Zoner who also owns Farmer John’s Greenhouse in Farmington Hills.

  

The Pet HealthCare Fair, which will be held inside Pet Supplies Plus will offer FREE wellness exams for dogs and cats as well as low-cost veterinary services including distemper vaccines, rabies vaccines, heartworm vaccines, feline leukemia testing, microchipping and more.  The Pet HealthCare Fair is being run by

Union Lake Veterinary Hospital.  Natural Balance is also a sponsor.
