  1. These are all great reasons to consider pet insurance!
Katie would rather forget it, but we can attest to #8.

  2. While some of these things can't be prevented others can. Looks like it pays to pet proof our houses and take good care of our fur babies.

  3. It's a real shame good pet insurance isn't available here. The last time I checked, it was only applicable to pedigrees AND only up to 7 years of age. What's the use of that?

    1. OMC THAT IS DEPLORABLE!!!! Only available to "pedigrees?" That is simply unreal and inexcusable!

  4. Wow some of those treatments are eye wateringly expensive. Have a terrific Tuesday.

  5. Part of the "package" when you have pets is knowing you're responsible to take care of them TOTALLY - including the expensive medical care they may need at some point. Pet insurance helps of course although I've never looked into it for Sam. Seeing the facts in that chart really makes you realize how important preventive care could be though...good diet and exercise, etc. helps. Thanks for the info!

    1. Pam you are absolutely correct! I didn't have pet insurance for Bobo either, but thankfully he was healthy for 16 of his 18 years.
Now that I have two pets that are the same age, I felt that pet insurance was a necessity.
After featuring Trupanion for 2 years on Cat Chat, I looked into their rates (which are reasonable) and received some wonderful testimonials from other bloggers who had insurance with them, and I took the plunge.
Thankfully I haven't had to use it, but feel a sense of security knowing that I have it.

    1. Believe it or not I actually have it. Ours is with Trupanion (the people who did this infographic)...but YES I pay for ours. It is $60 something per month for us and that is for 2 pets, so it really isn't that bad. I felt that I for sure should have it.

  8. With all of the animals we have and have had we are lucky to be able to say we've only experienced two of those things (knock wood). It's very interesting that the #1 is fever/pneumonia from unknown origin! I would have guessed cancer to be the most expensive, but I guess that anything requiring emergency treatment seems to be.

  9. First thing I did after getting Max..,pet insurance that I hope we will never use! Great post!

  10. Those prices are really high. Guess I am so lucky to have the vet that I have. But then they know how many animals I have so they are nice to me. But the Pet Insurance sounds terrific for those that can afford it. Take care.

    1. those prices are right on target! You ARE lucky, not all vets do that. Pet Insurance is great...for 2 animals mine is only $60 something a month. It may sound like a lot but when it comes time for me to use it I will be grateful that I have it.

  12. This is a great breakdown of costs, because--unlike pretty much every other type of insurance policy--this one is actually easy to understand! (Doesn't hurt that the illustrations are incredibly cute, either... ;) ) Thanks so much for posting this, Caren!!

  13. I always thought I'd be willing to live in poverty for several months if Avalon would need a similar treatment one day (hopefully not), but pet insurance may be a good alternative :)

By the way, I dreamed about you last night. My grandparents invited you over for dinner and you were angry at me because Avalon wasn't there. Weird, I know :)

    1. OMG too funny!!!!! You mean you had a nightmare about me! lol. Well...I WOULD be upset if Avalon wasn't there! lol. So, when am I flying over for dinner?

  16. Don't scare us like that!

You didn't take one cat photo? Well, our mom didn't take any without cats except for Charles the Monarch, and he still had 4 feet! Our mom loved meeting you, you were one of her highlights.

    1. Nope! I don't have ONE cat photo. Not a one!!! Mostly dogs and FOOD lol. YOU were one of my highlights too! Wish we could see each other more often. We would have a BLAST!

  17. Wish we could afford the insurance.

  18. Well, no one said us pets are cheap! But that sure is a lot of $$$. The mom should look into getting us some insurance!

  19. Even my stoopy anal gland abscess turned out to be lots and lots of green papers (well, mostly cause they had to knock me out to examine me since I do not permit intrusions upon my person when I am conscious. In fact, I belong on Wild Kingdom!) The Human may look into insurance though!

  20. Carmine just had dental surgery, so I can definitely attest to how expensive it is!!

Unfortunately, pet insurance, like human medical insurance, doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, so it wouldn't do much to help my Carmine (and Lita's almost a senior already). However, when I get a new cat a long, long, loooong time from now I do plan to get insurance for him or her. I believe if you get insurance when a cat is young, it can serve you well over a cat's lifetime.

    1. I have been reading about poor Carmine and I hope he is doing much better! I know about the darned pre-existing issue...I have the same thing with Cody and his on-going allergies. They were "pre-existing" I agree with you about getting insurance when they are young. That is what I did with Cody and Dakota but unfortunately Cody had his allergies then

  21. This is a great graphic...I have never seen anything like it! Nobody likes thinking about their fur kids getting sick but this really inspires us to investigate the options out there. Knowledge is power.

  22. Goodness make you want to stay in bed. We are happy that Dad is a hooman RN who keeps working to know more about cats and how to keep us healthy.
    Thanks for keeping us informed

  23. It's crazy that the most expensive illness would be something as common as a fever! I would've thought something like cancer would be #1 for sure.
