Pet Product: The Auto-close Pet Gate from Primetime Petz Keeps the Doggy Out!!

Our home is a "bi-petual" household. We have a cat and a dog.  Throughout most of my adult life I only had cats,  when we added Dakota to our family I was faced with a few dilemmas.

Our cat, Cody, was here first. He arrived three months before Dakota, his feeding spot was all set, his toys, cat litter, etc. all had their assigned spots.

One of the dilemmas I was faced with was what will I do if Dakota and Cody do not get along? It was important to me to provide a safe haven for Cody  where he could escape to for peace and quiet.

Yet another possible problem was I read horror stories about pet owners not being aware that small cat toys that can  easily be  ingested by a dog, can cause MAJOR problems requiring surgery, and may even cause death. I KNEW that I had to keep Cody's toys AWAY from Dakota!

Dogs are also drawn to cat litter (and the "treats" that are in the box). Under no circumstances should either be ingested.

It was a no-brainer that we had to have baby gates. I searched everywhere for a gate that was practical, the perfect height, that was well-made and would suit our needs. Sadly, this is what we had to settle with for MANY years.

I had three of these. They are BEYOND ugly. They served their purpose but accumulated every bit of filth known to man (and beast). When guests came over I had a nightmare. Some were able to climb over the gate, others couldn't, so I would be forced to remove it. Putting it back up when the guests would leave wasn't fun, and often the gate wasn't secure.

Then there was the laundry! The gate in the above photo is right by our washer and dryer. I cannot begin to tell you the "fun" I would have, a mountain of laundry in my arms, trying to climb over an awkward baby gate. I am lucky I didn't fall flat on my face. To say it was annoying is a complete understatement!

Last year I was reading one of my favorite websites, Hauspanther,  written by founder Kate Benjamin, and saw a most beautiful and artsy gate that was made by Primetime Petz. I loved it! I have known Kate for many years,  through her website, through her work with Jackson Galaxy, the Cat Lounge at BlogPaws,  as well as her Hauspanther Collection which debuted on Primetime Petz last year. I left a comment and was ecstatic when Kate contacted me asking if I would like to review one of the Primetime Petz pet gates.

Kate had me measure the opening in our hallway where I wanted the gate to be. Unfortunately, the original gate that I had my eye on wouldn't work, but Kate mentioned that the Primetime Petz new Auto-close Pet Gate would more than likely be perfect for our hallway.

Our hallway is wider than the above gate, but thankfully the Auto-close Pet Gate comes with 2 frame extensions that only are used if needed.

I also think it allows nosy Dakota to better see what is taking place in "Cat Land" where cat poop, cat litter and tiny toys reside. A mysterious place that he is not permitted to enter!

INSTALLATION:

Now this is where we experienced a SLIGHT (and I mean SLIGHT hiccup). I am not the person who installed the gate, nor was my husband. Neither of us are handy, so I enlisted the help of a dear friend who IS handy. I will NOT lie. When she first attempted to put the gate together she couldn't figure it out. I called Primetime Petz to tell them about our confusion.  I am actually ecstatic that this happened because the help I received was SUPERB! The person I spoke to, went above and beyond. She emailed me step-by-step instructions that were crystal clear. (I did suggest that they have a video on their website that would better show how to install the gate because the directions included with the gate upon delivery ARE confusing, and she said they are working on that!). My friend was able to put the gate up and have it working in a half hour or so.

I could NOT be happier with this gate!!! Doing laundry is a BREEZE.....I am ecstatic that I can open the door of the gate and step right through without worrying that I am going to fall. It is attractive and well-made. It is slightly taller than our previous gate.  I was a little bit worried that Cody wouldn't be able to jump over it easily. I worried for nothing. Cody hesitated one or two times, then the same day, I heard/saw him jumping over the gate like a champ (and he is almost 10 years old).

Did I mention that it is also darned attractive to look at? I am in love with the color and construction. When guests come over, the gate no longer has to be taken down, they can walk right through!!!

Tortitude:The BIG Book of Cats with a BIG Attitude by Ingrid King (Give-Away!)

When a copy of Tortitude:The BIG Book of Cats with a BIG Attitude by Ingrid King arrived at my home a few weeks ago, I was in complete shock,  I was honored, AND I was, (and am!) just a tad nervous!!!

Why? I do not live with, nor have I EVER lived with a tortoiseshell cat!  My immediate thought was "How am I qualified to review a book about tortoiseshell cats when I have never lived with one?"  I know of other bloggers who are far more knowledgeable about torties than I am, but I took comfort in the fact that since I had reviewed ALL of Ingrid King's books prior to this one, that she must have confidence that I will write at least a somewhat intelligent review of:

My first impression after merely LOOKING at the cover of Tortitude, was that it was GORGEOUS! I am one of "those people" who gets a thrill out of simply  touching a book and gazing at the cover, I become filled with anticipation of what awaits me inside, which is why I am NOT a fan of ebooks, but I digress....

When I turned the first page,  I smiled when I saw a quote by one of my favorite "Cat Daddies", Jackson Galaxy:

Once I began to calm down and think, it dawned on me,  that if I , one of millions of cat lovers, knows little about tortoiseshell cats, surely there has to be many, many more cat lovers who might not be familiar with these wonderful cats!

Thinking back, to when I first began blogging in 2009, discovering Ingrid's blog was probably my FIRST exposure to torties, and from that day on, I always considered Ingrid to not only be one of a number of cat experts that I hold in high esteem, but to me, she is a MUST READ not only for misc. trusted information about cats, but for  personal and engaging stories about tortoiseshell cats in particular.

When I read the above passage on the back cover, I was not only intrigued, but I began to think that if I were a cat, there is a better-than-average chance that I would be a tortie!!! I am "strong-willed, a bit hot-tempered (No!! Really? Ha!), fiercely independent, feisty and unpredictable." I have also been known to be very possessive of my humans!! But once again, I digress...

That quote made me stop and think. I find it interesting that the HUMANS that I know that live with torties tend to have personalities that are the polar opposite of torties! Could it be a case of "opposites attract" or, could it be that these spunky cats have personality traits that their owners secretly wish that THEY as humans possessed, and that they live vicariously through their torties?
I think I may be on to something here!!!

"What is Tortitude?"

Author King points out the colors/patterns and personality traits  that make a cat qualify as a tortie, she also mentions:"while there are some commonalities between torties when it comes to personality, there seem to be wide variations in the degree of tortitude and in how it is expressed. Some cats appear to have read the book on tortitude, displaying all of the traits attributed to cats with this coloring. Others may vary in temperament, and only demonstrate certain aspects of it. There is even a chapter titled "Let's talk about litter boxes" and in this chapter you will find info such as where to put the litterbox, how many boxes you should have, types of litter boxes and I was thrilled to read that like me, Jackson DOES NOT LIKE AUTOMATIC SELF-CLEANING LITTER BOXES. Why? because "monitoring your cat's waste is a crucial part of parenting." You will not be alerted to a possible health problem with an automatic self-cleaning box. I agree with Jackson when he says "on a more personal, pet peeve level-I don't like them because they are just a symbol of lazy guardianship. Spend a few minutes a day and SCOOP THE BOX."

Kate's Pro Tip in this chapter :Easy Litter Catcher----she suggests using perforated decking tiles that can be bought from flooring supply stores or online, and they come in a wide variety of colors. All you have to do is vacuum up the litter that falls under the tiles, and if necessary wash in the sink or with a hose. Brilliant!!

Catify to Satisfy is Superb!!!

I didn't think it would be possible but Catify To Satisfy has surpassed by leaps and cat superhighways the first book, Catification. Catify to Satisfy has information that is beneficial to every type of cat owner from the owner who just acquired his/her first cat, to the life-long cat owner who has had multiple cats for years. It is 240-something pages long and is printed on high quality paper. It is just gorgeous!

The photos are incredible, there is so much information that I must sit down and read it again and again. It is the kind of resource that won't be left on a shelf collecting dust, this should be kept out so that you can make periodic checks of your environment and make adjustments when necessary/needed or just to be creative!

IMPORTANT!  Cody and I want to make sure everyone knows that they need BOTH books!

The second book doesn't replace the first. All of the important concepts are introduced in the first book, and then are expanded and built upon in the second!! Think of it as your own "Catification" resource center!! Right at the tip of your paws!!
