Festival Of Sleep Day

Hi my furiends!! Here is a day that is right up our alley! Today is Festival Of Sleep Day!  Now for cats, that would be EVERY day, (because cats are smart like that!),  but it is pretty cool that there is a day designated to do what we do best!

History of Festival Of Sleep Day
According to Days of The Year:Nobody is quite sure when this holiday was founded, but it was founded by someone who had a profound and deep love of sleep. Sleep is a basic human function, and helps our bodies to regain energy for the next day, keeping our mind alert and ready for action. Having a lack of sleep can be fatal to the human body and mind.

I think that whomever founded this day HAD to be a cat!! Cats are smart and know how important sleep is, (that is why we average between 16 and 20 hours a day), but humans? That is another story entirely! Many of our humans need to follow our lead and GET MORE SLEEP!

My Mom and my Dad walk around sleep deprived. Ok, most of the cause of Dad's sleep deprivation is due to ME waking him up anywhere from 3:30am to 5am, but if he went to bed earlier it wouldn't happen!! Mom sleeps through anything because she stays up til 2am!

Mom averages about 5 hours of sleep a night, and Dad has the same or less.

There are BAD things that can happen if Humans are sleep deprived:

They can have more auto accidents

A lack of sleep affects how alert a human is, it makes them unable to concentrate and reason well and it affects their problem-solving skills. It also affects their ability to learn and remember.

Most humans need a minimum of 7 hours of sleep a night in order to function at peak. There are many dangerous health affects that happen due to a lack of sleep as well. One of them is it can make you GAIN weight! (Mom learned that in Weight Watchers.) If someone is sleep deprived they are more likely to make bad food choices, (such as reaching for carbs for a quick "high", which also leads to an equally quick crash! It's due to an abnormal spike of sugar). Days of the Year lists other serious health problems that can arise due to a lack of sleep:

• Heart Disease
• Heart Attack
• Heart Failure
• Irregular Heartbeat
• High Blood Pressure
• Stroke
• Diabetes

If you ask me, that's one pretty scary list! If Mom didn't stay up til 2am nearly every night watching late night TV and sometimes reading email, then maybe she wouldn't be so tired! She says that this year she is going to try and get at least six hours of sleep a night. It's not great, but it is better than what she is currently getting.

I say she should follow the lead of cats and sleep wherever and whenever she wants to! (Ok not when she is driving, but whenever she won't endanger herself or others!)  What about your humans kitties? Do they get enough sleep? Could they learn from you?

  1. My human goes to bed late too. She does try to get 7 hours every night, but it's usually closer to six. She is a big fan of naps!

    1. Your human is a smart cookie because they say naps can help quite a bit to make up for some lost sleep. Maybe my Mom will try that herself!! Love, Cody

  4. I would sleep a lot better (as in, through the whole, entire night) if not for the dog & cat in my bed!

  5. My cats are eating right now, but they promise to get back to sleeping as soon as they finish! We could never stay up until 2am! We are early to bed, early to rise around here, but we like it that way. Some folks are that way, and some are night owls...hoot hoot...

  7. It's only right that there is a day in honor of sleep. And I agree that we humans really should take you kitties as good examples and get more sleep ourselves. This here human is for sure guilty of getting too little sleep, which probably has just a little to do with the fact that I am somehow both a night owl and an early bird. Well, happy snoozing to you and yours, Cody!

  10. Sounds like a great idea to have a sleep day. Looks like our Mom needs to sleep any more. Our gifts came from Random Felines and not 15 and meowing. Mom's brain just isn't working at the moment. You all have a wonderful day.

  11. My mum by nature is a night owl and doesn't like mornings. She never went to bed before 2AM until 2 years ago and now she aims to be in bed most nights by midnight. It took a long time to adjust and she would lie awake for hours on end, but now falls asleep within an hour. She still doesn't like mornings but being retired she doesn't have to worry about them now and sometimes doesn't get up until 9AM. I like it when that happens. Extra snuggle time!

  18. After years of insomnia, I've found that 1) must keep the bedroom dark, 2) keep it cool too!, 3) no strenuous exercise right before bed, 4) keep bedtime about the same day after day, 5) keep a notepad nearby, 'cuase if some idea is rolling around in one's head, it prevents sleep! Write it down, and then maybe you'll fall asleep...hahahaha!

  21. Kitties really have the right idea when it comes to sleep. Yes, Festival of Sleep Day is right up their alley. I have experienced insomnia off and of for most of my life. I try to go to bed and get up close to the same time every day. I'm always tired, and naps, as tempting as they can be, are my enemy. If I nap, I'm guaranteed to not sleep at all.

I love this picture of Cody and the quote too!

  22. We like the idea of a Festival of Sleep!
We would be great participants. heehee
Mum is pretty good about getting her sleep.
She says it has to do with getting older and having to get up early for work.
Even us sleeping on the bed does not bother her ;)

She said she would get more sleep if Lily didn't sit and stare at her all night. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  26. Our daddy and Isabella can sleep through anything but I get Mommy up early every morning. Lately I've been waking her up so she can lift the covers for me to get under them. She only gets sleep if she takes a Tylenol PM because then she's much harder to wake up!

  27. A Festival of Sleep sounds perfect to me. I let my humans sleep until I'm hungry. After they feed me they can go back to sleep.

  31. Great idea. Good thing to celebrate.
We cats love to sleep. My humain needs at least 8 hours of sleep. Without it she becomes grumpy.
As I am a nice Lady cat I let her sleep. I (almost) never wake her up during the night.
