Pet Supplies Plus Launches Kitty City, First Free-Roaming Cat Adoption Center In Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

Holiday grand opening includes 200-cat adoption event Dec. 9-11

Center aims to find homes for more homeless cats & kittens in Oakland County

From the floor-to-ceiling window, to the miniature wing-back chairs, to the cat-size perches, the new Kitty City at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills is giving homeless cats something to purr about this holiday.

Kitty City, created by Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus store owner Addy Shattuck, is a free-roaming cat habitat that gives felines a place to lounge, watch birds at an outdoor feeder and mingle with other cats while hoping that someone will spot them, fall in love and take them home.  The glass and screen enclosed open-air environment also enables humans to interact with the cats.

Kitty City will officially open with a holiday grand opening celebration, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, December 9, that includes free refreshments, cat food samples and in-store specials, along with 200 cats that will be up for adoption from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, December 9; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sat., December 10 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11.

Adopters get a free wellness exam for their cat or kitten provided by The Cat Practice of Birmingham, Michigan’s first feline-only veterinary hospital.  Adoption fee of $59 includes spay or neuter, vaccines and health check.   All cats are from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills.
“The open environment lets the cats play and do what cats do while waiting for their real home," says Shattuck.  They are so much more relaxed and content instead of being locked up.  Customers love just to come in and watch the cats."

While the Bloomfield Hills Pets Supplies Plus has been adopting out homeless cats for years, Kitty City has already made a difference.  Since opening just a few months ago, the store has already seen cat adoptions increase as shoppers are drawn to watching the antics of the felines through the window.
“Unfortunately, Oakland County has a huge overpopulation of cats” Shattuck said.  “We are hoping that Kitty City will help more people see just how wonderful cats are as pets.”

I am excited because I am going to be visiting Kitty City next week! I am not sure if I am actually going to be at the grand opening or if I will visit a day or two before the grand opening but no matter what I am going to be there!!! Will DEFINITELY take photos! I love the concept of the kitties not being in cages. It is a "homey" environment that I think has to be better for the kitties!

  2. How super! But what really catches our attention is the chair that beautiful ginger tabby is reclining in. It looks like the perfect size for kitties! We wish we had them right next to our Mum's computer chair, for optimal snoopervision.

  3. @Cat from Sydney I couldn't agree more! Look how happy those kitties look!

@Abby Normal and Stygia I know! I was thinking the same thing! The kitty is lounging as if he was at home. It is so good because potential adopters can see their personalities so much better than when they are in a cage. I wish I had a chair like that too to snoopervise my Mom! Love, Cody

  6. We love this and hope one day all facilities will be cage free. Our big local shelter finally went cage-free last year(over 600 cats!). Thanks for visiting today and yes, it's all fixed up. Plus I'm doing a giveaway.

  7. Oh, I just love this story! How wonderful to see the kitties allowed to roam free in the store. It is obviously so much less stressful for them, and makes the wait for a furever home so much more pleasant.

I hope this will become a model for all other pet stores, too.

  15. Wow, Kitty City looks fantastic (I love the name too)!!! It is great that the cats can roam around free and interact more normally with each other. I hope this encourages lots of adoptions :-)

I only know of one place in Toronto which is a free roaming shelter, its so much better than cages!

  16. @Maggie Mae thanks!

@Eric and Flynn that is what I like about it. It is more of a "homey" environment, wonderful!

    @Benny & Lily me too!

@Not Just Another Mother Blogger, YOU made MY day with your comment! Guess what? I spoke with Addy and I am going out there Wednesday afternoon BEFORE the Grand Opening! I can't wait! It is gonna be a blast! I will take pics and might try and bring my Flip too!

@Hannah and Lucy I don't think you get the chair but you could adopt the kitty! He looks like Link Bartholomew! xoxo

@Milo and Alfie I agree! I will give those kitties kisses from you when I see them next week!

@Mumsy and Furkids, I couldn't agree with you more! Kudos to Addy for thinking of it! xoxoxo

@Wendy I certainly hope so too! I spoke with Addy this morning and there are only 20 kitties that are allowed to live in Kitty City, they don't want it to be too crowded.

@Layla WOW 600 cats roaming free? That is amazing! That must be a HUGE facility! Thanks for the heads up! I actually ordered TWO calendars from you HOURS ago but you left this comment before I saw it...thanks for stopping by to tell me in the event I didn't know :)

@Max you are welcome! Thanks for caring!

@Old Kitty I am certain that I will love it! I will be there next Wednesday afternoon. I will be in kitty heaven!

  17. Aw.....what a great place! If a kitty has to be homeless, at least here they can have a semi normal life while waiting for their forever home.

  20. Can't wait to read more about it! I love the whole concept of these type of shelters. Cats just don't act the same in cages as they do in a home, so it will be interesting to see what a difference it makes.
