My Cat Offers 3 Tips On How To Avoid: Take Your Cat To The Vet Day #Cat2VetDay

Hi my furiends!!! It's Cody and as many of you already know, today is *******(Bring or Take) Your Cat to the (dreaded) Vet Day better known as Mom, Dad,  "Dr.Smiley" and his evil assistant get a good laugh day at MY expense!

******* (According to Days of the Year it is "Take Your Cat To The Vet Day",  catvets.com  is referring to it as "Bring Your Cat To the Vet Day" the message is the same!)

This photo is from a previous visit to Dr.Smiley's Evil Laboratory
Just for the record, Dr.Smiley and Gabby
are really NOT evil!!!

Well, this is ONE CAT who is NOT going to the Vet today, and who managed to avoid that sordid experience last Wednesday when I was scheduled, (mind you, the operative word here is "scheduled") to go to the Vet for my annual Rabies shot. (Maybe I need to remind them that I am an INDOOR cat, I AM NOT A DOG!!!!! )

Anyway kitties, if YOU want to avoid a trip to the Vet, let me tell you how I got out of my appointment! You can take these tips and apply them to your own house, or come up with better ones of your own!

TIP #1 BE OBSERVANT!!!

It all started last Tuesday night. I was minding my own business, resting on a chair during the dark and quiet wee hours of the morning trying to drown out the relentless droning of Big Brother After Dark that Mom is obsessed with. My PTU (Personal Transport Unit for those who haven't been blogging long), is always kept in the living room with BOTH doors open. I will often slink into it's cozy, furry, blanket padded depths to get some much needed slumber. That night/morning something unusual happened. The rotund one actually moved off of the couch and closed one of the doors on my PTU. I WAS ON HIGH ALERT!!!! KITTIES! THAT IS A WARNING!! THAT MEANS YOU ARE GOING TO THE VET AND THEY ARE LEAVING ONE DOOR OPEN AT THE TOP SO THEY CAN PUT THROW YOU INTO YOUR PTU AND LOCK YOU IN FOR WHAT FEELS LIKE FOREVER!!!!!! I was beginning to formulate a plan, but didn't want to act prematurely. I  decided to see what else would happen that was out of the ordinary, and if strange things continued, I would spring into action!!

TIP #2 WATCH FOR A CHANGE  IN ROUTINE!!!

Normally, every morning I am on the couch getting MORE much-needed rest, (I am already fed because Dad gets up early to feed Sheltie boy and I while Mom snores away.) Mom usually says good morning to Sheltie Boy and then forgets that I exist. Well, last Wednesday after her usual morning greeting, Mom walked over to me and started petting me and cooing. Then, I heard her start telling Dad, "I hope he stays there, this will be MUCH EASIER." ONCE AGAIN, I WAS ON HIGH ALERT!!!  "THIS WILL BE MUCH EASIER?" I KNEW WHAT THAT MEANT!!!! I strolled into the kitchen and figured if I showed Mom and Dad my ample belleh, (which they LOVE to pet), they would be so overcome with my adorableness that they would be distracted.

More talk followed...Mom said "Oh no!! He's off of the couch! He will soon disappear and I won't find him!!" I WAS OUTTA THERE!!!!!

TIP #3 BEGIN TO PUT YOUR PLAN INTO ACTION

Find the MESSIEST closet or room in the house and GET THERE FAST!!!!!!

Observe the photo above. My hiding spot of choice is in the messy closet that is in Mom's our office, (that she never uses). That white closet door doesn't open properly for humans, which is PURRFECT for me! That pink PTU was Angel Bobo's, (why she got a pink PTU for a male cat is beyond me, but I digress....) and I love to sleep there. When I go there, I feel Angel Bobo's spirit, and I know that  I am SAFE! Mom can't fit her fat-filled arms into that tiny space to get me because the door on the PTU opens TOWARDS her. I can get in, but SHE CAN'T!!!

I waited til I heard Mom say, "I don't feel like, stressing Cody or myself out today, I can't reach him when he is in Bobo's carrier, it's much too hard.   I am going to reschedule his appointment. It's just a shot and it can wait."

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Once I heard Mom on the phone with Dr.Smiley's evil assistants saying something about "being stupid because she forgot to barricade the closet", and I heard something about  rescheduling, I waited til I noticed that  the chauffeur,  Dad,  had left to run errands. Once he was out of the house I knew I was safe!!!! Mom re-scheduled the appointment for the end of August, thankfully, TOTALLY forgetting that August 22nd is (Take or)  Bring Your Cat to the Vet Day! At about 8:30 am (which would have been more than enough time to stuff me into my PTU had Mom not already canceled the appointment), I   nonchalantly strolled out of the closet and went back....WHERE? Why the COUCH of course!!!

YAY FOR ME!!! I AM "VET-FREE" til the end of August!!! Kitties you MUST try these tips yourself!!!!

FROM THE MOM: While Cody DID successfully sabotage a trip to the Vet he is by NO MEANS out of the woods! He WILL be going to the Vet at the end of the month!!! In our house we are firm believers in "wellness visits", (going to the Vet for check-ups when all is fine, and not waiting for an illness or a crisis to present itself), and keeping up with required vaccines.

Wellness visits are important because they can often detect problems that could be cropping up. By catching a potential problem EARLY it can help avoid some costly vet bills! Preventative care is important for humans and it is equally as important for our cats (and dogs!!!)

FROM CODY: Ok, so Dr.Smiley isn't really so bad, he is quite nice really, but I am not thrilled with being called overweight and getting poked, prodded and having a shot, even if I DO know how important it is. So kitties, what have YOU done to escape going to the Vet? Share YOUR tips because I can always use a few new ones!!

Oh and my FINAL tip for today?

KITTIES....WATCH YOUR BACK!!!!!!!!!!

Love, Cody

  1. My human is a master of catching us kitties off guard for vet visits! Seriously, we have no idea what's going on and then suddenly we're scooped up and in the carrier and on our way! She's actually gotten all three cats (back when she had Sparkle) corralled and off to the vet before.

  2. Good job getting out of seeing the vet, Cody!!! No matter how hard we try, the Mom never lets us miss our appointments! Carmine goes every three months for a wellness check and Lita goes every six months. The Mom says wellness visits are important, but we would rather stay at home, MOL! You'll have to try those tips again to get out of your visit later this month!

  3. Unless we are sick we only go the vet for a check up once a year. We hate December!!

  4. Your mom is clearly a very evolved human, because she knew when she was outsmarted by you, Cody! I hope the rescheduled check up goes smoothly for everyone.

    1. Mom thanks you! She loved the "very evolved human".....yep she knew she was outsmarted! Mom told me not to be so cocky, that I only get one "get out of jail free card" MOL MOL MOL!!!! She says I HAVE to go next week! Thanks for the good vet wishes!

  5. Wow, Cody, way to outsmart your human! We are in transition to a new all-feline vet, which is a lot stressful when we get there, but the whole getting us into the carrier thing (especially Ashton) is still almost as much of an adventure as it is with you. We hope your rescheduled checkup is an eventful one for both of you, Cody.

  6. Cat bro Bert is just plain weird. Going to the vet every year is like the high point of the year for him. He loves it there so much and he never wants to go home. No fear at all even though he's had surgery, shots, etc. He doesn't mind a bit!

    1. Shhh don't tell but Cody is a lot like Bert. He doesn't mind the car ride there, he really DOES like Dr.Smiley....."creative license" hehehe

  9. Thanks for the advice, Cody. I will keep all that in mind when I suspect mom is planning a vet trip for me!

  10. Those are excellent tips, Cody. We hope you manage to evade your mom again. Heh heh.

  11. Cody! That is excellent advice! However, the mom has wised up to some of this. I used to head under the bed whenever the mom put her shoes on...no matter what. Now when there's a vet visit in my immediate future, the mom closes the bedroom door so I can't go under the bed. And then I have no where to hide! ~Ernie

  14. We go to the vet every year for a wellness check! Unfortunately, we've all also been to the vet far too often for other issues this year. :( Merlin is crazy - he loves going to the vet and getting attention from everyone there! If they distract him with Cheez Whiz, he doesn't even notice when he gets his vaccinations! Crazy guy.

  15. I know your mom takes good care of you and it's a good thing. Only the vet really knows what kind of shape you're in. Good for you and now to the diet.

I linked this post to Awww Mondays.

Have a purrfect day Cody. My best to your wonderful mom. ♥♥♥

  18. Excellent advice. I won't go in my carrier for any reason. When I hear my Momma closing all the doors to the bedrooms (where my hiding spots are), I know I'm screwed! Doesn't mean I won't fight or make her chase me - but I'm at least partially comforted when she's out of breath and huffing and puffing :)

  21. Loved your post, Cody. I related so much.

I didn't like the last vet I saw. He only had £ signs in his eyes. Mum says it's important to have my yearly check and booster so she may try and take me to the vet she took me to before.

  24. OMC, Cody, you are so clever! But your mom sounds pretty determined to get you to the vet eventually. Your vet and the vet tech look very nice, by the way. And thank you for the reminder that it is important for cats to have wellness checks.

    1. Thank you!! Yep, sadly, Mom is quite determined!!! Yes, my Vet and the Vet techs (all of them!) are wonderful! I really don't mind "Dr.Smiley" at all, contrary to what my face looks like in that photo MOL!!! You are most welcome too! Thank you!

  25. Cody, you are a master! One of our cats gets in the PTU willingly but cries when we shut the door; our other cat will have nothing to do with the PTU & becomes quite an acrobat when we try to get him in it. I hope he doesn't read this post before his next scheduled vet visit!

    1. Thank you!!!!!! Mom said you should get one of those top and front opening carriers like I have. I used to be an "acrobat" too. Now with the top opening one she just plops me right in!!! It's MUCH easier!

  30. Next month will be a year for Mudpie's wellness visit so we'll be going through the same ordeal. Cody, I just love your unique take on today's so-called "holiday"! (I hate to tell you though, you didn't buy yourself much time because there aren't many days left to August!)

  33. ha ha - I head for UTB. Since my peeps are old and senile, they can't get on the floor to fish me out. I really have to be on my toes tho - and this last time I wasn't. I got nabbed and off I went for a check-up too. My peeps are also firm believers in a wellness check once a year even if you are feeling good. Good luck next time buddy!

  34. Totally brilliant post, Cody. I can always tell cos I can sense the peeps nervousness. Also Pop never takes off from work and if he's home, I'm in trouble. I kind of like my vet. Her hubby loves my blog and shares my FB posts. However, that doesn't mean I make it easy for the peeps to take me. This year when I got my wellness exam, I was laying on the kitchen chair near Pop. He was plotting how easy it would be to catch me. Then TW went and sprayed some Feliway in my PTU. I was out of there in a shot and Pop was SCREAMING at TW that he took the day off for nothing. MOL!

  37. This is where I got the diet thing from. FROM CODY: Ok, so Dr.Smiley isn't really so bad, he is quite nice really, but I am not thrilled with being called overweight and getting poked, prodded and having a shot, even if I DO know how important it is.

I shouldn't have just assumed a diet was next.

  39. Too, too funny, Cody! It's too bad that humans are bigger than cats though...

  40. My kitties don't need any help to get out of going to the vet. Once I bring the cage up from the garage, they scatter.

  41. you did a real nice job Cody..
I cannot do the same. My human always takes the "rendez vous" with the vet at 3pm. It means that we have to leave a little after 2:30 pm. It's nap time for me. I sleep on Nat à Chat's bed. So easy to catch me. Poor me.

  44. OMC!! We didn't know about this day...and now we have ammunition to avoid our visit(s)...MOL! Minko is fantastic at finding his new best hiding place on days I need him to go in the PTU...Pipo, um...well he has a lot to learn. The petcretary has learned to put in Minko furst, else he knows what's up and is *gone*.
The way the petcretary got him to come out of hiding once, was to get out the dreaded vacuum...that spooked Minko so she saw where he went to so she could 'retrieve' him. Pipo lokes to splay his pwas so he doesn't fit into any size of PTU, MOL! When they are done at the vet its funny how eager they are to get back into that little jail! In fact we have to keep the doors closed while they are at the vet so they don't go back in too soon...too funny!

(By the way our vet now puts towels sprayed with feliway on all laps or carriers as soon as they enter the waiting room, and it really works well.)
