It's Art! It's Cats! It's A Book! It's Double Trouble A-Z: The Adventures of Bugsy And Knuckles By Lou Belcher

Welcome to the wacky, whimsical world of Bugsy and Knuckles, better known as Double Trouble, and who are the inspiration for the delightful book:

Many in the cat world know that  Bugsy and Knuckles are kitty brothers, better known as The Boys who get along so well, and are so deeply attached to each other,  that they appear to have some sort of telepathic communication system that only they understand! Most of their antics take place on the blog that they share with "HH" aka Her Highness, who is known to the rest of the world as Lou Belcher, Author of The Zen of Max, and the blog (Before You Write), that she shares with Bugsy, Knuckles and their special friend, Checkers the Mouse.  In addition to being a superb author/free-lance writer, Lou is  also a talented artist.

Many of us have had the unique pleasure of watching her latest book: Double Trouble: The Adventures of Bugsy and Knuckles begin to come to life on her blog! We also have the distinct honor of remembering when Bugsy and Knuckles first came into Lou's life, when she adopted them from the SPCA of North Brevard three and a half years ago.

"He is mellow most of the time
and rarely takes the lead.
Consequently, he doesn't end up
in trouble as often as Knuckles."

"He is full of energy
and is always planning
an assault of some sort.
He usually fails,
consequently, he is the
comic relief in my life."

Bugsy and Knuckles are REAL LIFE brothers! They are litter mates! Where one is, the other is sure to follow. They share a passion for play and their special telepathic communication system allows them to "pull off capers that have earned them the title DOUBLE TROUBLE"

How did the book come to be?
Initially Lou planned to write a story about The Boys and realized that she had enough material for several books (which will follow!). She had a "board meeting" with Bugsy, Knuckles and their mouse friend Checkers, and decided that a cartoon book would be a good place to start!

Who are the characters in the book?
Well, Bugsy and Knuckles of course, and "HH" and as a special treat, The Boys decided that their best friend, Checkers the Mouse should narrate the book!  Checkers normally likes to stay out of the limelight but he said that HH promised him a substantial amount of cheese as payment for narration and he just couldn't refuse!!

Why an alphabet book?
From Lou:The idea for the cartoon book to be structured as an alphabet book came from The Boys wanting to show you all of their favorite things and activities.

In their enthusiasm, the list of what they wanted to show you grew longer and longer. So I gave them the assignment of choosing only four words for each letter of the alphabet, and I promised them we'd build a little glimpse into their lives from that.

Double Trouble is a "book about pictures, NOT reading", which makes it an ideal book to set out on the coffee table, to give as a gift to your humor/cat-loving friends for the holidays, or for ANY time!

I was particularly smitten with Double Trouble for a couple of reasons.

The Drawings Were Done By Hand
I am drawn to, and appreciate art (particularly cartooning, and art that is NOT computer generated). Having grown up with a father who was a famous Editorial Cartoonist, I have an understanding of the time it takes to create a drawing (with one's own HAND). The drawings may have a simplistic look, but achieving simplicity in a cartoon while evoking a response, is a talent that many would love to have, and few possess. Lou's drawings are light and playful and purrfectly capture the mischief making personalities of The Boys.

Non-Traditional Words Are Used For The Alphabet
Which makes Double Trouble a suitable read for ADULTS! It doesn't contain the usual "A is for apple", "H is for Horse", but instead there are words such as Amok, Acrobat, Jam, Jazz, Knickknacks and Octopus. Each word has it's own page with a corresponding witty caption depicting a unique adventure or experience that Bugsy and Knuckles had that involve that word. While children will also enjoy Double Trouble, it is far from being a book that is geared just towards children.

Whether Lou is writing or painting, she LOVES to make people laugh and smile! Another of her passions is cats. Lou succeeds in combining all of her passions in Double Trouble! If you can relate to,  and appreciate the antics of cats, and if you love humor and cartoons, you will find Double Trouble A-Z The Adventures of Bugsy and Knuckles to be the purrfect antidote for a stress-filled day!

AS WITH THE ZEN OF MAX, A PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS FROM DOUBLE TROUBLE WILL GO TO HELPING ANIMALS IN SHELTERS.

Cody On Canvas-Semi "Wordy" Wednesday

The other day I was reading one of my favorite blogs Max The Quilt Cat and was thrilled to read that "HH" who if you didn't already know, happens to be a super talented painter as well as a genius writer, is participating in a 30 Paintings 30 Day Challenge from the Leslie Saeta blog.

HH chose "Cats" as her theme for the challenge, and soon after beginning her paintings she realized that she needed more photos of cats to paint. She posted a request for more cats on her blog and I was all over it!.

There is nothing I love more than original art, I have a deep appreciation for it, and the time it takes to create it, since I draw and come from a family with a heavy artistic influence.

So, I submitted this photo of Cody.

This is one of my favorite photos because it shows the gorgeous green of his eyes.

HH emailed me yesterday with the finished product, and gave me the option of purchasing it at a discounted price. Here is the painting, done in an "impressionistic" style, and I am completely in love with it!!

Thank goodness HH accepts PayPal! I purchased the painting and cannot wait for it to arrive! When it does, I will photograph it again after it is proudly displayed on the wall.

Would you like a painting of YOUR cat done by the incredibly talented HH? All you have to do is email her a jpg photo (close up is best so she can see the eye color of your kitty). Email her at: MaxTheQuiltCat at gmail dot com. You can refer to her blog for more details here.

I am completely in love with this painting of my precious Cody, and I can't wait for it  to arrive!!

The Zen Of Max (a memoir of great wisdom and many naps) by Lou Belcher

There is a special bond between cat lovers and their cats. Nothing like stating the obvious is there? There is an extra special bond between a cat lover and their cat when they are a part of  a single cat household. There IS a difference.

"The Zen Of Max" is a delightful account in an episodic format (thank you dear husband for that most wonderful assessment when you TOO read this wonderful book this weekend.) You provided the perfect word to describe this most entertaining and touching (not in a weepy kind of way) story of the life of a woman (Lou) and her cat (Max) which spanned the entire 17 and a half years that they were together.

By "episodic" we mean that it is the day-to-day events that matter most that you share with  your special pet. Not one monumental event, but the seemingly mundane every day events that become a vital part of your history together.

I love stories like this because they resonate so strongly with me. For the entire 18 yrs of his life my Angel Bobo was also a part of a single cat household and for many of those 18 yrs he and I lived alone.

You experience a different kind of bond when it is just you and a cat than when there are other cats, dogs, humans sharing the "love".

Lou does a delightful job of conveying that special relationship in this book.

"Max" from Max The Quilt Cat
Max was "an ordinary cat who lived to the maximum" and Lou's description of her life with Max is something that ALL cat owners can relate to, whether they live in a single cat household or not!

The story about Max waiting by the window when Lou would return home from work (even on weekends when she was already HOME) made me chuckle because my Bobo used to do the SAME thing and I thought it was oh so unique!

One of my favorite passages of the book is "Max always lived the life of a pampered cat. I could deny him nothing. Without even realizing it, I rearranged my life around him. But he earned that devotion. He gave as much or more than he received, and that's what this book is about. From it, you will learn much if you read all the lines, between the lines and around the lines."

Lou also captures Max's persona (or purrsona whichever you prefer) in a delightful way. To each of us our cats are unique, they do the most amazing things that certainly no other cats could ever do! (in Max's case the lamp episode was something I NEVER heard of a cat doing and I roared with laughter). Lou goes on to say "Max was more "Max" than he was "cat" or "dog" or any other species. He was a Max, and he didn't think of himself as anything else. He WAS. That's all there is to it."

So philosophically stated and I love it.

Each experience/episode/personality trait that Lou tells us about with her life with Max  is peppered with wonderful quotes, all in the form of a "Lesson Learned" (being a self-described quote freak this was another favorite part of the book for me.) Max taught Lou (and will teach the readers of this wonderful book) many, many impawtant lessons!

Some of them are:

"We're all the same. We are all just the ME of ourselves regardless of species."

"Sometimes it's just about the chase and not really about getting away. It doesn't matter where you're going...it's about going and someone caring enough to follow you."

From "The Zen Of Max"
"Appreciate your loved ones while they are with you. Max sure did that. He led by example. He had a special bond with Mom and he instinctively treated her lovingly. It was something to see and experience."

A particular passage in this book, in my opinion, was the most poignant and summed up not only the book but the relationship that I had with my Bobo for the 18 yrs that we shared. It deeply moved me. I apologize that it is long (and I am only including parts) but it touched me so profoundly that I just had to share.

"For 17+ years Max was my best friend. We bonded that first day. And, I soon found that I could tell him anything and he'd keep my confidence. He put up with me when I was down and calmed me when I was upset. He always loved me, but more than that, he truly liked me. That's saying something; because sometimes we love people, but we don't like them very much."

"Max couldn't talk, but he told me in so many ways that he wanted to be with me....I was honored by a true companion. Some days, I know he wore himself out following me around, but he did it because he really wanted to be with me. There weren't many times that I couldn't reach out and touch him. Who wouldn't feel better with a friend like Max?"

"A pet is a commitment for life. I know Max knew that, but I don't think that's why he showed me unconditional love. I think he just loved....Isn't that the ultimate gift?"
