Best Friends Day 2018

Today is National Best Friends Day    It is a day to celebrate your best friend(s) and let them know what they mean to you.

I think the last time I used the term "best friend" was when I was in college. Now, I am blessed to have people in my life that I refer to as "close" friends instead of "best friends." My "best" friends are my "close" friends.

Whether I have known them for decades or days, they all add something to my life that if they were not here, they would be sorely missed.  My "close" friends are small in number, in my opinion, that is as it should be. I don't try to amass close friendships the way people are seeking "likes" on Facebook. True friendships take more time to evolve and grow than Facebook would like us to believe.   I have many "acquaintances", but few who I would consider to be "close friends."

My close friends don't pick my brain and then turn a knife in my back for their own benefit. They don't feign liking me one day, and then have nothing to do with me the next. My close friends aren't "yes" people to me or to anyone else. They care enough to not just tell me what I WANT to hear, but often will tell me what I need to hear, even if it is sometimes painful, as I do for them.

My close friends are friends whose motives I never question, I never question my trust for them. My close friendships just ARE. My communication with them is easy, natural, genuine, Those close friendships are sometimes painfully REAL. I am grateful for those friendships.

If I were to be asked  to pinpoint when those close friendships evolved, in many instances I wouldn't be able to. Many of my closest friendships were unexpected, oftentimes on the surface they would appear to be "unlikely". To me those are some of my favorite and most cherished friendships.

"Unexpected friendships are the BEST ones."

I am grateful for my close friends, and I deeply love each and every one of them.

  2. I have a couple of girlfriends, one from since highschool, and one from college, who I hardly ever see...and we only write to each other a few times a year. When we are privileged to meet up with each other, its like we never had been apart. That to me is 'best friend' material:)

In August I will get together with the friend from my highschool days and we have some outings already planned. It will be wonderful to spend extended time with her.

Friends that can be called close or best are like rare gems. The sparkle and beauty of them does not grow dim or fade.

I am glad you have some good close friends.

Here in 'bloggerland' I have met some wonderful people, and I think if I got to meet them the bond(s) would be strengthened.

    1. Ohhhh I have a TON who "think" they are my friends hehehe............I am the kind that when people meet me they usually gravitate to me, it has always been that way.....I am super selective about who I allow in.....and...if I have, and I find out I was screwed......that's it...I'm done

  4. I like the way you made a distinction to have close friends instead of a best friend. I've mused to myself about the whole "best friend" thing. I like the idea of close friends.
Also, it does my heart good to see the friendship between your two fur kids. Thanks for cheering up my day!

  18. I'm not sure if my best friend is my Mom or my Dad. Since it's "Best Friends" day (plural) I think it's perfect that they both get that title.

  20. We are on the same page here! This post reminds me of a favorite quote from Goethe:
"To know someone here or there with whom you can feel there is understanding in spite of distances or thoughts expressed -- That can make life a garden."

We are not religious but we're praying hard for her. She'll have no one if "Aunt Pauline" doesn't make it.
