Ground Hog Day 2015

I have always had an issue with Ground Hog Day which is celebrated in the U.S. and Canada.  Supposedly, if the ground hog emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow, that means there will be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, then we will have an early Spring.

Why do I have an issue with Ground Hog Day?

Because Spring begins March 20th (some years it  begins on  March 21st),  if you do the math, that is SIX MORE WEEKS OF WINTER regardless (slightly more).  Then, depending on where you live, Spring NEVER starts until after April 14th, (in the Midwest we have had a number of significant snowstorms the first week of April!)...thus making Ground Hog Day and the skewed opinion of the Ground Hog useless.

  2. Cody, you make an awesome ground hog! Ok, you need to bribe the local ground hog with Num-Nums to get a good report, we'll have ours up in late morning...

  3. Yep, I was just saying I don't get the groundhog thing at all. I think it's another weird human quirk. Maybe they just want to let the weatherhumans off the hook for one day.

  11. Well, apparently Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia did see his shadow, so they must be having some sunshine this AM before the storm hits them. There's no way Wyarton Willie will see his in Ontario -- it's pretty much blizzard conditions.

BTW, I think the whole groundhog thing is only for people in more temperate climates...like the UK and in much of the Stats. LOL.

  12. Oh in our part of the country we have a good few months left until winter finally gives way! Come on groundhog, please help it come quicker!

  13. I so agree with you. We are not going to have a good Spring until April and I live somewhat in the South so that little ground hog can do what ever he wants to do. Have a Happy Monday.

  15. Here in Colorado, it seems that spring doesn't start until May! It always makes me sad because I grew up in the midwest and it was usually warm by April.

    1. Where did you used to live in the Midwest? April? Seriously? I should change the post because in Michigan and Ohio Spring never starts til the END of the first week of May! lol

  17. Cody makes a cute groundhog. Mes LOVES it!
BTW Groundhog Day is actually Imbolc (a pagan festival) and it is celebrated on Feb 2, as that is when you really notice that the days are longer (and its halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox) -- letting us know that winter will be over in the next 6 weeks.
It is snowing here today, so mes thinks that Beisiker Billy will NOT see his shadow!

  23. We totally agree! It's been snowing since last night -- another 14 inches or so on top of what was already on the ground. Talk about groundhog day! :/

Ya know, we should just set up an umbrella above the groundhog's burrow. That way when he comes out, he won't see his shadow. What do you think? :)

    1. we got almost 14 inches too and we had snow on the ground (but not as much as you did)....Love your umbrella idea! xoxo

  34. Ha-ha! You are a cute rodent, Cody...tell Mr groundhog to hide, hide, hide...we don't need winter anymore...6 weeks or not...
Spring...a figment of our imagination today, and fur many weeks to come...we had...8-1/2 inches + 3 inches + 5-1/2 inches...which adds up to 17 inches...OMC:( Way, way too much and more is falling tonight, Hey, give it a rest already!

And in May when it might just get to be nice, well then all of a sudden its midsummer and we have to stay inside to hide from the excessive heat and mugginess...sigh...

  35. Does that Ground hog stuff count in our Country too...As if...do you come to my place in your oufit, Cody :D Pawkisses for a Happy Evening :) <3
