Not A Fan Of Daylight Savings Time

This post first appeared on Monday, March 14, 2011. Each year we are blessed with new readers and I thought since MANY of the sentiments I expressed are still valid, it was worth sharing this again! Enjoy!!

I'm tired.

I'm feeling out-of-sorts, cranky and off schedule (yep even being unemployed I DO have a schedule thank you very much!).

I'm TIRED!

I can't concentrate.

I'm T-I-R-E-D!!

Many of us in the U.S. and Canada follow Daylight Savings Time. It was bad enough when the clocks were turned ahead an hour the last week of April,  now the dreaded "spring-ahead-an-hour-and-want-to-scream-at-everyone-around-you-because-you-are-TIRED-event" (for me at least), takes place the second week of March. Couldn't "they" (whoever "they" ARE, leave well enough alone?)

While much of the rest of the country  are  preparing to tip-toe through their Spring tulips and are giggling at the prospect of longer days to come, those of us like myself who already don't get enough sleep, (I am often up til the wee hours of the morning and then I  awaken between 5 and 6am) are seething.

I'm tired.

need my sleep.

Ironically while I am sitting here at 12:20am, which to me is 11:20pm..(mentally changing the time when I look at the clock is a little game I will be playing for at least the next week), all I can hear is the tick, tick, tick of the wall clock in front of me...it's ticking beginning to sound like "Ha...ha...ha... I... got.... you".

I'm TIRED!!

Don't mess with my clock, my routine, my internal alarm, don't mess with my sleep-deprived self!

You are probably asking "what in the heck does ANY of this have to do with cats? Isn't this a CAT BLOG for Pete's sake?"

Don't mess with me.

I told you... I'm TIRED!

I'm feeling out-of-sorts, cranky and off schedule.

"Cats don't like change
 without their consent."

Roger Caras

For the record....neither do I!

Now, if you'll kindly excuse me, I am going to bed. It's 1:15am or 12:15am or whatever it is and I'm TIRED!

  3. I don't really understand why we continue to do this, though I suppose now it's all for bu$ine$$ reasons. However, I actually didn't lose any sleep...I just crawled into bed an hour "earlier," exhausted from the day anyway, and slept for my usual 7-ish hours. LOL. Hope your transition goes smoothly this year, Caren.

  7. The only good thing about spring forward or fall back is on the spring forward morning my cat sis Sophie doesn't wake us up at 4am because it is already 5, but the quiet only lasts 2-3 days. We are not liking losing the hour!

  8. Boy do I know what you mean, even though I am asleep all day! I wish the humans would PICK ONE and just leave it alone!!!!!!

  9. I love daylight savings time. I love having all that time after work to do something like take a walk on the beach and watch the sunset or just be able to see good enough to get in the house without letting Frinkie run out.

  10. When we got up it wasn't daylight and we hadn't saved a thing, I think it's a rip off!

  11. We couldn't agree more!! I am sitting here now, dragging, needing to get my day started, and already an hour behind schedule. Ugh! I will be tired all week too, and back to driving to work in the dark tomorrow, which I hate!

  17. It is a weird concept, to change the clocks rather than just adapt to more natural light in the sky. I don't like change, but I adapt well. Life has taught me to just go with the flow. I try.

    1. love the idea of just adapting to more natural light. CHANGE as a whole, I thrive on. I have had nothing but MAJOR changes to adapt to my entire life and I am tough as nails and roll with the punches......I am also quite happy to venture into the unknown....just don't mess with my clocks lol

  22. We don't do Daylight Savings Time in Arizona because it is dumb.

DST is a Washington solution to a nonexistent problem.

  24. Maybe you are a cat in a human's body, Caren! Sometimes I wonder if I am. I am always sooo tired and sleep about as many hours a day as a cat does, and I don't like anyone messing with my routine, either!

  25. We are not fans of this human idea of changing clocks either!
Now, we have to listen to Mom complaining about the hour she misses :/

  28. I so agree with you Cody. All of us animals do not GET this time change. But we did get our food an hour early according to our schedule. The porch kitties were no where this morning. They didn't have a clue. You all have a good evening.

    1. Funny you mentioned food. I am bugging Mom and it is 4:25. On the old time it is 35 minutes before my meal time!!!!! Dad just got up to feed me and mean mama told him to sit down and wait til 5 which is 4 in the old time.....darned Mom! Love, Cody

  29. My mum has got 3 weeks before she gets cranky. Like you, she doesn't go to bed before 1.30 - 2.00 am. She doesn't like mornings. If the sun isn't shining she says it's too early to get up. She has to drag herself out of bed though to turn the horses out.

    1. Uh oh Flynn you better watch out! lol!!!! Cody just started meowing for food....he is about 40 minutes early on the OLD time! lol. Bet your Mom gets up early like mine too because of the horses. We are both sleep deprived big time! I blame mine on menopause!

  30. We LOVE daylight savings time in the evening but absolutely HATE it in the morning!

  31. The mom says she agrees totally! She hated springing forward today. We pestered her until she got her butt out of bed this morning even though she kept telling us it was an hour early.

    1. well, in fairness I NEVER was until two things: 1) losing my job and working from home (when I worked, I was in bed by midnight at the latest!)
      2) menopause....it has made me sleep waaay less!

  35. I understand. With me I just hate the longer days that seem to drag on and when it gets warm I want to sleep more so it messes with my routine. And then I can't write or do a thing. A lot of people reading my comment probably think I'm a weirdo but I suffer Summer Sad (it does exist). I am very sensitive to light and get depressed with the endless light of summer and I hate this time of year. I long for autumn and long hours of beautiful night all cosy indoors with my beautiful cat :)

  36. Meowmy hates these time changes more fur the work she does than herself...and yes, she too has bleary eyes and a headache and no get up and go...it was stolen in the wee hours yesterday...

In the nursing home where she works, last evening, no one wanted to to to bed at their usual time, because it was still evfur so light. Of course that upsets the whole routine, OMC!
In the fall, while the regular peeps get to sleep a bit longer...(really, they stay up longer instead...LOL), the residents all want to go to bed as soon as they have finished eating supper, what a scramble!

Oh well, at least it is sunny and warmish! Hooray!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ugh, we very much dislike the human time changes. Just stop that silliness, we say!

  38. Caren, our mom actually likes DST, except she is also TIRED and cannot seem to get up in the mornings. She stays up late too and is playing the same game with the clock. We hope both you and our mom get acclimated soon. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo p.s. from Lisbeth:
