Groundhog Day:Hey Mr.Groundhog! When is WINTER Gonna Start?

I have always had an issue with Ground Hog Day which is celebrated in the U.S. and Canada.  Supposedly, if the groundhog emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow, that means there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, then we will have an early Spring.

Here in Southeastern Michigan we haven't had much of a winter. Sure, we have had frigid temps but nothing like the norm. Snow? "Fuget about it!" we have barely had any. I find myself WISHING it would snow so that it feels like WINTER! My fear this year, is that we will have BLIZZARDS IN JUNE!!

Why do I have an issue with Groundhog Day?
Because Spring begins March 20th (some years it  begins on  March 21st),  if you do the math, that is SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER regardless (slightly more).  Then, depending on where you live, Spring NEVER starts until after April 14th, (in the Midwest we have had a number of significant snowstorms the first week of April!)...thus making Groundhog Day and the skewed opinion of the Groundhog useless.

  3. Ha! We echo your thoughts about groundhog day and think Cody would be a much more accurate predictor of spring's arrival, of course!

  4. Cody you make a great groundcat or cathog or WHATEVER! You can probably predict the coming of Spring better than anyone else can - GO FOR IT!

    Love, Sammy

  5. MOL....At this point, we'd rather just not bother with winter anymore. We hope you can REALLY bring an early spring, Cody!

  6. You're so smart Cody. Yes you are. I agree that there are six more weeks of winter even though you didn't have any snow this year.

Have a purrfect day. My best to your wonderful mom. ♥♥♥

  7. Oh yeah, I love this suggestion! The only really great part about this time of year, is that my b'day is usually the official first day of Spring, and that's a great day in my book!

  10. Poor groundhog. We put too much pressure on him! :-) We haven't had a lot of cold weather here in Virginia either. But we did get one good snowfall. Abbey and Natasha loved watching the snow fall from inside the house.

  11. It has been a very weird winter here! I agree with you, it is very suspicious. I am just waiting to hear that we are going to have some freakishly late winter storm. I hope that you have a happy Ground Hog's Day anyway! :)

  13. It has been snowing since Mommy woke up this morning. The little shopping center is a mile away. We can't see it! If the groundhog was here he/she wouldn't even bother coming out in the first place!

  14. Up here in the hills of SD we've had some hefty blizzards in May. Actually throgh all the years there has been snow every month of the year! Sneaky Pie and Mushu are ready for Spring though.

  15. We so agree with you. Spring will get here when it gets here.No matter what the ground hog says. It is nice to hope for an early Spring.

  16. Such a cute cathog!!! I would trust your prediction far more than an old fat groundhog who lives in the ground!!!

  17. Oh Cody... We miss the words MOL ! Purrs

  18. We always end up with 6 more weeks of winter anyway even if the groundhog says an early spring. That stuff might work down south, but it sure doesn't work in the northern states!!

  22. We can't believe the humans rely on a rodent to predict the weather. Sheesh.

  23. Cats are very honest, and SMART. So we agree ... Cody would make a great (and handsome) prognosticator!

  24. Hi Cody and your human, Caren,

Ah yes, Ground Hog Day, that reminds me of a certain movie. Ah yes, Ground Hog Day, that reminds me of a certain movie. Ah yes, Ground Hog Day, that reminds me of a certain movie.

Happy CatHog Day and to better weather pawdictions! We are going to have a "Hedgehog Day", over here in the UK.

  26. Cody, you are way cuter than a groundhog and more accurate too.

  27. Not only that, Cody, but there are multiple groundhogs supposedly predicting weather/seasons in many places. How are they going to connect ad get it right??

You know all the rain we are having today?? Meowmy is furry happy...because it in *not* snow...no shovel needed, maybe an ark, but no shovel, MOL!

    1. And...growlmy said you better go hide in your den, Cody-Chuck, cause dog-guy does not like those varmints at all...just saying, Though meowmy said you are a more intelligent looking 'groundhog' than the woodchucks around here...

    2. Sheesh, meowmy is so confused today...just like a woodchuck out if his den at the wrong time...in this blog there is no growlmy just meowmy.MOL!!

  31. We don't like ground hog day, either. Our stupid mayor dropped the ground hog last year.
