My first thought was, "Who is this psycho? Doesn't he know that I LOVE cats? What hole did he crawl out of?" I was sure that he had to be some sort of a raging lunatic and my initial thought was to get rid of him in short order.
I don't remember every detail of our correspondence via email, but I am fairly certain that I told him that I wasn't interested in reviewing his book, and that the title was a complete turnoff to one who loves cats.
If our email conversation had been portrayed in a cartoon, Tom would have been drawn as a cartoon man, flailing his arms saying, "Wait! It isn't what you think it is! I LOVE CATS! "
Thankfully, cartoonists have thick skins. (I know this because I am the daughter of an Editorial Cartoonist, Ray Osrin, who passed in 2001).
I agreed to take a look at his book. I'm happy that I did! Yes, Tom DOES love cats! What a great novelty gift this would be for any cat lover this holiday!
From hatecats.com:
99 Reasons to Hate Cats is a cartoon book born out of deep familiarity. It illustrates the many ways the Felis Domesticus can drive their keepers mad while still retaining their affections. Read, laugh and see if you find yourself (and your cat) in these pages.
Allow me to share a few of the 99 Reasons to Hate Cats with you:
- They only love you at dinnertime
- Smelling the litter box
- Cleaning the litter box
- Cleaning AROUND the litter box
- Waking up in the morning before YOU do
- Cat Butt in the face
- Cats are smart enough to do tricks, but they won't
- Cats are taking over the Internet
Sound familiar?
99 Reasons To Hate Cats is based on Tom and his wife's own "Cat Cast":

Aww, he does such cute drawings! And I'm sure glad it's not a mean book about cats (or I'd have to put my cat butt in his face!)
ReplyDeleteMOL! Me too!
DeleteMOL, yeah, that title would make you think twice... But that cat butt in the face... that's Star all over!
ReplyDeleteCody too!

ReplyDeleteWe're sure it's all tongue in cheek and quite fun to read. :-)
ReplyDeleteOur human says not being able to smell anymore comes in handy re: the litter box. But cleaning up AROUND the litter box can be annoying. LOL.
Happy Chanukah...well, tomorrow! LOL.
cleaning AROUND the litterbox is the WORST! Thank you for the early Chanukah greeting!

thank you so much!! I love the drawings as well. You have a great weekend too! xoxoox
DeleteSO fun!!! I love his illustration style. I really admire artists that are able to create characters with such simple lines and shapes. It's WAY harder than it looks. (as I'm sure you know!)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fabulous book!
Yep it IS fun! I love his style too! Oh yeaaaah it's way harder than it looks for sure! You know about that too!! It is quite a funny book!
DeleteI am glad you DID review it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Caren
Me too! You are welcome!
DeleteInteresting...can you imagine one about bunnies?
ReplyDeleteSpeedy, now THAT'S a thought! lol
DeleteMaybe he should write a 99 reasons to hate your spouse book next :D
ReplyDelete(and I totally love the bunny idea)
Hehehe, you're a funny lady!!! :)
DeleteThat sure does look like a cute book. And that was a great review. It gives us such a good idea about what the book is really about. Have a great day.

ReplyDeleteChag Hanuka Sameach, dear friends!
Thank you! but...how do you know MORE HEBREW than I do????? OMG I don't even know that! lol!!
DeleteLOL! I've been working for almost 10 years at the American Technion Society (which raises funds for and awareness about the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology). The Hebrew has almost been by osmosis ... between interacting with contacts, colleagues who speak it, and trips to Israel. :)
DeleteGreat review! It's not really obvious from the title that it's satire, so I wonder how many cat lovers would pass it up not knowing. Thanks for telling us about it. Sounds like a very fun book.
ReplyDeleteHi Julia and thanks! I almost passed it up because of the title for sure!
DeleteI reviewed this one also - thought it was very cute ;)
ReplyDeleteyep it is!
DeleteYou know, maybe that title will catch the attention of some people who *think* they hate cats, and they will end up with an idea of how great we are. Well, I can hope.
ReplyDeleteThe lady says that this looks like another book she'll need to add to her ever expanding list. She has a few $$ left on some Amazon gift cards...
it is super inexpensive, "the lady" should get it!
DeleteI like the book already cos this review reminded TW that she HADN'T CHEANED MY LITTER BOX ALL DAY!! She's been busy prepareing for company and has cleaned the bathroom and kitchen within a inch of its life. But she hadn't looked at the litter box.
ReplyDeleteHope TW is feeling better!
DeleteWith you around, Caren, I'm not going to have to think of ANYTHING to buy my cat-adoring friends, LOL! Sounds absolutely delightful. :)
ReplyDeleteYOU are too kind!!! It is cute for sure!
DeleteI'm glad you told me, I would have hissed at that title fur sure!
ReplyDeleteWell, okay. But the title still makes me a LITTLE suspicious. MOL.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a good choice for some cat-loving furiends of the Humans. She already buyed a couple copies of a little book called "I Could Pee on This" a book of cat poems--we might have read about it here?? Anyway, the poems are hilarious!
Happy Chanukkah (tomorrow night, right?) Remember: Cody needs presents (See, I got your back, Bro).
Thank you Caren as usual!! This book will be the perfect gift for my youngest daughter. She just rescued and adopted her second cat. Her friend found "Apollo", a 1 pound 10 ounce black kitty, trapped in a bush at the university she is attending and brought it to her. Rae immediately fell in love with the little guy. She will love this book as she is discovering that every cat seems to have a little mischievious streak hidden beneath a cuddly exterior. I am so glad I found your blog this year!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun book in spite of the title.
ReplyDeleteJust the book needed to educate people about cats by using humor!
ReplyDeleteWill have to order and have around as coffee table book!
