Are you feeding your cat treats or poison? #Sponsored #guestpost

Now, we’re not saying you’re intentionally feeding your cat poison here; that would be daft! But how aware are you about what is actually good and bad for your cat to eat? Many of us like to treat our cats to treats from leftovers or even from the dinner table from time to time, but cats are not like us humans – their little stomachs are quite delicate and that food you’re giving them as a treat may actually do more harm than good.

It can be difficult to refuse a meowing cat a little treat every now and again, and some foods are perfectly safe for your little kitty to eat, but pet experts Vet Medic have produced an infographic about cat treats vs poison, listing some of the things we should and should not be giving to our cats.
Set out in an easy to understand format, the infographic may come as somewhat of a surprise to many cat owners who thought that certain foods were perfectly safe for their cats. It also says exactly why these foods may not be good for cats and what could happen were they to eat too much of it.

For example, did you know that eating too much raw fish is not good for your cat? That may be a shock as we know that many cats love fish, but it actually contains thiaminase which can cause neurological conditions, convulsions and even coma in the long-term. Also, did you know that most cats are lactose intolerant and therefore should not have cow’s milk?

The infographic also lists a number of foods that you can give your cat as a treat, again some of which you may not have thought of. Melon, for example, contains fiber, potassium and vitamins A & C, as well as plenty of water which promotes a healthy urinary tract. It’s a really handy little guide that could help your cat live a longer and healthier life.

Vet Medic has a wealth of other information available on the website, including tips on how to reduce stress in vet visits for your cat, signs that your cat may be ill, and information from famous vets that have written for national newspapers and worked on TV.

  2. Never knew about the melon!! Thanks for the very informative post!

PeeEss Mum had to google about prawns and shrimp! They are different anatomically and it would appear prawns are larger generally and found in fresh water, while shrimp is only found in marine setting! Gosh the things you learn!! MOL

    1. I didn't know that about melon either. Cody shows no interest in it, maybe I will introduce him to it this summer.

Thanks for checking about prawns and shrimp! duh! I could have done that too, now couldn't I? lol. Too lazy!!!

I thought prawns were larger but never knew that they were found in fresh water instead of salt water, interesting stuff! Thank you! xoxo

  4. What a great list! Melon is one of the few things that Ashton won't eat, but on Summer's recommendation, she's going to consider tasting it, just once.

  5. Sis Sophie isn't interested in eating much of anything besides her food. Cat bro Bert on the other paw simply steals and eats anything he can find. He doesn't get much human stuff on purpose, but he steals lots of stuff so he may be poisoning himself. Silly cat!

  8. I have my concerns about the information on garlic/chives/onions. Holistic veterinary information that I've found say a cat would have to eat a bushel of the stuff to make the cat sick! Hmmmm...

    1. I have heard differing opinions on that myself, but....I prefer to err on the side of caution. What might not cause harm to one, could cause a severe reaction in another

  11. This is an excellent post on caring for your babies. The same goes for dogs. People tend not to feed them properly either. It doesn't take that much effort to get the facts. Thanks for this most informative post.

Have a terrific day. Scritches to all the babies. ☺

  15. Great post- I am happy to see deli meats are OK in small amounts. I always add a little to Lucy and Snowball's dinner to inspire them to eat.

    1. I would watch that...unless you are using a low salt (or no salt added variety)....deli meat is loaded with salt, can't be good for them

  19. That sounds like an interesting and informative site! It would be easy to err on the harmful side when a kitty is screeching for some human food and his/her person wants to please him/her!! Thanks for the reminder to be informed! :)

  24. That is good information. I didn't know about the raw fish but there is something missing. Egg whites contain something called avidin which interferes with the absorption of the B vitamin biotin, but the yolks are good for them. I have been giving them Stella and Chewy's freeze dried food (without adding water) in small quantities as a treat. They love it.

  25. That's a great infographic. Thank you for sharing! I was kind of hoping to see "lettuce" on there ... because for whatever reason, Moosey LOVES lettuce. You'd think he's a bunny, or something. MOL!
