June is Adopt-A-Cat-Month-American Humane

Believe it or not, Cody was the FIRST cat that I adopted. My Angel Bobo was found as a stray, and gifted me with 18 glorious years. Here is the letter I wrote to Cody on his Gotcha Day in 2012 where I have been grateful EVERY DAY for having adopted him:

I want to thank you my precious Cody for helping to heal a heart that was broken. The day I found you at the PetCo adoption drive, my heart was hurting from having  to say goodbye to your Grandpa Bobo just two weeks earlier.

I thought maybe it was too soon for another cat.  That is, until I picked you up and you immediately curled yourself up against me, never making any attempt to move, I felt your heart taking over mine, I knew you were sent from the Heavens.

I can see why your first name was Prince, your Dad frequently reminds me of how I should never have changed it. You truly ARE our "Prince."

You entered your Dad's and my home when you were about 11 wks old.  You had such kitty swagger! You never hid, you strolled through our home with an air of ownership. You had the cutest little pot belly and a sturdy, solid frame. Such a  rough-and-tumble boy kitty you were! As a handsome mancat, you still are.

Cody was sooo small
nestled between these books!!

Your Dad and I would laugh when you would turn and look at us with the most inquisitive, intense stare, your eyes literally appeared to look through us, you never averted your gaze. We could tell you possessed the wisdom of the ages with that look, it is a look you frequently give us to this day.

Cody about 10 or so weeks old

You are patient, yet determined, tolerant, but no pushover, fearless and loving.

Thank you for the love, laughs and light that you bring to my world, your Dad's and of course your best friend's, Dakota.

As I used to say to Grandpa Bobo, "you MUST stay with Mama til you are at least 24!"

Thank you  for being the incredible kitty that you are, my special boy, I adore you.

Love, "Mom"

If you have been contemplating getting a cat, please consider ADOPTION first, (I have a Petfinder widget on the sidebar of my blog that has been there for the past few years which can help you find the purrfect cat for you.)  Petfinder has a list of Animal Welfare Organizations where you can find a shelter near you! Mom had to make that photo in B&W because she had no flash back when she took it and it wouldn't reproduce well. Thanks so much!

  7. Love Cody's adoption story!
All of us were picked up as strays but Mommy considers that as "adoption" from the streets. :)

  19. The only way our mom has ever healed from losing one of our meowmates is by giving a home to another kitty. She says that she has nine heart-shaped holes in her heart but that the eight of us keep her breathing and moving forward each day. She says all the past kitties are always with her. She thinks and dreams about them all the time. Thanks from Mom. She says this was a great post. Purrs and hugs from the kitties at The Cat on My Head, Lily Olivia, Misty May, Mauricio, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette. 26. Amazingly, Jen has never adopted a cat. Every cat she's ever shared her home with was a stray. And there have been plenty of 'em.

  29. What a beautiful letter. It almost teared me up. MOL! When the peeps had the house, they never dreamed they'd adopt a cat at a shelter cos they had their pick of strays. It would be cruel to adopt and not give one of the strays a home. Cody was a really cute kitten. TW wishes she could've held me as a kitten cos she sure as heck can't hold me now.

  30. Aw, Cody, look how little you were! Now you're a big, handsome mancat! We sure loved that letter ... it's quite a tribute to a special kitty. We think every month should be Adop-a-Cat month. :)

  31. What a sweet letter to Cody! We love how little kittens have a big swagger, like they are invincible. The Baltimore Humane Society has set a goal of finding homes for 500 cats this month. They made their goal last year, so we have high hopes for this year too.

  32. That's so cute. Cody is still as cute as when he was a kitten. :)
