Our 6th Blogoversary and a FroliCat™ RoloRat Give-Away!!!

Today is a special day for us! Well, frankly YESTERDAY was a special day for Cody and I because six years ago yesterday we published our FIRST blog post!  To say we had no clue as to what we were doing is an understatement of epic proportions!  Sometimes we STILL have no clue as to what we are doing, but here we are approximately 1474 posts later, with friends all over the world. Who'd a thunk it? Certainly not us!

The past six years have flown by, and  have given us laughs, learning, lovely new friends, many new experiences, lessons learned and valued partnerships both past and present.  Yes, for a bevy of reasons there were even  sometimes tears, and heartache,  but we wouldn't trade any of it, or any of YOU for the world!

Cody and I DEEPLY THANK YOU for taking  the time to visit our blog! It is an honor that we do not take for granted. We wouldn't be able to do whatever it is we do, without YOU! THANK YOU!

Oh My Cat we would be remiss if we didn't thank The Oakland Press!, and particularly Glenn Gilbert. This blog came about as a result of attending one of their Citizen Journalist workshops, I knew I wasn't cut out to be a Citizen Journalist, but I asked them if they needed any bloggers and they told me to shoot them some ideas....Cat Chat (the name of this blog at that time), was one of three ideas that I submitted and they accepted it. They provided a link for the first few years, then I moved off on my own. Today, I am  one of  100s of Oakland Press bloggers, but at that time there were less than 50 of us! A HUGE thank you to The Oakland Press!

In honor of our Blogoversary our dear elf friend is allowing us to have a give-away for one of their newest cat toys,  The FroliCat™ RoloRat  !

Only available at Bed, Bath & Beyond,  (it retails for $19.99).  The FroliCat™ RoloRat is an exciting, rolling toy that encourages your cat to hunt and stalk.

The  RoloRat has crazy red eyes and a long tail that whips around to entice your cat to chase and pounce. This crazy rat even makes fun sounds that will let cats know he’s on the move.

The unit automatically turns off after 10-15 minutes,  it even has a  "Play While You Are Away" mode that allows cats to play even when you¹re not there. We haven't tried that yet, because I think that Dakota would lose his mind!

Cody's Opinion?

Cody is STILL trying to figure out what he thinks of this one! This rat is HUGE...it measures 4-1/2" L x 3" W x 3" H.  Cody is a pretty fearless cat, but this guy DID give him a run for his kibble!!!  Cody DID attempt to bat it, but ONLY when it was idle and when the possessed-looking red eyes stopped flashing.  See for yourself in this short video: (Please forgive the poor video quality, I had to use my zoom and when I do this, the video doesn't record quite as clearly).

My Opinion?
I am a little mixed about this one as well. Don't get me wrong, I think it is HILARIOUS, but the sound almost sounds like a dentist's drill.  At  first I thought it would be better if the RoloRat moved in a straight line, but the more I think about it, I think it is even funnier that it wobbles around the way that it does. I also love how it has a mind of its own!!! It covers a large area and it seems to know just exactly where the cat is so that it can annoy the cat even more! I also loved the feel of the rubber tail...I picked it up and swung it around by the tail which gave ME great amusement! Cody and I are huge fans of the FroliCat line, (we have reviewed a number of their toys), and while this one might be a little daunting to Cody, I feel he will get used to it! I think that it would be hilarious to see this rat in action with those of you who have more than one cat. I think the actions/reactions would be extra hilarious!

You can find out for yourself just how entertaining this would be, because we are having a:

GIVE-AWAY!!!
THREE lucky readers who are 18 and over and reside in the U.S., (our apologies to our International readers, BUT...if a U.S. reader wants to enter and ship their prize if they win to someone else outside of the U.S., that's totally up to them!),

  2. Congratulations and Happy Blogoversary!!!

We love you just the way you are! But we understand it can be fun to change things up every now and then. We'd love to read posts about human/lifestyle stuff too! Just as long as there's still plenty of CAT. ; ) Because we're short on time and don't often have time to read books ourselves, so we're probably a little less excited about book reviews. We enjoy all the other stuff more.

purrs and kitty kisses to you!

    1. Thanks so much Katie, Waffles and Glogirly!!!!!!! I deeply appreciate your input and I REALLY appreciate your candor/honesty about the book reviews. Because I am short on time "and don't often have time to read myself", I am considering ending them in 2016.......and....(and some people are going to be rather taken aback by this)....I will no longer be doing them for free as of 2016...(GASP!!) Authors don't get free reviews anywhere other than on blogs (and a few websites) and they are so time consuming and the readership tends to be so low on book reviews (not just on my blog but on other blogs where I see book reviews) that they aren't worth my time. Can't begin to tell you how many weekends I have "lost" due to having to read/review books.........time is too short to not receive compensation for the time spent reading a book/writing a review. Since this is my "job"....if I am not compensated for book reviews in 2016 they will more than likely be going by the wayside.
      Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I think that is kind of a strange mousie too but I entered anyway. I tend to only comment on cat blog posts, so if you decide to do more lifestyle posts don't think my human and I are ignoring those - we'll still be reading them!

    1. It is strange, but I think the fact that it IS strange, makes it cute! I respect and appreciate your comment and input and I thank you!!!! I think with all blogs, not every post that a person does interests everyone.........sometimes I don't comment on some blog posts every day due to the time factor (I just can't comment on everyone's blogs every day), and sometimes the topic that day either just doesn't interest me, or I am tired of seeing certain things. That's why there is chocolate and vanilla! I never expect to have someone read every single one of my posts (or anyone elses), because if we are being honest.......nobody writes anything anywhere in the world that is that great every single day or every single post. :) Thanks so much for the input!

  4. Happy blogaversary! I think adding some lifestyle posts would be fun - but I'd say keep it at least 50% cat-focused.

  7. OMC, Scylla might actually get some exercise playing with that. She likes things that move. And can you imagine the Yoga Kittens with it. Yang is fearless so we are sure he would love it, and like Cody with think Yin would warm up to it.

Congrats on 6 years of blogging. We kinda like your blog the way it is, but wouldn't object to some life style post.

  8. HAPPY BLOGAVERSARY!!!! WOW.......six years. Amazing and you deserve a BIG congratulations for that. Not easy blogging every day we know. We think your blog is PERFECT.....we love the book reviews, the giveaways, the information about what's going on in the world of pets, the opinions, the "boos" and "Yays" of events you attend. Wouldn't change a thing.....................just don't STOP!

We don't feel that posting seven days is necessary for any blog, but that's just our opinion! Thank you! Love back at ya.

Cody definitely seems curious about the toy, but unsure, too. If we win, I'll have to take a video for you. It would be interesting to see how Lita would react - some toys scare her - others entice her, and it's not always obvious which ones will get a certain reaction. I'm sure Carmine would be rather curious about it!

Happy 6th Blogoversary to you! We are so blessed to have you as a friend in our lives. <3

    1. Thanks so much for your input Judi! It is much appreciated! While that suggestion is good in theory, the changes I have been pondering would involve a complete revamp........so......I'm either "all in" ....or.........to do more of what you are suggesting....maybe I could add a page or two to the blog and see how that goes before a total revamp.......not sure if that would work though because for what I am thinking, it would look out of place. We will see. I may end up leaving it alone. Thanks so much!

  35. Happy Blogiversary!! 6 years is awesome! But I can see where after that time you might want to do some things a little differently. I would still read lifestyle/cooking, etc. We are fans and would follow no matter what you do (but prefer a lot of pet stuff!).
Honestly, Caren, I don't know how you do two blogs. Have you ever considering combining Cody and Dakota's? I'm not saying you should, it was just a thought that came into my head!
I don't have a lot of time to read, so the book reviews aren't as interesting to me either (I wish I had more...but I just have books piling up now!). Just one blog hogs all my time!
We wish you luck with whatever you decide, and look forward to seeing what direction you decide to go in!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks so much Jan!!! That is so sweet of you! If I were to change the direction a bit, rest assured there would be a pet component as well.........I am doubting my idea would work due to my blog link........but if it were to work it would be a combination of dogs/cats (probably) along with other things.
Originally Dakota did sometimes make an appearance here before he had his own blog, then I was talked into starting a blog for him (against my better judgement lol).....from the standpoint of working with brands having two is better than one (due to blackouts and such).....but the amount of work is much, much worse.
I am hearing more and more that the book reviews are not interesting, so there is a super strong likelihood they are going to go by the wayside....(unless I am paid. I will no longer be doing book reviews free in 2016 for anyone if they are to continue). They are much too time consuming and I have given up far too many weekends over the past six years.
Thank you so much! There is a chance that NOTHING will happen differently here (other than with the book reviews), so we will see!!!! Thanks so much for your input!!!

      Delete
    2. I still do occasional book reviews, if it's a book I really, really want to read, or an author friend (like Jackie). But I think you are wise to just ask for compensation. I think giveaways sometimes help get them read more, but the ones I've done definitely don't do as well as other posts, and you are SO right about how much time they take up!

      Delete
    3. Janet OMG I have been doing them for the entire 6 years on BOTH blogs. Enough is enough. Jackie is a friend of mine too...love her and I have reviewed all of her books on Dakota's blog. Having to do them on both blogs is just beyond time consuming. I have a stack to review from now to the end of the year that you wouldn't believe lol. I also make it a point to at least try and have a give-away on all of them. The past few give-aways on Dakota's for books have done so ridiculously poorly that it did nothing but anger me. That's when it is time to end them. People don't realize they can enter to win a children's book and donate it to a school or a library, etc. Trust me I am not going to charge a ton for reviews (under $100 mostly...the most common would be $25-$50).........probably no one will pay and if that is the case, so be it. Bloggers would be a flat $25 rate.

  36. Whoa! Concats on the Blogoversary. I have a question about the Frolicat mouse. Are those red eyes lasers? I see them shining in Cody’s eyes and was wondering. I love your blog, Caren and Cody, but don’t have time to read books and book reviews. The reviews I have read though are excellent. TW was just talking last night about making me review human products or wishing she had time to blog for herself so she could get more “Useful” items free. Can you believe she doesn’t consider MY stuff useful? Best of luck any way you decide to go. We’ll be here.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks CK! Not sure if they are lasers but the rat is constantly moving so they aren't shining in Cody's eyes for an extended period of time. They also blink I believe (will check it out again)....remember, when taking a photo it makes it "still", so it appears it is shining for a long time, when it is actually not. For me it isn't about the "useful" items...it is about if I am going to blog I need to be making more money and the pet niche does NOT pay what the lifestyle niche does (contrary to what we are repeatedly told) Thanks so much!!!!

Cody isn't wearing a collar, he is wearing a bow tie (just temporarily), you will read about that tomorrow!!!!

  51. Happy 6th Blogiversary! I wouldn't mind a few life style entries, but really read for the cat content. I have a very long list of to read books, so I could do without the book reviews. Thanks for the giveaway. My 1 year old, Doc Watson would love this rat. He is fearless and loves to chase things all the time.

    1. Thanks so much!! It is looking like after I complete the books that I already committed to for 2015, that the reviews might be going by the wayside, or...they will be GREATLY reduced! I have a lot coming up to finish up the year.......then, they will either be gone or as I said, will be GREATLY reduced! Thank you!

  57. I think it should stay mainly cat focused, but with additional pages of non-cat topics, if that makes any sense. And I do love book reviews- though I prefer the adult aimed ones, rather than the children's books.

    1. thanks so much Kate! I appreciate it! I think one thing I can probably promise, is that the children's books I am obligated to review for 2015 (that I already agreed to review), will be the last.......I probably will discontinue the children's books for sure in 2016. Thank you!!!
